Spanish term

El alma es el conjunto de las pasiones

Spanish to English Marketing Poetry & Literature marketing of delicatessen
This is a quote from Stendahl and is to be used on business cards, website, etc. for a Spanish company marketing spanish delicacies made by artisans in the most traditional way. I am looking for a nice translation. My first try is:

The soul is the sum of our passions

I like your version! It is short enough to be used as a slogan, and the alliteration rolls off the tongue nicely!
Pablo Julián Davis Sep 21, 2011:
Conjunto... Hadn't thought of it before, but it just struck me that 'conjunto' in the quasi-original Spanish, obviously can also mean musical combo... Just a pleasant thought, a propos of symphonies, concerts, ensembles and the like.
ClaraVal Sep 21, 2011:
I like your version too I think it sounds good! :-)
Simon Bruni Sep 21, 2011:
sum of our passions seems perfect to me.

Thank you Eski :) I love the quote :)
neutral jack_speak : Your example uses "our" soul, which works in that case,, otherwise "the" soul works. But just plain "Soul" as the starting point of the sentence seems like youn are referring to soul music.

The soul is the concert of our passions

Since the source text is rather poetic, or lyrical, I thought the translation could be, too. (Interestingly, our source text here is not an original, but itself a translation from the French.)
I thought of 'assembly', 'gathering', 'gathering-place', or 'ensemble'.

Finally went with 'concert' in the sense of harmony, collaboration, gathering, unity. It also has the musical connotation, of course. And it just seemed a lovely word in a way that 'sum' isn't, quite. Though I like Eileen's translation!
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : I think this deserves an "agree". And since Stendhal's word is "ensemble", you could argue that "concert" is suitable!

Gracias tocayo... Yeah, me and Stendhal, that's how we roll... saludos! Pablo Julián
neutral jack_speak : Pablo, I like the idea of a take-off from the musicality/enemble aspect of the meaning, though I'd use "symphony" instead of "concert."

Thanks, Jack, nice idea! - Pablo Julián
agree Aisha Prigan (X) : I like the musical connotation. Symphony might provide a nice bit of alliteration.

Thanks Aisha. For me, 'concert' keeps the main meaning of sum or group, while having a musical connotation as secondary. That was my thought, anyway.

The soul is a manifestation of all of our passions

I believe this is the idea behind the words.
Good luck!

The soul is where passions blend

I like your own version and some suggestions, just got carried away....
Peer comment(s):

neutral jack_speak : I like your approach - with the soul as being sort of a confluence of all our passions.

The soul is our cluster of passion

Since it is a marketing slogan, it should be quick and catchy, maybe even make the reader pause and reflect.

Also:
The soul is the set of all passions.
Our passions are our soul. (if the client will let you switch it up).

I also like the ideas about symphony and confluence I suggested to others above, since those words conjure up sophistication, in my mind, anyway.

Best of luck!

"What we call life, therefore, is this constant interaction of mind (conceptive power, memory, imagination) and soul (the mass of our desires and passions).
