The Pearl
Imperial Suites’ first American hotel revels in sheer, unabashed luxury. Acquired by the Hong Kong-based hotel company in 1988, the Beaux Arts-style former Grosvenor Hotel now offers Asia’s utmost standard of service in Midtown Manhattan. The tradition that began in 1928 with the original Pearl Hotel in Hong Kong now extends to a host of other fine hostelries around the world.
Once past the five-bayed Fifth Avenue facade of hand-carved limestone, guests of The Pearl check in at a small, discreet front desk. From the reception area to the restaurants, all public spaces surround visitors with the swirling romance of Art Nouveau styling, a mode that reached its first height of glory in late nineteenth century Paris. Works of art by such French masters as Majorelle, Gallé, Mercier, and Gaillard set off handmade European carpets, marble floors and staircases, mahogany and burl wood wall panelling and glittering chandeliers.
The opulence of Paris in an earlier age infuses the private quarters as well. Among 250 rooms and suites, the largest measures over 2,500 square feet. All are spacious and filled with custom-designed furnishings-such as Art Nouveau cabinets to hide remote-control TV’s, king-sized hardwood head-boards with curvaceous Belle Epoque designs, billowing balloon shades covering the windows, and cherubs and flowers garlanding the lamps.
Marble baths soothe travellers with spacious showers, six-foot tubs, bidets, robes, slippers, and Lanvin toiletries displayed on white china trays. Messages arrive at a guest’s front door on a silver platter carried by a page in white gloves and pillbox hat. Such extraordinary service echoes the Imperial Suites standard in everything they do from same day laundry and dry cleaning to daily newspaper delivery, citywide beepers, valet parking, and room service around the clock.

Setting up a host computer
1. Install your printer driver (See “Macintosh” on
page 30).
2. Open the Applications folder > System Prefer-
ences and click Print & Fax.
3. Select the printer to share in the Printers list.
4. Select Share this printer.
Setting up a client computer
1. Install your printer driver (See ”Macintosh” on
page 30).
2. Open the Applications folder > System Prefer-
ences and click Print & Fax.
3. Click the “ ” icon.
A display window showing the name of your shared
printer appears.
4. Select your machine and click Add.
Linux
Install Linux Driver
1. Make sure that the machine is connected to your
network and powered on. Also, your machines IP
address should have been set.
2. From the Samsung website, download the Uni-
fied Linux Driver package to your computer.
3. Right click the Unified Linux Driver package
and extract the package. 4. Double click cdroot >
autorun.
5. The Samsung Installer window opens. Click
Continue.
6. The Add printer wizard window opens. Click
Next.
7. Select Network printer and click Search button.
8. The Printers IP address and model name ap-
pears on list field.
9. Select your machine and click Next.
10. Input the printer description and Next.
11. When the add printer is done, click Finish.
12. When the install is done, click Finish.
Wireless network name and Network Key
Wireless networks require higher security, so when
an Access Point is first set up, a network name
(SSID), the type of security used, and a Network
Key are created for the network.
Locate this information before proceeding with the
machine installation.
Infrastructure mode wireless networks
The most common network configurations include
the use of a network hub, router, or wireless Access
Point as shown. You may connect directly to one
of these devices using a standard network cable or
wirelessly to the Access Point.
Most Infrastructure mode networks use a Dynamic
Host Configuration Protocol Server (DHCP) to au-
tomatically assign an IP address and set other net-
work parameters. In home wireless networks, the
Access Point performs this function. Ad-Hoc mode
wireless networks
Alternately, if you do not have a standard network
as above you can still use the machine wirelessly
from a computer with wireless capabilities by set-
ting up a simple Ad-Hoc, of peer-to-peer, network
as shown here.

In my home you’ll find a lot of lamps. Den-
mark can be a gloomy place and that makes light
really important. I love chandeliers! Their extra
sparkle brings a little magic to my home. For the
same reason I have mirrors everywhere, in all sorts
of styles, even the door panels of wardrobes. I use
them to create an open, airy feeling. I like tex-
tiles with striking patterns but a lot of colour can
become disturbing. Having a white scheme overall
and keeping windowsills free of ornaments gives the
textiles space to breathe.
I sew some of my dresses at home and an un-
cluttered home office gives me an uncluttered mind.
I have the table by the window for maximum light
and loads of discreet storage along the wall in pull-
out compartments as well as an open storage box
for threads and pins. My little secret is that I keep
the sewing machine in the utility room with the
rest of the clutter cheating a bit, I know!
We have a walk-through dining room connect-
ing the bedrooms with the rest of our home, which
means it cannot be a static space. Wheeled chairs
and two circular tables work far more effectively
than one big, dining table. It means we can draw
them together to seat as many as 10 for dinner,
then draw them apart again to allow a flowing pas-
sage through the room vital when Frederik is rac-
ing about with friends!
Our bedroom doubles as a corridor through
to Frederik’s room, so we have to keep it tidy. We
have no clothes in here, they are all stored in the
utility room. It’s not ideal, it’s a room that doesn’t
even have any surfaces, we just throw things in
there. I know I have to find a better solution! We
use floor lamps as reading lights, freeing up space
on my bedside table for books and flowers. The
simple furnishings help me sleep easily, and if I
can’t, I run. Exercise and reading are my reme-
dies for sleep.

ricevere la massima luminosità e lungo il muro ha
dei cassetti che possono contenere un po’ di cose
e una scatola aperta per ago e filo. Il mio piccolo
segreto tenere la macchina da cucire nel ripostiglio
insieme alle altre cianfrusaglie lo so, è un po’ come
barare!
Abbiamo una sala da pranzo a cui si accede
da due entrate che unisce le camere da letto con il
resto della casa, cosa che implica che non si tratti di
uno spazio statico. Sedie con le ruote e due tavoli
da lavoro circolari sono pi utili di un unico grande
tavolo da pranzo. Ciò significa che possiamo unirli
per avere 10 posti a sedere per cena e poi separarli
per garantire il passaggio lungo la stanza vitale,
quando Frank gareggia con i suoi amici!
La nostra camera da letto fa da corridoio fino
alla camera di Frederik, perciò deve essere tenuta
pulita. Non ci sono abiti in quella stanza perché
li teniamo nel ripostiglio. Non è l’ideale, è una
stanza che non ha ripiani in cui noi buttiamo sem-
plicemente le cose. Lo so che devo trovare una
soluzione migliore! Usiamo le lampade a piantana
come lampade da lettura, in modo da lasciare il mio
comodino libero per libri e fiori. I mobili semplici
mi aiutano ad addormentarmi facilmente e se non
ci riesco corro. L’esercizio e la lettura sono i miei
rimedi per il sonno.
