German term

sinngebend

German to English Social Sciences Philosophy
Die Kirche als *sinngebende* Institution.

Diplomarbeit
English-speakers

Wechselwirkungen zwischen allen Kulturbegriffen, die wir schon aus dem Lateinischen abgeleitet haben, werden umfasst. Hierbei werden sinngebende Instanzen (Kirche), als kulturschaffend, die natürliche Umwelt betreffende (Agrikultur) als geschlossen bezeichnet und der soziale Kulturbegriff wird „offen“ genannt.

Discussion

Ramey Rieger (X) Feb 25, 2012:
Perhaps defining culture? The context we have is vacuous in itself, it's just not enough to go on.
thefastshow Feb 25, 2012:
@ Camille indeed a tricky one ... http://www.roshan-institute.org/474552 not sure either how the author interpretes kulturschaffend here. Question is can one "create" culture or is one shaping culture or building a culture; maybe one is just culturally active or contributing to a culture http://37signals.com/svn/posts/1022-you-dont-create-a-cultur... ...hard cookie in the context given.
Petra Höntzsch Feb 25, 2012:
"kulturschaffend" for me is "creating culture". Something that creates culture.
casper (X) Feb 25, 2012:
@ Chris Weimar (M.A.) How do you propose to translate kulturschaffend ?
Bernhard Sulzer Feb 24, 2012:
@Chris I have a feeling this is here not so much meant as "sinnschaffend" (creating/providing "ultimate" meaning) but rather as "sinngebend" (giving/"bestowing" "certain" meaning(s) to/on something - ideas, customs, traditions etc.) because the second definition in your text is "kulturschaffend". However, another possibility is "purpose-giving/-imparting" - as Cilian suggests. To be sure, additional context is needed (IMO). Bernhard
Carmen Lawrence Feb 24, 2012:
meaningful? Could one not possibly use 'meaningful'? Assuming that if it has meaning, it can impart meaning?
Petra Höntzsch Feb 24, 2012:
sinngebend means something like "giving sense to live". I don't know the English expression
Jonathan MacKerron Feb 24, 2012:
@Chris Is this a stand-alone section title?

agree Helen Shiner : Yes, gives life meaning / purpose or gives us a sense of purpose / direction. Not far from wegweisend.

institutions providing a sense of purpose,
