Source text - English Domenico Gnoli: Trouser’s pocket, 1969
Gnoli used to say that he was predestinated to become an artist by his own family background. His father was an art historian and his mother was a painter, ceramist. He has worked in many fields: painting, stage-design and costume design, illustrating books and he even made illustrations for famous international magazines such as Harper' s Bazaar or Vogue. His innovative graphics in the advertising indusrty and his hyper-realist style brought him international recogntion in the 1950’s. From 1955 he dedicated himself only to painting and participated in many European and US museum exhibitions. Gnoli is considered to be one of the forerunner’s of the Pop Art of the 60’s due to his hyper-realist paintings depicting every day objects, mainly fashion cloth.
His works belong to the new realism. This movement, just as Dadaism and Surrealism, chose for it’s starting point the elements of every day life. The goal of this movement was to restore the relation between art and real world, society, which was interrupted by the hegemony of abstract and informel art. Daniel Spoerri’s table-cloth, which was hardened and turned into a piece of art or Jean Tinguely’s meta-machines, built from the wast spare parts of industrial and household items, Arman’s piling of objects – all starve to reveal the after-war-reality, expressing their concern about the rapid political and economic changes and the emergence of mass production.
It is very typical for Gnoli to depict women’s and men’s cloth. His pictures from the second half of the 50’s show cloths in their close surroundings, from a close glance, in their whole appearence. Such picture is for example the Pressed Shirt from 1954, where the shirt shown on the picture lies on the table in the room. In the beginning of the 60’s we can find the same compositions, for example Homme double-face from 1964, where you can see two suit forms from collar to trousers pocket hight – one from the front and the other from the back view. On his Tie from 1967 you can see already an enlarged element of a tie. The picture ends at the meeting point of the tie and the collar and you can actually guess the human body that lies under it by a tiny pink triangular telling us this. The tie is depicted in such a hyperrealist manner and with such brilliant shadowing, that only the measure of the painting helps us recognise the tie within it.
All the elements of his late period can be found on his painting Trouser’s Pocket from 1969. The whole surface of the picture deals with an enlarged element of a grey trouser with black narrow stripes, the pocket and part of the belt. Here the artist avoids mentioning the body, it seems as if the surface is flat, with no body under it. The seam, the texture of the textile, the shadow on the outer side of the pocket – all show pocket as seen in real life. Just as Warhol, Gnoli knew very well the world of fashion- and lifestyle magazines, because he was an illustrator working for such magazines. His consumer oriented approach changes on his pictures, where his enlarged objects rather frighten away the spectator. His hyperrealist style shows us how advertisements and TV can manipulate consumer’s sense for reality. He shows his shiny objects in a perfect and desirable manner, but the truth is that these fetishistic objects are victims of fashion trends. In this sense his pictures can be observed as witnesses of „vanity”. They remind us of vanity, the fake message of narcissism and the transiency of materialistic world, which these objects belong to.
Gnolit - saját szavait idézve - családi környezet predesztinálta a művészi pályára. Édesapja művészettörténész, édesanyja festő és keramikus volt. Tevékenysége sokrétű, a festészettől a díszlet és jelmeztervektől a könyvillusztrációkig terjed, de készített rajzokat nagy nemzetközi magazinoknak is mint például a Harper' s Bazaar vagy a Vogue. Újszerű reklámgrafikái és hiperrealista ábrázolási stílusa az ötvenes években nemzetközi elismertséget hozott számára. 1955-től kizárólag a festészettel foglalkozott, sok európai és amerikai múzeum kiállításán vett részt. A hétköznapi tárgyakról, elsősorban divatos ruhadarabokat ábrázoló hiperrealista festményei kapcsán a hatvanas évek pop-művészetének egyik előfutárának tekinthető.
Munkássága az új realizmushoz köthető. Ez az irányzat, a dadaistákhoz és szürrealistákhoz hasonlóan a hétköznapi világ elemeit választotta a művészetének kiindulásaként. Céljuk az volt, hogy helyreállítsák a művészet és a társadalmi valóság kapcsolatát, mely az absztrakt és informel művészet hegemóniája során megszakadt. Daniel Spoerri műalkotássá megmerevedett asztal-terítékei, Jean Tinguely ipari és háztartási eszközök hulladék-alkatrészeiből épített meta-gépei, Arman tárgyhalmozása mind a háború utáni világ feltárására törekedetek, szembenézve a felgyorsult politikai és gazdasági változásokkal, a tömegfogyasztás kialakulásával.
Gnoli festészeti munkásságát férfi és női ruhadarabok ábrázolása jellemzi. Az ötvenes évek második felében készült képein a ruhákat szűkebb környezetükben, egész alakjukban mutatja be, Lenyomott ing (Pressed Shirt) című 1954-es festményén az ing egy szobában lévő asztalon hever. A hatvanas évek első felében készült képein is találunk hasonló kompozíciót, 1964-es Kétarcú férfi (Homme double-face) című képén egymás mellett látható egy férfi öltönye elöl- és hátulnézetben, úgy hogy a testből csak a gallér és a nadrágzseb közötti részt ábrázolta. Nyakkendő (1967) című művén azonban a képtérben már egy óriásira nagyított nyakkendő részletét látjuk. A kép teteje ismét elvágva a gallér és a nyakkendő találkozásánál, az emberi test létezését egy pici testszínű háromszög. A nyakkendő hiperrealista bravúrral festett képe, az árnyékolás-technika tökéletes illúziót kelt, kizárólag a méret segíti a tájékozódásban a nézőt.
Ennek a késői korszakának minden jellegzetes vonását magán hordja Nadrágzseb (1969) című festménye is. A kép teljes felületén felnagyítva egy szürke alapon fekete hajszálcsíkos nadrág, illetve annak zsebe és az övrész egy részlete látható. Itt a testre vonatkozó minden utalást került a művész, a hatalmasra nagyított részlet síknak tűnik, mintha nem viselné senki. A varrás, az anyag textúrája, a zseb külső részének vetett árnyéka ebben az esetben is valós hatást kelt. Gnoli, Andy Warholhoz hasonlóan, újság-illusztrátorként jól ismerte a divat- és életmódmagazinok világát. A reklámok fogyasztásra ösztönző kommunikációja festményein kifordul önmagából, populáris kultúra áhított termékei inkább riasztóan hatnak a nézőre. Hiperrealista ábrázolásmódja rámutat a reklámok, a televízió által közvetített képek a fogyasztók valóságérzékelést formáló manipulatív mechanizmusára. Csillogó tárgyait tökéletesnek, kívánatosnak mutatja be, ezek a fétisek azonban kiszolgáltatott a múlékony divat változásainak. Ebben az olvasatban felfoghatók festményei vanitas-ábrázolásoknak is, emlékeztetve nézőjüket a hiúság és narcizmus öncsaló dicsőségére, e tárgyak képviselte materiális világ múlékonyságára.

I am a bilingual person with Hungarian and Bulgarian languages. Nevertheless I speak Russian and English and understand Spanish a bit. I love Arts. I have lots of experience in translating and interpreting, but prefer and love to translate.
