German term

Motivanordnung

German to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting museum website
This is from a museum's website, in a section explaining the themes by which they've grouped their works.

"Das Thema Bild & Ornament spannt einen zeitlichen Bogen vom Kubismus und der frühen Abstraktion bis in die 1980er Jahre hinein. Entweder durch einen hohen Abstraktionsgrad, durch einen flächigen Farbauftrag, durch wenig bis fehlende Bildtiefe oder durch die rhythmische **Motivanordnung** besitzt jedes Werk etwas Ornamentales."

The rhythmical arrangement of motifs?

Rachel

(rhythmic /-al) composition

- taking it more vaguely than, say, Michael's precise transl. Could be looser still - 'repetition and rhythm in the composition', etc. For inspiration, also cf. (short URL: ) http://mcaf.ee/uci8g

agree philgoddard : Yes, "composition" means "arrangement of motifs" and is two words shorter.

pattern

Peer comment(s):

agree Stephen Reader : '... an element of pattern' (leaves open whether it's within a representational 'subject' or a repetition of it)

rhythmic arrangement of motifs

or rhythmic arrangement of compositional themes/schemes
Peer comment(s):

agree Stephen Reader : maybe sing. 'of motif' to leave 'motif' open as either 'repetition of a depicted motif' or the treatment within one such.
