French term

obnubilations

French to English Medical Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Biography of Vincent van Gogh
For somebody who never translates medical jargon, I'm having a whale of a time !!!!!

Certaines crises comportent des sentiments d'étrangeté, des automatismes confusionnels et des hallucinations. D'autres crises sont de brèves obnubilations avec des cauchemars atroces.

I can't find the word obnubilation anywhere.

TIA

agree Nick Lingris : "attacks of brief clouding of consciousness" The term "clouding of consciousness" is also used in the Britannica and maintains the connection to 'nebula'.

periods of extreme confusion

Others here are on the right track, but I'd try and make sense of the whole description of the various pathological symptoms:

"Some [of these] acute episodes were characterised by strong feelings of alienation, uncontrolled movements and hallucinations. Others were brief periods of extreme mental confusion accompanied by terrible nightmares."

Something like that.
