Japanese term

交感神経の適度な役割と調和

Japanese to English Science Medical (general) mental health
This is confusing me. Here's the whole sentence:

その結果、人間が精神的に健康な状態で生活するには、環境や社会への外部適応力、心の柔軟性、自発性、協調性などに関係する交感神経の適度な役割と調和が重要であるが、この値が非線形解析で求めた最大リアプノフ指数に関係する値であることがわかってきた

It is important that human beings are in harmony with the moderate role of the sympathetic nerves/nervous system??

Or possibly the 調和 refers to the values from pulse wave analysis, which perhaps correlate with the functioning of the sympathetic nerves?

The answer became clear after reading the rest of the paper. Always a good idea!

Appropriate and harmonious functioning

It seems to me that if you take an alternative gloss for 適度 and translate it as 'appropriate' rather than 'moderate' you come to the idea of all of these functions - ability to interact with one's environment, adaptability, self expression - must function at appropriate levels and in harmony with each other, for a person to be in a healthy mental state. I don't think that 適度な役割と調和 are directly modifying 交感神経. It refers to all of the parts of the sympathetic nervous systems functioning that come before.
