It is considered that the port will experience serious operating difficulties when about 1 million m3 have accumulated in the port. The sand accumulates first around the breakwater head allowing wave refraction instead of wave diffraction to take place,
thereby increasing significantly wave height is the port area, difficulting loading/unloading operations at the berths. These wave heights in combination with tidal currents generate serious movement of the ships alongside the berth requiring a large number of mooring lines (up to 17 have been counted in the past) to avoid breakage. In addition, sand will settle along the inside of the breakwater reaching the first jetty and reducing the available depth.

Therefore the port will have to be dredged at least once a year by a trailing suction hopper dredger, of not less than some 6000m3 hopper capacity in order to clear the backlog in about 4-6 weeks so that disruption of normal port operations and ship access to the port is maintained a low level.

Since no dredgers of this size are available in Peru, by necessity international dredging contractors will have to be engaged. Two options can be identified, dredged material to be deposited off-shore at some 5 Km North of the port in water deeper than MLWS-8m, and sand to be ***rain bowed*** to the shore area at some 5Km North of the port.
