German term

ein bisschen gegenlenken / die Lenkung ein bisschen aufmachen

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Cars
Hello!

Hopefully this will be last query. On the subject of steering, the interviewer talks about "gegenlenkt", eg.

"Und es unterstützt mich in Notfall vielleicht sogar ein bisschen als ein kleiner Rallyfahrer, in dem beim übersteuern mal ein bisschen gegenlenkt oder beim untersteuern die Lenkung einmal ein bisschen aufmacht."

Could somebody tell me how I could render "gegenlenkt" and "aufmacht" if it refers to the steering system of a car?

Thank you in advance.

German term (edited): Ein bisschen gegenlenkt-aufmacht
Selected

apply opposite lock, open steering

'gegenlenken' means 'to apply opposite lock' - so effectively correcting the slide. 'aufmachen' means that the steering is opened (less steering angle) which helps the tyres to regain grip.

agree Kcda : If in a high speed curve the car swerves in one direction, the steering wheel has to bu turned in the opposite direction to compensate (gegenlenken). Opposite lock.
