Czech term

vodní válec

Czech to English Science Construction / Civil Engineering
hard to even classify the specific field, it's not hydro engineering, but the phenomenon thereby created...did my research, read a lot about it, plenty of stuff out there...unless I am just tired, nothing explained this term in two or one word outside of the apt and gruesome nickname "drowning machine"...thanks in advance and if you react quickly, you should be in bed :)

Discussion

Scott Evan Andrews (asker) Nov 22, 2012:
if I may I said at the start this was hard to categorize, but it should generally fall under physics, not engineering, because the weir was constructed indeed causing the "thing", but this "thing" is a physical phenomenon
Petr Kedzior Nov 22, 2012:

Maria Such as je predsa napriklad, to neznamena, ze ta prekazka MUSI byt balvan, moze to byt prave hradza nizkej priehrady.

souse hole

Based on comparison of Czech and English meaning of the phrase, I consider this term the most appropriate. See also images bellow:

Peer comment(s):

agree Petr Kedzior : To bude ono!

Six months later, on April 12, 1996, a
recreational canoeist paddled over the dam crest and was drowned in the recirculation flow of
the reverse roller, while attempting to rescue his comrade, who had capsized.

S valcovanim to nema nic spolocne.

hydraulic reversal

or perhaps simply "back current" if you refer to this phenomenon:

From the article: The dam simulator can demonstrate a variety of natural river features and is most
importantly used to demonstrate the dangers of dams:
Hydraulic reversal that occurs at the downstream face of a low head dam; because the
sides of the dam are clear, even the water bubbles that form are visible as they
recirculate towards the face of the dam (Photo

Strange as it may sound as a noun, it can be just "hydraulic"...

neutral Vladimír Hoffman : Maybe a little too technical, rather description than term. My two cents.

water turbulence

since it's in category " Science-construction/C.E. " you should not have (any) problem with "vodni valec", and also with "drowning machine", plenty on internet

"souse hole, pillows ... " = whiteriver, white river (slalom ) v č.j. = vodni valec, are not synonyms but tzv. = so-called

vodni valec (cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vodni_valec) - je turbulentni proudeni ktere vznika u prekazky ve vodnim toku. Velmi nebezpecny muze byt valec po JEZEM.
Please click on JEZ > English and also click on word "vývařiště" and click > English = plunge pool

Scott, why not a/the sentence in original language instead of "thing".
Thanks and Haaaaaappy Thanksgiving. M.

2 hrs
