Russian term

академик-секретарь

Russian to English Science Science (general)
Is there an English (hopefully, American) equivalent of this title? I see it in biographic sketches of members of the USSR Academy of Sciences in отделений истории, философии, экономики, физики-матемтических наук, общей физики и астрономии,...

"academic secretary" is certainly wrong, but is there a term more concise than something like "Academician and Secretary (of) ..."?

Secretary of the ... section

Or, if warranted by the context, "member and Secretary of ..."

In principle, spelling it with the capital S will already distinguish this position from a secretary as a clerk.
Note from asker:
"In principle, spelling it with the capital S will already distinguish this position from a secretary as a clerk" Yes, that's obligatory when I encounter секретарь секретаря ЦК КПСС :-)

Academician-Secretary

Though generally preferring to avoid such Russicisms in translation, this is one case where I've always thought that the super-literal version worked better than alternatives. At least some published sources agree, and not only old Progress Press or Novosti Press books, but also some Springer editions and others.

Academic secreatry

I don't understand why "academic secretary" is a wrong title.

May be this is the matter of preference or style - I prefer this term to others.

Though the job of the 'academic secretary" according to the provided links is mostly related to learning institutions - universities, colleges, not to the institutions like USSR Academy of Sciences.

Anyway, the translation will depend on the context.

It is also used in English/American settings. Pls. see the links below:

Peer comment(s):

neutral Anton Konashenok : It's wrong precisely because it is used in English, and denotes a totally different function.
