In New London, the functions of the Registrar of Vital Statistics and of the City Clerk are combined in one department.
As a hospital community, the Registrar of Vital Statistics is responsible for the initial processing and retention of thousands of primary records of births each year, as well as subsequent changes, adoptions or corrections to them. Additionally, the Registrar is required to prepare and disseminate prescribed copies of all vital records to surrounding municipalities and State agencies. As keeper of the original vital records, The Registrar must retain and service these records in perpetuity.
