Yes, you are correct. If a piece contains cracks or inclusions, there will be internal acoustic damping, and a "ding" will become a "clunk". Although not "scientific", this test was routinely made by the "wheeltappers" to see if train wheels were cracked.

Not by dropping the wheels, of course, but by tapping with a small hammer - the physics is the same.
