French term

DEG (Diplôme d’Etudes Générales)

French to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Must have been answered before but I can't find it here!
If you can explain what you know about courses with this qualification i.e. how long the courses are usually for etc this would assist me in applying this to my understanding.

Discussion

NZTIS Translations (asker) Apr 19, 2010:
Hi Margaret. You raise a valid point and I do apologise to all. Unfortunately the last 2 weeks have been school holidays here and I did go away with my family shortly after this and did not return until last night - hence - 'disappear' is correct on this occasion. No-one else in the office was in a position to deal with this.

With the extra information I have I am more inclined to agree with Chris Hall. The reason being that this was obtained after 3 years not 2. I also have seen quite a few DEUG's - all after 2 years. This is DEG (no mention of DEUG) after 3 years. It is the first one I have ever seen though and judging by others it would appear it is not just me.
Next, and more importantly (after a phone call). The qualifications authorities here recognise this as equivalent to a 3 year degree programme and not a 2 year programme as per the DEUG. So whether they are right or not they do see it as different.
margaret caulfield Apr 19, 2010:
ntisnz, I simply cannot understand why someone asks for help, then "disappears" and does not even give his own opinion with regards to the suggestions offered, especially when all these people have taken their OWN time, free of charge, to try and help you. I find this a major LACK OF RESPECT. In the future, please, at least give your own input to help all those who are (in this case) wasting their time trying to help YOU. This is not an automatic translation service. PEOPLE have faces and are the ones who do the work for you!
RachidAmrani Apr 6, 2010:
Please read the whole discussion. And please bear in mind that there are different systems in different countries
Chris Hall Apr 6, 2010:
DEG / DEUG... I totally disagree with the statement made by some that the DEG and DEUG qualification are the same thing.
Hazel Le Goff Apr 6, 2010:
As I understand it, a Bac+2 is a DEUG and a Bac+3 corresponds to a Licence which, I believe, is the equivalent of a Bachelor's Degree. Maybe we need to know how many post-Bac years it took to achieve this Diplôme. The term DEG (as can be seen in Chris's reference) does exist and I don't think it is the same as the DEUG.
RachidAmrani Apr 6, 2010:
DEG or DEUG are the same thing, it is a university diploma obtained after two years, I personally have a DEG/DEUG. Morocco has the same system of education as France.
margaret caulfield Apr 6, 2010:
But the word "Universitaires" has not been mentioned yet.
RachidAmrani Apr 6, 2010:
A "Diplôme d’Etudes Générales" is obtained after two years at Univ:

En France, Le diplôme d'études universitaires générales (en abrégé :DEUG) est un diplôme national de l'enseignement supérieur. Il est actuellement délivré durant le parcours de formation menant à la licence. Avant la réforme LMD, le diplôme d'études universitaires générales sanctionnait le premier cycle des études universitaires générales, d'une durée de deux ans.

General (University) Studies Diploma

Because the systems of education vary from one country to another, we sometimes cannot find the equivalent of some degrees/certificates/diplomas, in this case I would suggest literal translation or no translation
Peer comment(s):

agree writeaway : Clearly a diploma and not any sort of degree at all. And definitely do not translate it. As my FR ref says below, it's an intermediary diploma awarded after successful completion of 2 years of study on the way to the Licence (which is the actual degree)

neutral Chris Hall : In the UK, I believe that you are unable to get a university degree from studying "General Studies". Maybe it is different in other countries.
