agree Stephen Sadie : exactly what I'd've responded if it had arrived here quicker (despite DSL 6000)

neutral Aniello Scognamiglio (X) : reminds me of "ein böses Erwachen" which is a bit different from "Ernüchterung" ("Ernüchterung" does not happen suddenly). I am not saying "a rude awaking" is wrong but it says "im Jahresverlauf" (nothing happens suddenly).

an awakening needn't be sudden - perfectly okay to say e.g. "they're in for a r. a. over the next few years/months/days"

there was a strong feeling of disillusionment

agree Textklick : Many dicos support this. It is also suggested by Anniello's comment re 'Jahresverlauf'.

a great deal of disillusion

Leo.........
Peer comment(s):

disagree Louise Mawbey : disillusion is not a noun. Do you mean disillusionment? I stand corrected but I still think that "a great deal of disillusion" sounds wrong - maybe someone could tell us why.

disillusion > die Ernüchterung (Dicc. LEO)
disagree Textklick : Duden Oxford and LS both insist that you are short of a '-ment' here and that 'disillusion' is a verb.

it was a wake-up call

an idea, shows the idea that until then maybe they had rested on their laurels a bit.

sobering experience

...the year's results made for a sobering experience.

Perhaps a tad softer than a rude awakening, if that's any consolation
