: I believe your first answer is much closer to be correct than the words after / mark. However c. albicans are fungi of broader medical term, so assupmtion that 舌白苔 equals the fungi is a doubtful academic interpretation.

In general, 舌苔 is translated into tongue coating. If you are dealing with Traditional Chinese Medicine text, tongue coating is almost an official term. In TCM, white tongue caoting is regarded as a sign of internal dampness. In Western medicine, tongue coating does not have a specific meaning per se.
Please note white tongue coating is one of the signs of oral candidiasis. So 舌白苔 should not translated into Candida albicans, which is a name of an organism.

: Like Joe mentions above he finds 舌白苔 to be a fungus.In this case, it is the candida albicans fungus. Fungi are, by nature, organisms.You can't say that because it’s an organism, it isn't a fungus and, therefore, cannot be translated as candida albicans.

Thanks Joyce. I said 舌白苔 is a sign (or a symptom) and Candida albicans is an organism. Candida is one of the numerous causes of 舌白苔. Oral thrush does not exactly mean 舌白苔.
