German term

verflusen

German to English Science Science (general) instructions for washing mops
This is from some instructions on how to clean mops:

"Mikrofaserbezüge sortenrein waschen, um das Verflusen der Faser zu verhindern"

I think it might be "felting" or "clumping together" - anyone know?

Discussion

Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Sep 30, 2005:
Those are US articles on UK sites - "microfibER" and "laundry" (for "washing") are giveaways ;-)
Michele Fauble Sep 30, 2005:
Maybe 'pick up lint and fluff' would work?
Michele Fauble Sep 30, 2005:
Yes, it does seem to be the same. I have found some UK sites with 'lint'
('get linty', 'lint-free').
Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Sep 30, 2005:
Usually, yes. "Tumble-dryer fluff", "belly-button fluff" etc ;-)
Michele Fauble Sep 30, 2005:
Is 'fluff' what the British say for 'lint'? I've posted a couple of references with 'attract fluff' and 'pick-up fluff', where it seems to be used in that way.
Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Sep 30, 2005:
British English I've just been told the client wants BE. Is there a more British word for "lint"? Would "fluff" be all right? The only time I've seen lint used in UK is in medical dressings.
John Jory Sep 29, 2005:
In spite of getting carried away, Friderike is on the right track. The problem involves the micro fibers becoming clogged with lint, which can be prevented by 'sortenrein' washing (likes of a feather don't clog together in this case).
Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Sep 29, 2005:
@Friderike Sorry, I have a good friend called FriEderike, my fingers just typed it automatically ;-)
Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Sep 29, 2005:
@Friederike Fabulous!! Don't apologise, synonyms are very helpful!!!
Friderike Butler Sep 29, 2005:
(sortenrein) then no other bits and pieces of other fabric would be in the water, so your mop should come out clean - and not matted, tangled, verflust, verpilzt, verlottert - sorry got carried away...
Friderike Butler Sep 29, 2005:
I think it would look more like if you washed a tissue paper with your laundry and that dissolves and then bits and pieces get stuck on everything. The mop would be like a magnet to any bits and pieces of fabric in the wash, but if you wash it by itself
Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Sep 29, 2005:
hmmm....like ..dreadlocked??
Friderike Butler Sep 29, 2005:
I think the micro fibers are attracting other fibers, so if you wash the mop with other fabrics that cause lint, the micro fibers attract the lint and come out "verflust".
Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Sep 29, 2005:
Light dawns ahhh! So it's the fibres FALLING OFF that is meant??? I couldn't understand why having a fluffy mop (?!) would be a problem...

prevent the fibers from creating excessive lint

This site says:

The second complaint is that the towel creates excessive lint. Microfiber lint is caused by towels with a high pile or a broad weave using a fiber split that’s inappropriate. The high pile or loose weave allow the fibers to break off, creating lint.

Might be a bit wordy, but LINT is the word you want.
Peer comment(s):

agree Friderike Butler : I think it is more along the lines of attracting excessive lint... but lint is the underlying problem

Fluffing / Shedding occurs when loose fibres are released from the surface of the new carpet. This normally subsides within a short time.

linting

gets around the problem of whether it creates or attracts lint ... though I think the material itself would create lint/pill from being "roughed up" by other materials
