French term

code UN

French to English Bus/Financial Transport / Transportation / Shipping logistics
In a logistical services agreement:

la vérification de l'existence des données physiques et réglementaires des articles (dimensions, poids, code UN, certificats qualité, etc.) et la mise à jour de la base article lors de la réception

I have looked high and low...

Discussion

Silvia Brandon-Pérez (asker) Sep 12, 2010:
UN in French would be NU... So if anything it should say code NU. These are beauty products; the contract is between the company that manufactures the products and the one that will transport them, etc.

Catharine Cellier-Smart Sep 12, 2010:
Do you know what are is type of merchandise/product(s) being transported here ?
writeaway Sep 12, 2010:
context? articles- referring to what? A product? What country is this from? UN isn't UN? (since it's in caps). Have you already rejected UN code as a possibility? It's very frustrating to see context-free questions.

UN number {for transport of dangerous goods}

UN number for the transport of dangerous goods.

I'm not sure whether beauty products would be dangerous goods or not (although nail polish remover etc is highly flammable) but any dangerous goods that are transported must carry a UN number on the packaging.
(I used to work in logistics and once went on a training course about transporting dangerous goods).

although in French technically it should be 'NU' code, in my experience there's a tendency in the world of logistics in this context to talk about "code UN"

perfume is subject to UN numbers during transport because of its alcohol content.
Note from asker:
Ah... I understand now. I don't think they would have a UN code, but it's probably in the contract just in case. They don't make anything flammable or otherwise dangerous. They make things that make people look younger... (I could use some, actually :( )

agree writeaway : ah, logistics is a field unto itself.... not surprised that UN is UN but interesting to learn about UN numbers.

Thank you writeaway ! I agree - my MBA dissertation covered an aspect of logistics and I only scratched the surface.
agree Tony M : Seems to make sense, in the absence of wider context.

Thank you Johannes. I know everything you've listed below, here it's simply a question of knowing whether or not the beauty products in Silvia's agreement would be concerned or not by UN numbers. Perfumery products most certainly would be.

UN numbers and hazard codes (used for MSDS)

United Nations (UN) Numbers are four-digit numbers used world-wide in international commerce and transportation to identify hazardous chemicals or classes of hazardous materials. These numbers generally range between 0000 and 3500 and are ideally preceded by the letters "UN" (for example, "UN1005") to avoid confusion with other number codes.
:
MSDS Relevance
UN numbers uniquely identify only a very small number of chemicals or families of chemicals (less than 10,000), unlike CAS Registry Numbers, which are assigned to each of the 50,000,000 unique chemical compounds that have been discovered. UN/NA numbers are very useful for shippers and emergency first-responders, but are not particularly applicable to employees occupationally exposed to the materials.
