Does this just mean 'letter' or am I missing something here?

letter (of the alphabet)
I would presumt that each line of the order corresponds to a code, part of which is comprised of a letter of the alphabet, presumably with the letter standing for the component or subgroup.

: It could be more than one letter.

alphabetic superscript
The word esponente is often used in Italian not just for the mathematical exponent (to the power ...) but to any superscript (small character to the right and above another). It could be one or more letters. Obviously you really need to see the code.
Obviously the numerical type is more common.

Note from asker:
Thanks Jim. I did wonder whether it meant superscript or if if was just a typically roundabout way of saying 'letter'. I will try to confirm with the client. |
