German term

Hemmschwelle

German to English Marketing Tourism & Travel
This is about a restored restaurant in Dornbirn.

I had udnerstood this to be a psychology term. Is something else implied, I wonder?

Die Hemmschwelle des respektablen Kleinods ist abgebaut, obgleich es jetzt erst recht zu einem „Juwel“ am Marktplatz geworden ist.

Discussion

Hilary Davies Shelby Dec 7, 2007:
Fantastic - this now makes total sense - but it needs to be posted on the boot question instead ;-)
PoveyTrans (X) (asker) Dec 7, 2007:

Ignore my comment about waiters ;-)
Hilary Davies Shelby Dec 7, 2007:
Would it be possible to provide the previous sentence, please? It would help us to know what the Hemmschwelle actually is. Thanks!
Francis Lee (X) Dec 7, 2007:
Where's Dornbirn? What exactly does the "Kleinod" refer to? And I suspect the previous (and subsequent) text would be helpful ... Plus could you answer my and other colleagues' queries on your other question(s)? Ta. ;-)

inhibition

I think it's still a psychology term. I'd like to see the previous sentence, but I'd guess at something like "This respectable little gem has cast off its inhibitions to become a real jewel in the Marktplatz's crown."

agree Kim Metzger : Duden - Hemmschwelle: die sittliche Norm, die jmdn verhindert, etw. Bestimmtes zu tun: eine Hemmschwelle durchbrechen

thanks Kim! ;-)
agree Claire Cox : sounds very appealing!

thank you! ;-)
agree Paul Cohen : Nice one, Hilary. It may sound a bit odd (intriguing?) for a restaurant to have "inhibitions" - but I've heard stranger tales... ;-)

Thanks Paul! This is true - that's why I'd like to see the previous sentence - might explain what the Hemmschwelle is!
agree Kcda : They possibly mean the average Joe or respectable people can be uninhibited at that restaurant. With uninhibited behaviour I guess they mean being loud, drinking etc. in excess without being warned and so on. No taboos like in 5 star restaurants! :)
