German term

gemeinsam

Non-PRO German to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama TV Programmes
Hi,

My problem is that I don't see how something can be gemeinsam if it only comes from one source - I'd have no problem if it said, "Türkisch für Anfänger ist eine Fernsehserie im Ersten, dem gemeinsamen Fernsehprogramm der ARD und ZDF", for example.

Context:
Dezember 2008 ausgestrahlt.

Many thanks

Simon

Discussion

Bernhard Sulzer Jan 12, 2009:
clarification Paul alerted me to a mistake.when I used the word "TV program" in my comments. What I meant is programs (plural) or programming (schedule).
Bernhard Sulzer Jan 12, 2009:
the point of "gemeinsame Fernsehprogramm der ARD" The way this is phrased (IMO) emphasizes firstly that the series is shown on "national" TV (Das Erste) - which, secondly, is the program to which all regional broadcasters contribute and which they all support, thus expressing the great support the series is getting, making the series look good and important.
Bernhard Sulzer Jan 12, 2009:
Das Erste (ARD) vs. ARD Das Erste is the TV program/channel, although some might still refer even to the program/channel as ARD. But ARD is really the joint venture/consortium or cooperative association of various independent TV stations. Thus, Das Erste is a joint program/channel, put together by contributions of several stations that make up/participate in the ARD, ergo a joint TV program/channel.
jccantrell Jan 12, 2009:
gemeinsam @Kim,
I think Simon is referring to the use of 'gemeinsam' with only ONE network mentioned (ARD). The use of 'joint' without two members is what is throwing him off.

joint

ARD is a joint organization of Germany's regional public-service broadcasters.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARD_(broadcaster)

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Erste

Das Erste = ARD

ZDF is a different organization.

Simon, you might want to leave out the word "joint" altogether.

"...im Ersten, dem gemeinsamen Fernsehprogramm der ARD."

"...broadcast by Germany's first public broadcaster, the national television network ARD."

The actual structure of that network (i.e., a number of different regional broadcasters that pool material and have a certain amount of shared programming) probably isn't very important here. The text seems to focus on the TV program, not the broadcaster.

agree writeaway : sounds like the program sheet for the ARD http://www.daserste.de/a-z/default_dyn~position,a~cm.asp

agree Sabine Akabayov, PhD : z.B. ist das Nachmittagsprogramm der ARD unterschiedlich je nach Region

Yes, it varies from region to region, but they share certain programs like "Die Tagesschau"
agree kaylex : absoluetly

agree Bernhard Sulzer : ...is a TV series on "Das Erste", the joint TV program of the "ARD" (which is the/a consortium of all regional and some other broadcasters) // thx I meant programs, programming, schedule

Thanks, Bernhard, but a "TV program" in English is a "FernsehsendUNG" -- not a "FernsehsendER" (TV broadcaster, network, channel, etc.)
agree Inge Meinzer

agree Ulrike Kraemer

agree mill2 : I would leave joint out
15 hrs

aired as part of the joint television programming

If desired, here's a more literal approach (elaborated for better comprehension):
"Türkisch für Anfänger is a television series aired by Das Erste, the joint television program of the national public broadcaster ARD and its affiliates."

What puzzles me though is that your source claims Das Erste is the "gemeinsames Fernsehprogramm der ARD und ZDF"--which isn't correct, since the ZDF is a totally seperate broadcasting corporation.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Paul Cohen : Don't be puzzled. His text doesn't say "gemeinsames Fernsehprogramm der ARD und ZDF," Lonnie. That was just an example given by Simon to illustrate why "gemeinsam" was confusing.

Thanks, Paul. No wonder I wasn't puzzled until my second rushed reading.
