Source text - Swedish TJÄNSTEANDEN Krus Erik Ersson, sockenskomakarn, och hans lärling, Konstantin Karlsson, hade suttit hela veckan och gjort skor i prästgården, och nu vid niotiden på lördagskvällen var de på väg till sina hem långt borta vid sockengränsen. Det var höst, och solen var nergången för längesedan, men vandringen gick inte fördenskull fram i mörker, utan genom klar luft och mån- sken. Det var så vackert, som det kunde vara. Sjön nedanför prästgården låg spegelblank, med en väg av silver mitt över, och utåt åkrarna sågs på vartenda strå daggdroppar, som blev till vita pärlor i månskenet. Det var bara, när de hade att gå genom en eller annan träddunge, som det blev mörkt omkring dem. Det var inte särdeles långt lidet på hösten, utan löven satt ännu kvar, och trädkronorna bredde ut sig över deras huvuden som djupsvarta valv. Det var litet ovant att gå efter att i sex dagar ha suttit lutade över skomakarbänken. De pustade under tyngden av ränslarna, och ingen av dem sade något. Men vägen från prästbostället ledde förbi begravningsplatsen, och när Krus Erik Ersson över kyrkogårdsmuren såg en skymt av de gammal- modiga gravkorsen, kom tankarna i fart på honom. »Ja, du Konstantin,» sa han, och stämman blev med detsamma både ängslig och längtans- full, som då man en natt går förbi en främmande fruktträdgård och talar om hur gott det skulle vara, om man kunde få något med av äpplena. »Det skulle vara bra präktigt, om en kunde få lite gravmull.» »Gravmull!» sa lärlingen och blev så häpen, att han stannade. »Det kan ni väl få, så mycke ni vill. Men vad skulle ni med den?» Krus Erik stannade också, och nu var han så gripen av det, som de talade om, att han inte kunde få ljud i rösten, utan måste viska. »Det är på det sättet, som man får en 'spirr- tus'. Och den, som har en spirrtus, kan få allt vad han vill. Då behövde en aldrig mer göra ett par skor. En kunde bygga sig en gård lika hög som klockstapeln, och en kunde skaffa sig hästar och vagn och slippa gå ett steg.» Lärlingen var från ett hem, där mycken from- het och gudaktighet övades och all övertro var bortlagd. Han stod i slö förvåning och kunde inte fatta, att Krus Erik menade allvar. »Det är väl inte möjligt, att ni tror på så’nt, mäster Erik,» sa han. »Visst tror jag,» sa den andre. Och där, som de stod utanför kyrkogården, började han be- rätta om både den ena och den andra, som hade skaffat sig en spirrtus och betjänat sig av den. Men det var inte möjligt för honom att få lärlingen till att tro. Han var en lång, vacker pojke på sjutton år med ett beskedligt, men också litet sömnaktigt utseende. Han frågade i all oskuld: »Om ni tror så säkert, varför skaffar ni er inte själv en så’n där hjälpare?» Krus Erik svarade dystert: »Jag kan aldrig få nå’n. Det är över min kraft.» Därmed suckade han, hissade ränseln högre upp på axlarna och återtog vandringen. Konstantin förblev stående. Det tycktes, som om ett svagt intresse för saken hade börjat vakna inom honom. Då Krus Erik hade gått ett par steg, stannade han och vände sig mot lärlingen. »Du kan väl aldrig mena, Konstantin,» och stämman darrade till bara vid tanken på något så oerhört, »du menar väl aldrig, att jag skulle gå in på kyrkogårn och ta opp mull?» »Nej,» sa lärlingen betänksamt. »När ni tror på det, förstår jag ju, att ni inte kan.» »Jag går aldrig förbi en kyrkogård om natten utan att önska mig en spirrtus,» sa Krus Erik, »men jag kan inte skaffa mig nå’n. Så att det är inte lönt, att vi står kvar här längre, Konstantin.» Han återtog vandringen, men långsamt, lik- som i hopp att bli hejdad. Lärlingen följde honom inte nu heller. Saken var ju den, att om det fanns någon i världen, som han riktigt höll av, så var det Krus Erik. Föräldrarna därhemma var så stränga, att de var- ken tålde skratt eller lek. Skomakarn däremot var full av skämt och historier och så lätt att umgås med, som om han också vore en sjutton- åring. Och nu, när Konstantin såg honom stå gammal och sliten borta på vägen, fick han lust att göra honom en glädje. Han stötte med foten till en grästorva, så att daggpärlorna stänkte upp i luften. »Ser ni, Krus Erik, jag är inte mer rädd för den ena jordtorvan än för den andra, och om ni bara vill vänta på mig en stund, så ska ni få vad ni önskar er.» Han hade krängt av sig ränseln och kastat ner den på vägen, medan han talade. Nu gjorde han ett språng över landsvägsdiket och muren och stod inne på kyrkogården, innan Krus Erik hann befalla honom att avstå från företaget. Det var också nödvändigt, att alltsammans kom som en överraskning för mästarn. Krus Erik var lika mån om sina lärlingar som om sig själv. Han skulle aldrig ha tillåtit Konstantin att nattetid gå in på en kyrkogård, om han hade blivit till- frågad. Konstantin kunde mycket väl ha samlat in litet mull från en grav, som hade legat nära kyrkogårdsmuren, men så ville han inte ha det. Det var inte ofta han var i stånd att utmärka sig på något sätt, men mod ägde han nog av, och han hade inte något emot, att Krus Erik skulle lägga märke till detta. Han stannade äntligen vid en gravkulle, som låg mitt på kyrkogården, sparkade upp en torva och grävde sedan med händerna undan det översta jordlagret. Då han tyckte, att han hade arbetat sig till räckligt djupt ner i jorden, tog han ett par nävar mull och fyllde med den sina tröjfickor. Hur mycket mull som behövdes för en duglig spirrtus, kunde han inte rätt veta, men han tänkte, att två fickor fulla skulle förslå. Hela tiden var han bara road av sitt företag och kände ingen rädsla. Hans tankar sysslade med Krus Erik. Vad skulle han ta sig till månne, sedan han hade fått en spirrtus att befalla över? Alldeles tyst och stilla var det omkring honom. Det var nästan försmädligt, att han alls inte såg eller hörde något sådant, som folk brukar se och höra på kyrkogårdar, så att han hade haft några äventyr att skryta med, då han kom till- baka till mästarn. Han skrapade ner den uppkastade mullen i hålet och lade grästorvan till rätta. Han gjorde detta långsamt, för att det skulle ta litet tid. Krus Erik skulle inte tro, att han hade gjort sig någon brådska. Mitt under arbetet höll han inne och blev alldeles stilla. Det var inte något spöke, som hade skrämt honom, bara en liten underlig tanke. Det tycktes honom med ens, att han var bra dum, som gjorde sig så mycket besvär för att skaffa en spirrtus åt Krus Erik. Varför behöll han den inte själv? Han var i lika stort behov av den som mästarn. I en glimt såg han framför sig en liten grå stuga med ett enda rum, som var hans hem, en lång, sorgsen, dödssjuk man, som var hans far, en utsliten, avmagrad kvinna, som var hans mor. Visst, visst behövde han en spirrtus bättre än någon annan. Det föll ett blad från ett träd, just som han hade detta i tankarna. Det prasslade till, då det for förbi hans huvud, och han reste sig med stor hast. Han såg sig omkring med förvildade blickar. Hade det hänt något, medan han hade stått lutad över graven? Höll de döda på att vakna? Det viskade bestämt från grav till grav. Det skymtade något vitt inne i den svarta skuggan under träden. Där stod de döda i täta klungor. De hade funnits där hela tiden. I nästa ögonblick skulle han se dem. Jaa Han var rädd ett ögonblick, men han sprang inte, utan stod stilla. Han tvingade blickarna. De fick inte irra åt alla håll för att spana efter gastar. Han ville inte skrämma upp sig. Ville inte komma andfådd och darrande tillbaka till Krus Erik. Och under den stadiga blicken försvann allt- sammans. Luften blev som rensad från spöken och otyg, och han kunde anträda återfärden med lugn. Det där att behålla gravmullen för sig tänkte han inte mer på. Vad skulle det tjäna till? Det var ju bara jord. Det var bra besynnerligt, att en så klok man som Krus Erik hade kunnat gå och längta efter sådana barnsliga ting i hela sitt liv. Det var också något att längta efter! Kon- stantin stack händerna i sina välfyllda fickor. Bara litet mull. Men i detsamma gav Konstantin till ett gällt, rungande skrik, likaså vilt och ångestfullt, som om en gast hade visat sig för honom. När hans händer hade grävt sig ner i fickorna, hade han känt, att det inte var mull, som fyllde dem, utan döda människors kvarlevor. Det var fingrar, tår, glatta ögonklot, skrumpnat skinn, tilltrasslat hår, kött, benskärvor, senor. Och allt detta var klibbigt, kallt, mjukt, statt i upplösning. Han ryckte upp händerna och satte av i vildaste flykt mot muren och vägen, allt- medan han försökte vända ut och in på fickorna för att bli fri från den förfärliga massan. Hela tiden skrek han, mindre av skräck än av vämjelse. Då han åter stod på vägen och såg sig om efter Krus Erik, märkte han denne på språng långt bortom kyrkan. Konstantin fick i en hast fatt i ränseln och slängde den på sig. Helst hade han nu velat springa så fort, som benen förmådde, men han ville inte göra sig löjlig. Han bet samman tän- derna och höll den vanliga lunken, ända tills han hann upp mästarn, som stod och väntade på honom borta vid sockenstughörnet. »Hur är det med dig?» frågade Krus Erik, och då Konstantin svarade, att han hade det bra, gjorde han inga fler frågor. Se, Krus Erik visste ju, att då man misstänker, att en människa har sett något underligt, är det inte bra att tala om detta förrän någon tid efteråt. Hur det hade gått med att samla in gravmullen, det såg han på Konstantins ut- och invända tröj- fickor. Under sommarn och så långt in på hösten som möjligt sov Konstantin på vinden, där han med några bräder hade stängt av åt sig en vrå, som han kallade för sin kammare. Den var inte stor, ett litet, smalt sängställ upptog nästan hela utrymmet, men det var det behaget med den, att han kunde få sova ut där om söndagsmornarna. Hade han legat nere i stugan hos föräldrarna, hade han varit tvungen att stiga upp i så god tid, att modern hann att bädda upp sängen, innan hon gick till kyrkan. Sedan han hade börjat arbeta hos Krus Erik, var det ingenting ovanligt, att han om sön- dagarna sov, ända tills väggklockan nere i stugan slog tolv, men något sådant hände honom inte dagen efter äventyret på kyrkogården, utan han vaknade redan före tio. Han kom genast ihåg alltsammans. Det satt ännu kvar en smula väm- jelse i fingrarna. Det kröp i dem, bara han tänkte på det där, som de hade kommit ner i. Det hade varit inbillning alltihop förstås, bara rädsla. Han visste ju, att det inte var annat än mull, som han hade stoppat i fickorna. Men Krus Erik hade haft rätt, han. Det var inte någon lätt sak att gå in på kyrkogården om natten och hämta gravmull. Med ens for han upp ur sängen. Tänk, om mor och Krus Erik skulle råkas på kyrkvägen, och tänk, om mästarn skulle tala om, att Konstantin i går kväll var inne på kyrkogården för att skaffa en spirrtus! Han fick lov att tala med skomakarn genast och be honom tiga. Mor skulle bli alldeles ifrån sig. Så brått han hade, kunde han inte förmå sig att sätta på sig skorna, så dammiga och smutsiga som de var. Han tog fram blanksmörja och borste ur ränseln och trädde skon på handen. I detsamma kom en hel massa jord farande ut ur den. Konstantin drog häftigt in andedräkten och blåste ut den igen med ett visslande. Han förstod hur det kom sig, att han hade mull i skorna. Den hade troligtvis ramlat ner i dem, då han tömde fickorna på kyrkogården. Skorna var ju så vida upptill. Det kunde inte ha gått till på annat sätt. Han tittade på mullkornen. De var som annan jord. Ja, det andra hade ju bara varit inbillning. Han tömde båda skorna och förde samman jorden med foten. Inte var det mycket, men . . . Kanske det ändå kunde räcka till en spirrtus? Återigen öppnade han ränseln, tog fram en liten bleckdosa, där han brukade förvara nubb och pligg, tömde den och sopade gravmullen ner i den. Krus Erik skulle få sin spirrtus. Han skulle få se, att Konstantin hade varit karl till att föra hem den. – – – – – – – – – – – Fastän Konstantin knappt hade gett sig tid att smaka på mjölken och brödet, som mor hade ställt fram åt honom, kom han inte fram till Krus Eriks stuga i tid, utan mästarn hade redan gett sig av till kyrkan. Konstantin skyndade efter för att söka hinna upp honom på vägen, och det hade han väl också gjort, om det inte hade varit för skorna. Han visste inte vad som hade tagit åt dem. De glappade för varje steg, såsom de aldrig förr hade gjort, och skavde på foten. Det började svida i skinnet, så att han måste stanna. Han tog av sig skorna och satte sig vid väg- kanten. Barfota kunde han inte förmå sig att gå, och med skorna på kom han inte ur fläcken. Han hade redan skavsår på båda fötterna. Medan han satt rådlös på marken, kom en kärra körande, och i den satt Öst Samuel Andersson och en främmande, som såg ut som en herrekarl. De åkte helt långsamt, vilket föreföll underligt, för Öst Samuel var hästhandlare och brukade alltid köra så, att hästen låg som utsträckt efter vägen. Öst Samuel var annars en gammal god vän till Konstantins föräldrar. Deras stuga låg på en utmark under Östgården, och han hade mången gång stått dem bi med råd och dåd, framför allt sedan far hade fått den här svåra sjukdomen, som nästan alltid höll honom vid sängen. Då Öst Samuel kom mitt för Konstantin, drog han in tömmarna och frågade honom vart han ämnade sig. Jo, han skulle till kyrkan, men han hade fått skavsår, så att han var visst tvungen att vända om hem. Öst Samuel erbjöd honom då att åka bakpå kärran. Han skulle inte till kyrkan, utan till kyrkvärden i Aspnäs, men Konstantin fick åtmins- tone hjälp med halva vägen. Konstantin kröp upp bakpå kärran. Detta var ju ändå en liten början till tur. Därframme i kärran talade de om Konstantin. Den främmande sade först något, men med så låg röst, att han inte kunde höra det. Öst Samuel däremot hade en mer bullersam stämma, och han förstod inte att dämpa den. Konstantin hörde, att han medgav, att pojken såg bra ut och var beskedlig, men det var inga tag i honom, såsom det väl hade behövts. Fadern låg jämt sjuk, modern höll på att arbeta ihjäl sig, men gossen gick helst och slog dank. Nu hade de satt honom i skomakarlära, och mästarn tyckte, att han var snäll och villig, men inte trodde han, att det kunde bli någon riktig skomakare av honom. Han hade dåligt handlag och var långsam. Den främmande sade åter något med sin låga röst. Han måtte ha påmint om att Konstantin kanske hörde vad de sade. Öst Samuel svarade bekymmerslöst, att den där pojken ingenting hörde. Han gick alltid omkring, som om han sov. Vad det nu berodde på, men Konstantin sov inte den dagen. Han hörde både detta och allt annat, som de bägge resande talade om. Öst Samuel höll in hästen vid avvägen, som ledde upp till Aspnäs. Konstantin fick stiga av, och de andra körde upp till gården. »Du får allt skynda dig nu, om du vill komma fram till kyrkan, innan prästen har stigit ner från predikstolen,» ropade Öst Samuel efter honom. Men sannerligen det var lätt för Konstantin att skynda sig. Skoskavet plågade honom vid varje steg. Han kom inte fortare framåt än en snigel. Kanske spirrtus inte ville, att han skulle lämna den ifrån sig? Det gick inte bättre, än att gudstjänsten tog slut och kyrkfolket begav sig på hemväg, innan Konstantin hade kommit så långt som till kyrkbyn. En av de första, som han mötte, var kyrk- värden från Aspnäs, som kom vandrande mitt på vägen, så bred och stor, som om han ville behålla den för sig ensam. Skomakarlärlingen, som hade arbetat i var- enda gård i socknen, kände genast igen kyrk- värden. Han ställde sig mitt för honom, sträckte ut handen och sade goddag. Kyrkvärden räckte honom högra handen, som höll käppen med den stora silverknappen. Han flyttade inte käppen över i vänster hand, utan lät Konstantin, så gott han kunde, skaka hand med den sammantryckta näven och käppkryckan. Men gossen lät sig ingenting bekomma, utan sade raskt: »Jag tänkte, att jag skulle tala om för er, att ni har främmande hemma. Det är Öst Samuel och en herrkarl från staden. Jag vet det, därför att jag fick åka bakpå kärran.» »Jaså, jaså, det var ju stora nyheter. Kan det vara längesen de kom åkande?» »Det är väl en timme sen nu. Men de väntar nog, tills ni kommer hem, för de vill köpa ert gråa sto.» Det var besynnerligt. Konstantin kände den här dagen ingen respekt för kyrkvärden, ingen blyghet. Han vågade till och med skämta litet med honom. »Jag hörde också hur mycke de lura' er på, när de köpte häst av er i fjol, och jag vet hur mycke stoet är värt och hur mycke ni skulle kunna få för det, om ni stod på er.» I samma ögonblick, som han slungade ut detta, gav han sig på väg bortåt kyrkan. Han gick fort utan att fråga efter skoskavet. Kyrkvärden ropade efter honom, men Kon- stantin låtsade inte höra, utan gick på. Då kom den stora, tunga karlen springande efter honom. Konstantin bara ökade farten. Det vore bra, om kyrkvärden finge lära sig till en annan gång att inte hälsa med käppkryckan. Äntligen fann han för gott att stanna. Kyrk- värden kom fram till honom, andfådd och flå- sande. Det var väl inte möjligt, att han visste så mycket, som han skröt med? Han hade väl bara tyckt, att det var roligt, att en gammal karl fick springa sig fördärvad för att hinna fatt honom? Konstantin tog an en förnärmad min. Det var ju inte lönt, att han talade om vad han visste, ifall kvrkvärden trodde, att han ljög. Kyrkvärden mätte honom med en snabb blick. Därpå stack han handen i bröstfickan, tog fram sedelboken och bjöd honom en femkrona. »Jag tror inte, att du ljuger,» sa han. »Tala om vad du har hört, så får du den här.» Skomakarlärlingen, som ännu arbetade utan lön, blev het av iver, då han fick se en så stor sedel. Detta skulle Öst Samuel ha sett, han, som trodde, att Konstantin varken såg eller hörde, utan bara gick och sov. Han talade förstås om vad han visste och fick också den utfästa belöningen. När han vandrade vidare framåt vägen med femkronan i fickan, mötte han äntligen Krus Erik. Han kom genast att tänka på spirrtus. Detta var det allra bästa tillfälle att ge den till mästarn. De två var ensamma på vägen, och ingen såg eller hörde dem. Men Konstantin gick förbi Krus Erik utan att stanna. Det var nätt och jämnt, att han hälsade och talade om, att han skulle ut på sjön och meta abborrar. Han hade gjort upp det så i går med prästgårdspojkarna. Spirrtus låg i hans ficka, som vore den fast- nitad där. Han sade till sig själv, att han ändå borde pröva, om den dög till något, innan han gav bort den. * På måndagsmorgonen, då Konstantin återigen satt vid det låga, smala skomakarbordet mitt emot Krus Erik, kände han sig så eländig som aldrig förr i hela sitt liv. Han var alldeles på det klara med att han skulle avstå spirrtus till Krus Erik. Han ville inte ha något mer med den att göra. Hela söndagseftermiddagen under fisket hade han haft en märkvärdig tur. Han hade dragit upp den ena stora abborren efter den andra, medan de andra pojkarna, som hade varit med honom i båten, inte hade fått något alls. Det var inte så lätt att reda ut vad detta hade berott på. Han visste med sig, att han hade varit påpasslig och vaksam hela tiden, medan de andra hade pratat och haft tankarna på annat håll. Till sist hade de andra blivit retade över att de inte fick något och rott hem mitt i hans bästa fiskelycka. Och som fiskedoningen och båten var deras, hade de också behållit alla abborrarna. Om de inte hade blivit förargade över att han ensam hade haft lycka med sig, hade de kanske lämnat honom ett par fiskar. Nu fick han gå hem tomhänt. Detta var nog så förtretligt, men något ännu värre hade mött honom, då han kom hem. Öst Samuel hade varit inne hos föräldrarna och klagat på honom. Han hade velat hjälpa en god vän att köpa en häst, som var lik en, som han hade förut. Men nu hade de fått betala alldeles för mycket för kyrkvärdens gråa sto, och det var Konstantins skull. Det var kyrkvärden, som inte hade haft vett att tiga, utan sedan köpet väl blivit avslutat, hade han talat om för Öst Samuel hur han hade fått veta hur högt köparna ville gå. Och nu visste föräldrarna om femkronan och alltihop. De var uppskrämda, därför att han hade retat Öst Samuel. Vad skulle det bli av dem, om han tog sin hand ifrån dem? Mor kunde inte förstå vad som hade flugit i honom. Aldrig hade han gjort så förr. Hur kunde det falla honom in att förråda andras hemligheter och ta betalt för det till? Han var en riktig Judas. Femkronan hade mor tagit för att lämna den tillbaka till kyrkvärden. Sådana syndapengar kunde de inte behålla. Konstantin låtsade ännu för sig själv, att han inte trodde, att den där gravmullen hade någon makt. Men innerst inne var han ändå övertygad om att den var skuld till alltsammans. I dag på morgonen, då han gick hemifrån, hade han varit fast besluten att göra sig av med otyget, så snart han råkade Krus Erik. Men det besynnerliga var, att han inte hade förmått det. Han hade redan flera gånger stuckit ner handen i fickan och fattat om dosan för att ge bort den, men han hade ångrat sig. Det var ändå så förunderligt att äga en sådan sak. Och att fundera över detta om den hade någon makt. Ända hittills hade den bara bragt elände över honom, men det var i alla fall nästan omöjligt att skiljas från den. Han var så upptagen av dessa tankar, att han arbetade sämre än vanligt, och Krus Erik märkte det. Men Krus Erik hade ett så välsignat sätt med sina lärlingar. Han grälade aldrig på dem, utan han hade sina små knep, som han använde för att få dem att arbeta. »Du Konstantin,» sa han, »nu har jag märkt till två par skor, som vi ska göra färdiga i dag. Vad säger du, om vi skulle arbeta i kapp? Du gör det ena paret och jag det andra, och så söker vi att hinna om varandra.» Spirrtus for ner i fickan igen. Kontantin gick med stor iver in på förslaget. Här var nu ett gott sätt att få pröva om trolltyget dög till något. De plockade fram knivar, hammare, tänger, läster, läder, skogarn, pligg, allt möjligt, som behövdes för skoarbetet, och lade upp detta framför sig. Sedan räknade mästarn högtidligt: ett, tu, tre, och så började tävlingen. De skar till överlädret, klistrade fast fodret med rågmjölsgröt, och medan detta sedan tor- kade borta på spisen, tvinnade de ihop sko- garnet till hård tråd och satte fast svinborst i trådändarna. Med detta blev de färdiga lika snart båda två, men Krus Erik blev litet förvånad, när han såg hur händigt Konstantin bar sig åt, då han snodde tråden och satte fast borsten. Detta var andra tag än hans vanliga. Sedan var det att skära till sulan och lägga den i blöt, för att man lättare skulle kunna hantera den. Det var märkvärdigt att se hur raskt Kon- stantins kniv skar sig fram genom det hårda lädret. Erik Ersson hade i början arbetat litet lång- sammare än vanligt, för att inte Konstantin skulle bli missmodig och ge upp hoppet att vinna. Men han märkte, att han måste öka farten, om han inte ville bli efter själv. De tog till prylar och tråd för att sy ihop överlädret. Lärlingens händer rörde sig så snabbt som fågelvingar. Krus Erik måste be att få se på arbetet. Han blev rädd för att Konstantin slarvade i väg alldeles för fort. Konstantin visade honom en söm, som var både rak och jämn, ett riktigt pärlstickararbete. Inte ett ögonblick hade det fallit Krus Erik in, att han inte skulle segra i den här striden. Men nu började han bli litet betänksam. Konstantin hade försprång allaredan. Och fingrarna rörde sig så hastigt som på en, som gör trollkonster på en marknad. När det ringde till middagsrast, hade Kon- stantin redan den första skon uppsatt på lästen och satt och knackade på sulan för att få den jämn och hård. Krus Erik var inte alls så långt kommen. Ingen av dem såg upp från arbetet, fastän det nu var deras fristund. Konstantin tänkte helt flyktigt på hur glad han annars brukade vara, då han fick vila, men i dag var det en annan sak, i dag gick arbetet alldeles av sig självt. Han blev inte trött, och ingenting var svårt för honom. Han hade aldrig förut förstått, att det kunde vara roligt att arbeta. De kallades in i köket för att äta middag. När de hade kastat i sig litet mat, sprang de i kapp tillbaka till drängstugan, där de hade sin verkstad. Det andra gårdsfolket hade kommit under- fund med vad som stod på. Och i stället för att vila middag ställde sig karlarna att betrakta de två skomakarna. Alla tog för avgjort till en början, att Krus Erik skulle bli först färdig. Men då de hade sett på en stund, började de ändra tankar. Den ena efter den andra sade till Krus Erik, att han visst aldrig hade haft en så styv lärling som den här. Krus Erik satt nu och hamrade in pligg i sulan. Han slog ojämnt och häftigt, och alla tyckte, att han inte gjorde ett så gott arbete, som han brukade. För Konstantin däremot lade sig allt till rätta. Allt passade, som det skulle. Vart hammarslag träffade. »Det blir vackra skor, det där,» sa folket. »Du kan snart sköta dig på egen hand.» Arbetarna gick sin väg, och skomakarna klackade och pliggade alldeles tysta. Då uppgav Krus Erik ett lätt rop. Han hade slagit miste, fått tumnageln under hammarn. Konstantin kastade en hastig blick över till Krus Erik. Det var ingen, som hade varit så snäll mot honom och haft så mycket tålamod med honom. Nu först kom han att tänka på att mästarn kanske skulle känna det svårt, om det visade sig, att lärlingen kunde göra skor fortare och bättre än han. Gubben såg riktigt eländig ut, där han satt och knogade. Det var kanske inte en riktigt ärlig tävlan heller. Konstantin måste erkänna, att en annan dag, då han inte hade spirrtus i fickan, hade han inte kunnat arbeta på det här sättet. Han märkte, att Krus Erik inte en gång gav sig tid att hålla tummen i vatten. Han var förstås rädd, att Kon- stantin skulle få för stort försprång. Lärlingen kände med sig, att han borde spara mästarn och arbeta litet långsammare, men han kunde inte hejda sig. Det var en sådan arbets- lust över honom. När klockan slog fem, stod båda skorna färdiga framför honom. Han sköt dem över till Krus Erik. Mästarn lade ner den sko, som han höll i handen och som ännu inte var färdigsulad. Han synade lärlingens arbete både länge och väl. »Du behöver inte göra mer i dag. Du får gå hem,» sa han stilla. »Ska vi inte arbeta här i morgon också?» »Jo, jag ska arbeta här,» sa Krus Erik, och när han nu lyfte upp huvudet, flög en skarp och hatfull blick över till Konstantin, »men inte du. Jag kan väl inte sitta här med en lärling, som arbetar bättre än jag själv.» Konstantin svarade ingenting, utan tog sin mössa och gick mot dörren. På tröskeln vände han sig om. Handen for ovillkorligen ner i fickan, men den stannade där, kom inte upp igen. »Tack för mig då, och adjö!» sa han och stängde sakta dörren efter sig. * Konstantin stod i månskenet på gården där- hemma och sköt till måls med en pilbåge. Han hade gjort den åt sig för längesedan, då han var en tolv, tretton år, men han hade aldrig haft någon tur med skjutningen på den tiden. Det hade visst aldrig hänt, att han hade träffat det, som han hade siktat på. Nu däremot träffade han gång på gång pricken i en liten måltavla, som han hade ritat upp på lagårdsväggen. Han såg präktig ut, där han stod och sköt, och en av systrarna hade kommit ut för att se på honom. Han skröt och skrävlade om sin skick- lighet, som han aldrig hade gjort förr. Han kände ett oändligt behov att utmärka sig, att visa hur skicklig och stark och smidig han var. Han hoppades, att mor också måtte stå i fönstret och titta på honom. Men i själ och hjärta var han ängslig. Den där skjutningen hade han hittat på, bara för att han inte skulle behöva tänka på Krus Erik och spirrtus och allt elände. Så olycklig han var, kände han, att han älskade spirrtus högre än allt annat. Det var visst på samma sätt med honom som med folk, som tyckte om brännvin. De kunde inte låta bli det, fastän de visste, att det förstörde dem. Spirrtus hade inte skaffat honom annat än olyckor, men i alla fall kände han sig stolt och stark och duglig till allt möjligt, så länge som han hade den i fickan. När folk hade druckit, kände de sig visst också morska och lyckliga, alldeles som han nu gjorde. Men i andras ögon var de bara anskrämliga. Han skulle ha velat fråga någon om det var orätt, att han behöll spirrtus. Men mor tordes han inte tala vid om en sådan sak, och Krus Erik var förbittrad på honom. Han upphörde helt tvärt att skjuta och vände sig till systern, som stod och betraktade honom. Och i flygande fart berättade han henne allt det besynnerliga, som hade hänt honom. Hon satt tyst, medan han talade. Hon var så lik mor, där hon satt och hörde på under ett tydligt ogillande. När han hade slutat, yrkade hon på att han skulle tala om allt detta för mor. »Ämnar du skvallra för henne, du?» »Nej, men jag ska gå och be mor, att hon kommer hit ut, så att du får tala med henne.» Han förbjöd henne i högsta oro, men hon höll fast vid sin föresats och reste sig för att gå in. »Gör det inte! Jag skjuter dig,» ropade han och höjde bågen. Hon vände sig om, då han ropade. Han hade redan lagt pilen på bågen. Hon skrattade åt honom. Bågen var liten och svag och pilen en trästicka utan udd. Inte en gång en gråsparv kunde han fälla med det vapnet. »Skjut du, så mycke du vill! Jag går ändå in till mor,» sa hon envist. I detsamma kom pilen surrande och träffade henne rätt i ögat. – – – – – – – – – – – Hon låg sjuk länge, måste stanna på sjuk- huset i flera månader. När hon kom tillbaka hem, hade hon bara ett öga. Konstantin hade blivit sig lik igen, medan hon var borta. Han gick åter i lära hos Krus Erik. Han var snäll och beskedlig, en smula fumlig och liknöjd just som förut. »Du får inte tro, att jag siktade på ditt öga,» sa han. »Jag sköt mot takåsen, men just som pilen flög av, var det, som om en hand hade slagit till den, så att den for rätt emot dig.» »Jag såg, att du inte sköt åt mitt håll,» sa hon. »Jag gick till kyrkogårn med den på natten. Jag blev så förskräckt för den.» Hon satt och funderade. Hon hade blivit liksom en gammal, klok människa efter olyckan. Hon var inte mer ett barn. »Jag undrar vad det var,» sa hon. »Det var väl ingenting. Men jag kan längta efter den. Var dag längtar jag efter den.» »Jag tänker . . .» sa hon tvekande. »Om du bara trodde, om du bara inbillade dig, att du hade den . . . Då skulle du kunna skjuta och göra skor lika bra, som då du bar den i fickan.» »Nej,» sa han. »Jag har försökt, men det går inte. Det är, som om nå’n skulle säga till dig, att om du bara inbillade dig, att du hade ditt öga kvar, skulle du se lika bra som förut. Det där är så’nt, som en inte själv har nå’n makt över.»	Translation - English THE SERVANT-SPIRIT Krus Erik Ersson, the parish cobbler, and his apprentice, Konstantin Karlsson, had been sitting all week making shoes at the rectory, and now, at nine o'clock on a Saturday evening, they were on their way back to their homes, which were a long way off, out at the edge of the parish. It was autumn, and the sun had gone down long ago, yet they were not walking in the dark, but rather through clear air and moonlight. It was as lovely as could be. The lake below the rectory lay mirror-bright, with a track of silver down the middle, and in the fields you could see dewdrops on every grass-stem, like white pearls in the moonlight. It was only when they had to pass through one of the groves of trees that it became dark around them. It wasn't particularly late in autumn, so the branches still had their leaves, and the tree-crowns spread out like a vault of the deepest black above their heads. It felt rather strange to be walking, after six days of sitting bent over the shoemaker's bench. They panted under the weight of their packs, and neither of them said anything. But the road from the rectory went past the graveyard, and when Krus Erik Ersson caught a glimpse of the old-fashioned grave crosses on the far side of the wall, then thoughts came to him quickly. "Hey, Konstantin," he said (and his voice became simultaneously anxious and yearning, as if he was passing a stranger's orchard at night and saying how nice it would be to have some of the apples). "It would be a really good thing, if one could only get a little grave-soil." "Grave-soil!" said the apprentice, and he was so astonished he came to a dead stop. "You can have that all right, as much as you like. But what do you want it for?" Krus Erik halted too, and now he was so affected by his own thoughts that he spoke as if he'd lost his voice and could only whisper. "That is the way that you make a 'spirrtus'. And the man who possesses a spirrtus can have anything he wants. He'd never need to make another pair of shoes. He could build himself a farm as high as the bell-tower. And he could have horses and wagons, and would never have to walk a single step." The apprentice came from a home where they had pious and god-fearing ways and all superstition was banished. He stood in slow surprise and couldn't grasp that Krus Erik was being serious. "It surely isn't possible that you believe such a thing, Master Erik," he said. "Certainly I believe it," said the other. And right there, where they were standing outside the churchyard, he began to tell about this person and about that person, folk who had got themselves a spirrtus and had been served by it. But he wasn't able to convince the apprentice. He was a tall, good-looking boy of seventeen, with a modest but slightly sleepy appearance. He asked in all innocence: "If you truly believe in it, why don't you obtain one of these servants yourself?" Krus Erik answered sadly: "I couldn't get one myself. That's beyond my powers." With that he sighed, hitched his pack higher on his shoulders and resumed walking. Konstantin remained standing. It seemed as if a faint interest in the matter had begun to stir inside him. When Krus Erik had gone a couple of steps further he stopped and turned to the apprentice. "You surely aren't suggesting, Konstantin . . ." -- and his voice shook at the mere thought of something so unheard-of -- "You surely aren't suggesting that I should walk into the churchyard and dig up the soil?" "No," said the apprentice thoughtfully. "If you believe in it, I can quite understand why you can't." "I never go past a churchyard at night without wishing that I had a spirrtus," said Krus Erik, "but I just can't have one. So there's no point in us standing here any longer, Konstantin." He began walking again, but slowly, as if in the hope of being stopped. The apprentice didn't follow him this time either. The thing was, if there was one person in the world that he really cared for, that person was Krus Erik. His parents at home were so strict that they tolerated neither laughter nor games. The shoemaker, on the other hand, was always full of jokes and stories and was as much fun to be with as if he were a seventeen-year-old himself. And now, when Konstantin saw him walking off down the road, so old and worn out, he longed to do something that would gladden his heart. He kicked his foot at a tuft of grass, so that the dew-drops flew up into the air. "See here, Krus Erik, I'm no more scared of this one bit of earth than of any other, and if you'll just wait for me a minute, then you shall have what you wish for." He'd shaken off his rucksack and flung it down on the road as he was speaking. Now he made a spring over the roadside ditch and the wall, and he was standing within the churchyard before Krus Erik had time to order him to lay off. And actually it needed to come as a surprise to the master, for Krus Erik was as tender of his apprentice as of himself. He would never have let Konstantin go into a churchyard at night, if he'd been asked. Konstantin could easily have gathered a little soil from a grave that lay close to the wall of the churchyard, but this he didn't want to do. It wasn't often that he was in a position to distinguish himself in any way, but he had plenty of courage, and he wasn't averse to Krus Erik seeing it. He stopped finally at a grave mound that lay right in the middle of the churchyard, kicked away a bit of turf, and then dug out the topmost layer of earth with his hands. When he reckoned that he was far enough down into the ground, he took a couple of fistfuls of soil and filled the pockets of his jacket. How much soil was needed for an effective spirrtus, he didn't rightly know, but he thought that two full pockets ought to be enough. All this time he concentrated only on the matter in hand and felt no fear. His thoughts were busy with Krus Erik. He wondered what he would do, once he had a spirrtus to order about? Everything around him was silent and still. It was almost a pity that he had neither seen nor heard any of those things that people usually see and hear in churchyards, and would have no adventure to brag about when he got back to his master. He scraped the excavated soil back into the hole and laid the turf in place. He did it slowly, so as to use up some time. Krus Erik mustn't suppose that he'd been in a hurry. In the middle of the task he stopped and became completely still. It was not that a ghost had scared him, only a strange little thought. It occurred to him suddenly that he was being very stupid, taking so much trouble to obtain a spirrtus for Krus Erik. Why shouldn't he keep it for himself? He was in just as much need of it as his master. In a flash he saw in front of him a little grey cottage with a single room, which was his home; a tall, gloomy and terminally ill man, who was his father; a thin and careworn woman, who was his mother. Truly, truly, he needed a spirrtus more than anyone else did. A leaf fell from a tree, just as he reached this point in his thoughts. It rustled as it went past his head, and he stood up in a great hurry. He looked around him with wild eyes. Had something happened, while he was bent over the grave? Were the dead awaking? There was a distinct whisper from grave to grave. There was a glimpse of something white in among the black shadows of the trees. The dead were standing there in massed groups. They had been there all the time. In the next minute he would see them. He was frightened for a moment, but he stood still and didn't run. He fixed his gaze straight ahead. He mustn't start looking in all directions for ghosts. He didn't want to become terrified, didn't want to return to Krus Erik all out of breath and shaking. And with the steady gaze everything went away. The air became as if purified from ghosts and noisome creatures and he was able to walk back calmly. That notion of keeping the grave-soil for himself was something he thought no more about. What would be the point? It was only earth. It was really odd, that so wise a man as Krus Erik should have yearned for such a childish thing all his life. It was quite something to yearn for! Konstantin stuck his hands into his well-filled pockets. Just a bit of soil. But in that very moment Konstantin gave a loud, piercing scream, both wild and anguished, as if a ghost had shown itself to him. When his hands dug down into his pockets he knew that it was not soil that filled them, but the remains of dead men. It was fingers, toes, slippery eyeballs, shrunken skin, tangled hair, flesh, fragments of bone, tendons. And all of it was sticky, cold, clammy, half-dissolved. He tore out his hands and set off in a mad flight towards the wall and the road, all the while trying to turn his pockets out and in so as to get himself free of the dreadful stuff. And the whole time he screamed, not so much from fear as from disgust. When he stood on the road once more and looked around for Krus Erik, he spotted him moving quickly away from the church. He hurriedly grabbed his bag and slung it on his back. He would have liked to run just as fast as his legs would carry him, but he didn't want to make himself look ridiculous. He clenched his teeth together and stuck to his normal jogging pace until he caught up with his master, who stood waiting for him at the corner of the assembly-house. "How is it with you?" asked Krus Erik, and when Konstantin said he was fine he asked no more questions. You see, Krus Erik knew that when someone suspects that someone else has seen a strange sight, it's not good to speak of it until a little time has passed. As for collecting the grave-soil, well, he could see how that had gone, from the state of Konstantin's in- and out-turned jacket pockets. In the summer, and as far into the autumn as possible, Konstantin slept up in the loft, where he'd placed some boards around a corner that he called his bedroom. It wasn't large, a narrow little bed took up nearly all the space, but the good thing about it was that he could lie in on Sunday mornings. When he slept downstairs in his parents' cottage he had to get up early so that his mother could make the bed before going to church. Since he'd started work at Krus Erik's it wasn't uncommon for him to sleep in on Sunday until the wall clock down in the cottage struck twelve, but this didn't happen on the day after the adventure in the churchyard, for he was already awake before ten. He instantly remembered everything. There was still a sensation of disgust in his fingers. It crept through them at the mere thought of what they had touched. It had all been his imagination, of course, just fright. He knew that it was nothing more than earth that he'd stuffed in his pockets. But Krus Erik had been right, after all. It was no small thing to go into the churchyard at night and to take grave-soil. Suddenly he shot out of bed. What if mother and Krus Erik should meet on the way to church, and what if the master should say that yesterday evening Konstantin had gone into the churchyard to obtain a spirrtus! He had to talk to the shoemaker right away, beg him to keep quiet. Mother would be beside herself. Hurried as he was he could not bring himself to put on his shoes, they were so dusty and dirty. He took the polish and brush out of his rucksack and set the shoe on his hand. At the same time a whole mass of earth came pouring out of it. Konstantin drew in a sharp breath and exhaled again with a whistling sound. He saw how it had come about, this soil in his shoes. Most likely it had fallen in when he emptied his pockets in the churchyard. The shoes were so wide at the top. It couldn't have happened any other way. He looked at the grains of soil. It was like any other earth. Yes, that other thing had only been his imagination. He emptied both shoes and drew the earth together with his foot. There wasn't much, but . . . Perhaps it was still enough for a spirrtus? He opened his pack again and took out a little tin box that he used for keeping tacks and sole-pegs, emptied it and swept the grave-soil into it. Krus Erik would have his spirrtus. And he would see that Konstantin had been the man to bring it home. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Although Konstantin barely gave himself time to taste the milk and bread that mother had left out for him, he didn't get to Krus Erik's cottage in time, for his master had already set off to church. Konstantin hurried after him to try and catch him up on the way, and he would have done it too, if it hadn't been for the shoes. He didn't know what had happened to them. They slipped at every step, which they had never done before, and they scraped at his feet. They began to chafe his skin, so that he had to stop walking. He took off his shoes and placed them by the roadside. He couldn't bring himself to walk barefoot, but with the shoes on he couldn't move from the spot. He already had sores on both feet from the rubbing. While he was sitting on the ground, at a loss what to do, a cart came along, and in it sat Öst Samuel Andersson with a stranger, who looked like a gentleman. They were driving very slowly, which seemed odd, because Öst Samuel was a horse-dealer and normally he drove so his horse was flat on the ground afterwards. Öst Samuel was also an old friend of Konstantin's parents. Their cottage lay on outlying land below Öst's farm, and many were the times he had stood by them with support and advice, especially since father caught the severe disease that nearly always confined him to bed. When Öst Samuel came up to Konstantin he drew in the reins and asked him where he was headed. Well, he'd been going to the church, but now he'd got these rubbing sores, so he was going to have to go back home. Then Öst Samuel invited him to travel in the back of the cart. He wasn't going to the church, he was on the way to the churchwarden's in Aspnäs, but at least Konstantin could get a lift half way. Konstantin climbed up into the back of the cart. It was something, anyway. At the front of the cart they were talking about Konstantin. First the stranger said something, but in such a low voice that Konstantin didn't catch it. Öst Samuel, however, had a louder voice and didn't know how to keep it down. So Konstantin heard him say that Yes, he agreed the boy looked all right and was obliging enough, but there was no go in him, and that was what they very much needed. The father was still ill, the mother was working herself to death, but the lad would rather just idle about. Now they had apprenticed him to learn shoe-making, and the master thought him good-natured and willing, but he didn't think he'd be able to make a proper shoe-maker out of him. He had a poor touch and was too slow. The stranger said something in return, in his low voice. He must have suggested that perhaps Konstantin could hear what they were saying. Öst Samuel responded unconcernedly that the boy never heard anything. He always went about as if he were half-asleep. But for whatever reason Konstantin wasn't half-asleep that day. He heard all of this, and he heard everything else that the two travellers spoke of. Öst Samuel reined in the horse at the turn-off that went up to Aspnäs. Konstantin had to get down now, while the others drove up towards the farm. "You'd better stir yourself now, if you're hoping to get to church before the priest leaves the pulpit," Öst Samuel called after him. But truly, it was all very well for Konstantin to stir himself. The shoe-scraping plagued him with each step. He progressed no faster than a snail. Maybe the spirrtus didn't want him to give it away? The upshot was that the service had come to an end and the congregation were heading home before Konstantin even reached the hamlet around the church. One of the first people that he met was the churchwarden from Aspnäs, who came striding down the middle of the road, as big and broad as if he wanted to take all of it for himself. The shoemaker's apprentice, who had worked in every farm in the parish, knew the churchwarden at once. He placed himself in front of him, held out his hand and said Good-Day. The churchwarden offered his right hand, which was holding a walking-stick with a big silver knob. He didn't shift the stick into his left hand, but let Konstantin, as best he could, shake hands with the fist holding the head of the walking-stick. The lad didn't let it bother him, but said quickly: "I think I should let you know that you have strangers at home. It's Öst Samuel and a gentleman from town. I know that, because I had a lift on the back of their cart." "I see, I see, that's big news, certainly. Was it a while ago they dropped you off?" "It's been a good hour now. But they'll certainly wait till you get home, because they want to buy your grey mare." It was odd. On this day Konstantin felt no respect for the churchwarden, no shyness. He even ventured to pull his leg a little. "I also heard how much they swindled you out of when they bought the horse off you last year, and I know how much the mare is worth and how much you could get for it, if you stuck to your guns." As he flung this out he set off in the direction of the church. He walked quickly, ignoring the scraping shoes. The churchwarden called after him, but Konstantin pretended not to hear him and carried on walking. Then the big, heavy man came running after him. Konstantin merely increased his speed. It would be a good thing if next time the churchwarden learnt not to shake hands while holding his walking-stick. Finally he saw fit to stop. The churchwarden came up with him, out of breath and panting. It was surely not possible, that he knew as much as he'd boasted about? He probably just thought it would be a good laugh, to have an old man run himself into the ground trying to catch up with him? Konstantin's face took on an offended expression. What was the point of him saying what he knew, if the churchwarden thought he was a liar? The churchwarden sized him up with a sharp look. Then he thrust his hand into his breast pocket, brought out his wallet and proffered a five-kronor note. "I don't believe you're lying," he said. "Tell me what you've heard, and you can have this." The shoemaker's apprentice, who was still working without pay, grew hot with excitement when he saw such a large note. Here was a sight for Öst Samuel, who reckoned that Konstantin neither saw nor heard, but only walked and slept! He told what he knew, of course, and took the promised reward. When he walked further along the road with the five-kronor note in his pocket, he finally encountered Krus Erik. At once he thought of the spirrtus. It was the perfect opportunity to give it to his master. The two were alone in the road, and no-one saw or heard them. But Konstantin went past Krus Erik without stopping. He scarcely greeted him or said a word, just that he was going out on the lake to fish for perch. He'd arranged it the day before with the boys at the rectory. The spirrtus lay in his pocket as if it was riveted there. He told himself that he ought to find out if it amounted to anything before giving it away. * On Monday morning, when Konstantin sat once more at the low, narrow shoe-maker's table opposite Krus Erik, he was as wretched as he'd ever been before in his whole life. He was quite decided that he would give up the spirrtus to Krus Erik. He wanted nothing more to do with it. The whole of Sunday afternoon during the fishing he'd had remarkable luck. He'd pulled up one big perch after another, while the other boys who were with him in the boat caught nothing. It wasn't so easy to say what it was down to. He was conscious of having been attentive and vigilant the whole time, while the others chatted and had their thoughts on other things. In the end they became irritated at not catching anything and rowed home right in the middle of his best fishing spell. And since the fishing gear and boat were theirs, they kept all the perch too. If they hadn't been so annoyed with him for being the only lucky one, they would perhaps have given him a couple of fish. As it was he ended up going home empty-handed. That was vexing enough, but things grew worse when he got home. Öst Samuel had been at his parents' to complain about him. He'd wanted to help a good friend of his buy a horse like one he'd had before. But now they'd been made to pay far too much for the churchwarden's grey mare, and that was all down to Konstantin. It was the churchwarden, who hadn't known to keep quiet, but who told Öst Samuel, once the sale was over, how he'd learnt what price to hold out for. And now his parents knew about the five-kronor note and everything else. They were frightened because he had angered Öst Samuel. What would become of them all, if Öst Samuel stopped supporting them? Mother couldn't understand what had got into him. He'd never behaved like this before. What made him think of betraying other people's secrets and taking payment for it? He was a real Judas. Mother had taken his five-kronor note to give it back to the churchwarden. One couldn't keep such ill-gotten gains. Konstantin pretended to himself that he didn't credit the grave-soil with any power. But in his heart he was convinced that it was the cause of everything. That morning, when he was leaving home, he'd firmly decided to get rid of the dreadful thing as soon as he met Krus Erik. But the odd thing was, he hadn't been able to do it. Several times already he'd stuck his hand in his pocket and grasped the tin box in order to pass it over, but each time he'd regretted it. For it was such a strange thing to own something like this! And to think about it, and whether it had any real power. Although up to this point it had brought him only misery, yet it was practically impossible for him to part with it. He was so taken up with these thoughts that his work was worse than usual, and Krus Erik noticed it. But Krus Erik had a good way with his apprentices. He never had a go at them, but he had some little tricks that he used to get them working. "Hey, Konstantin," he said, "I see there are two pairs of shoes we need to finish today. How about if we have a race? You do one pair and I'll do the other, and let's see if we can keep up with each other." The spirrtus went back in the pocket again. Konstantin took up the challenge with great eagerness. Here was a good way of finding out if the magic stuff really did anything. They got out knives, hammers, pliers, lasts, leather, shoe-yarn, sole-pegs, every conceivable thing that was needed for shoe-making, and they set it all out before them. Then the master solemnly intoned One, Two, Three, and so the contest began. They cut out the uppers, glued the lining with rye-meal porridge, and while it was drying above the stove they twined the yarn together with the hard thread and attached pig bristles to the ends. At this point they were neck and neck, but Krus Erik was rather surprised when he saw how handy Konstantin was at twisting the thread and fixing the bristles. It was very different to his normal standard. Then it was time to cut out the soles and soak them to make them easier to handle. It was astonishing to see how quickly Konstantin's knife went round, cutting through the tough leather. At the start Erik Ersson had worked a bit slower than usual, so Konstantin wouldn't be discouraged and give up all hope of winning. But he saw that he'd better buck up, if he didn't want to be left behind himself. They picked up their punches and their thread to stitch the upper on. The apprentice's hands moved as fast as a bird's wings. Krus Erik asked if he might see his work. He was concerned that Konstantin would get careless, working at such a rate. Konstantin showed him a seam that was both straight and even, real exhibition work. Not for a moment had it crossed Krus Erik's mind that he might not win this contest. But now he started to become a bit thoughtful. Konstantin was already ahead. And he moved his fingers as swiftly as a conjuror at a market. When it rang for the dinner-break Konstantin had already placed the first shoe upon the last and was sitting tapping the sole to make it smooth and hard. Krus Erik was nothing like so far advanced. Neither of them looked up from their work, though it was now their free time. Konstantin had the passing thought of how much he usually relished his break, but today it was another matter, today the work went of its own accord. He didn't grow tired, and nothing was difficult for him. He'd never realized before that work could be fun. They were called into the kitchen for their dinner. When they'd thrown down a bit of food they raced back to the farm-labourer's cottage they were using as a workshop. The other folk on the farm had worked out what was going on. And instead of having a rest after lunch the men gathered to watch the two shoemakers. At first they all took it for granted that Krus Erik would finish first. But when they'd looked on for a while they started to change their minds. One after another they said to Krus Erik that he'd surely never had such a lively apprentice as this. Krus Erik was sitting now and hammering the pegs into the sole. His blows were uneven and violent, and everyone thought his work was not as good as usual. With Konstantin, on the other hand, all went well. The work was done just as it should be done. Every hammer-blow told. "They're lovely shoes, they are," the farm-folk said. "You'll soon be able to set up for yourself." The labourers went away, and the shoemakers heeled and pegged in silence. Then Krus Erik emitted a little cry. He had struck amiss, and hit his thumbnail with the hammer. Konstantin cast a hasty glance at Krus Erik. No-one else had ever been so kind to him or had so much patience with him. Now it occurred to him for the first time that perhaps his master would take it hard if it seemed that his apprentice could make shoes faster and better than he could himself. The old man looked truly miserable, sitting there and forcing himself on. Maybe it wasn't a fair trial either. Konstantin had to admit that on any other day, without the spirrtus in his pocket, he couldn't have gone to work in this manner. He noticed that Krus Erik didn't even take time to stick his thumb in some water. He was afraid, of course, that Konstantin would get too big a lead. The apprentice felt that he should spare his master's feelings and go a bit slower, but he couldn't stop himself. There was such a work-fury within him. When the bell struck five, both the shoes stood before him, complete. He shot them over to Krus Erik. The master laid down the shoe that he held in his hand, with the sole still not finished. He made a long and careful inspection of the apprentice's work. "You needn't do any more today. You can go home," he said quietly. "Aren't we working here tomorrow too?" "Yes, I'll be working here," said Krus Erik -- and when he raised his head he threw a sharp, hateful look towards Konstantin -- "but not you. I can't be sitting here with an apprentice who does better work than I do myself." Konstantin said nothing in reply, but took his cap and went towards the door. On the threshold he turned round. His hand went instinctively to his pocket, but it stayed there and didn't come out again. "Thanks for everything then. Goodbye," he said, and slowly closed the door after him. * Konstantin was standing in the moonlit yard at home and shooting at a target with his bow and arrows. He had done this on his own for years, since he was twelve or thirteen, but he'd never had any success with the shooting. It had certainly never happened that he hit what he was aiming at. But time and again today he hit the bullseye in the small target he'd drawn on the cowshed wall. He looked splendid standing there and shooting, and one of his sisters had come out to look at him. He bragged and boasted of his prowess, as he'd never done before. He felt a never-ending need to distinguish himself, to demonstrate how skilful and strong and adaptable he was. He hoped that mother, too, might be standing at the window and watching him. But in his heart and soul he was ill-at-ease. He'd only got on to this shooting as a way of not having to think about Krus Erik and the spirrtus and all the horrible things. He felt he was so wretched that he loved the spirrtus more than anything else in the world. It was just the same with him as with people who drank brännvin. They couldn't leave it alone though they knew it was destroying them. The spirrtus hadn't brought him anything but misfortune, but all the same he felt proud and strong and capable of doing anything, as long as he had it in his pocket. When people drank they too felt bold and successful, just as he did now. But in the eyes of others they were just a mess. He would have liked to ask someone if it was wrong, him keeping the spirrtus. But he dared not speak to mother on such a subject, and Krus Erik was furious with him. He suddenly stopped his shooting and turned to his sister, who stood and watched him. And it all came tumbling out, all the strange things that had happened to him. She sat quietly while he was talking. She was so like mother, while she sat there and listened with obvious disapproval. When he'd finished, she insisted that he should tell it all to mother. "You're not thinking of blabbing to her, are you?" "No, but I'm going to go and ask mother to come out here so you can talk to her." Highly alarmed, he utterly forbade her, but she stuck to her purpose and turned to go inside. "Don't! I'll shoot you!" he called out, raising his bow. She turned around at his call. He'd already laid an arrow in the bow. She laughed at him. The bow was small and feeble and the arrow was a piece of wood without a metal tip. With that weapon he couldn't even bring down a sparrow. "Go ahead and shoot! I'm still going in to mother," she said stubbornly. At that moment the arrow came whistling and struck her right in the eye. - - - - - - - - - - She lay sick for a long time; she had to stay at the hospital for several months. When she came back home, she had only one eye. Konstantin had become like himself again while she was away. He had gone back to apprenticing at Krus Erik's. He was good-natured, a bit clumsy and listless just like in the past. "You mustn't think I aimed at your eye," he said. "I shot at the roof ridge, but just as the arrow flew off it was as if a hand had struck it, so it came straight towards you." "Yes, I saw you didn't shoot in my direction," she said. "I took it back to the churchyard that night. I became so frightened of it." She sat and pondered. She had become like an older, wiser person since the accident. She was no longer a child. "I wonder what it was,"she said. "It was really nothing. But I do long for it. Every day I long for it." "I think . . ." she said, hesitating. "If you only supposed, if you only imagined, that you had it . . . then you'd be able to shoot and to make shoes just as well as when you carried it in your pocket." "No," he said. "I've tried, but it doesn't work. That would be like someone saying that if you just imagined you still had your eye you'd see as well as before. That's one of those things that we ourselves don't have any power over."

Source text - Swedish GÖRVÄLNS NATURRESERVAT Görvälns slotts huvudbyggnader härrör från 1600-talet och de flesta gårdsbyggnaderna finns kvar. Under denna herrgård lydde flera mindre torp vars arbetskraft har varit motorn för områdets utveckling sedan flera hundra år. Samma utsikt med hundra års mellanrum. Slottets arboretum, dvs en samling av olika träd och buskarter, har vuxit upp så slottet döljs. Landskapet förändras ständigt. Görvälns slott ligger vackert i en liten mälarvik. Vattnet har varit viktigt för områdets utveckling både some transportled och för fisket. Arbetsstyrkan vid Görvälns gård år 1907. Samma plats år 2012, maskiner har tagit över många arbetares roll. Jan Eriksson, en av ideella föreningen Görvälnlammets eldsjälar. Föreningens djur betar i hagar och skogar i reservatet. En mängd verksamheter som fårklippning och höstmarknad bedrivs under året kring gården. Här kan du se och lära dig umgås med djur och uppleva livet på en lantgård. Jungfrulin och darrgräs är exempel på orter som trivs med äldre lantbruk och som finns kvar i reservatet. Ängar är marker som slås för att få hö till djuren. Att de blor artrika är en bieffekt men bidrar till friska djur och långsiktig produktion. Först efter slåttern fick djuren gå på bete på ängarna. Uttrycket ”Ängen är åkerns moder” beskriver hur ängen gav vinterfoder åt djuren vars gödsel nyttjades till åkern. Det var ängarnas storlek och avkastning som bestämde åkrarnas storlek. Idag betas ofta ängarna utan slåtter. En del ”gamla” slåtterängsarter försvinner men markerna hålls öppna och betande djur på ängar är vackert för ögat. I det gamla bondesamhället delades markerna upp i inägor och utmarker. Inägorna var inhägnad slät och högproduktiv mark med åkrar och ängar. Utanför låg utmarkerna med hagar och glesa skogar där djuren betade för- och högsommar. Här hämtade man ved, stängselvirke och lite timmer. På gränsen mellan dagens åkermark och skogen finns ofta gamla ekar. Numera betas inte skogen i lika stor utsträckning och ekarna dör av skuggande unga träd. I gamla tider nyttjades skogarna till bete. Skogsavverkningen var småskalig. Skogarna bestod ofta av blandade trädslag. Ibland brände man för att få bättre bete och våtmarker var högintressanta för foder. Den olikåldriga blandskogen gynnade många idag ovanliga arter. Innan reservatet bildades bedrevs skogsbruk i delar av Görväln med gran och tall i likåldriga betstand. Bortrensad död ved, kalavverkning markberedning (plöjning i skog) skapade svårläkta spår i skogarna. Denna typ av skog blir ogästvänlig och artfattig. Genom en återupptagen småskalig skötsel kan många livsformer återkolonisera. Inom Görvälnreservatet finns också svåråtkomliga delar somm inte nyttjades så mycket ens under skogsbetestiden, här finns urskogsliknande miljöer med andra naturvärden. Stående och liggande döda träd är hem för både fåglar, insekter och svampar. Görväln är lättillgängligt för många människor. En mängd stigar och välskyltade leder genomkorsar området. Fornborgen Gåseborg är en bra plats för en picknick med Mälarutsikt. Hit lockas också bergsklättare och fågelskådare. Tätortsbarn är ibland ovana med skog men än byggs kojor och klättras i träd. Tyvärr innebär människor i naturen ibland slitage, nedskräpning eller som här klotter. Reservatsreglerna skall naturligtvis respekteras. Grundregeln är enkel: Inte störa och inte förstöra. Håll därför hunden kopplad av hänsyn till andra vandrare och till betande och vilda djur. Mycket finns att upptäcka i naturen. Förutom växter, svampar, djur och insekter finns lämningar från föregående generationers slit t ex gamla åkerdiken, hamlade träd, stenmurar och torpgrunder. Misteln är Sveriges enda trädlevande parasit. Den vackra vintergröna växten är fridlyst i hela landet men sprids nu och finns även in naturreservatet. Stanna upp en stund framför någon av områdets gamla ekar. Tänk att dessa bjässar kan vara flera hundra år gamla och vara värdar för en mängd olika livsformer. Bildens ekar finns på Hummelmora äng. Misse inte områdets mest spektakulära ek nära Sandviks brygga. Vi moderna människor mår väldigt bra av att få komma ut i naturen, man har bevisat det i olika vetenskapliga studier. Tätortsnära skogar är därför en tillgång som vi nu börjar få upp ögonen för. Med en anpassad skötsel kan upplevelsen göras rikare både gällande artsammansättning, formrikedom och ålder. De dystra produktionsskogarna kan börja leva igen om vi människor brukar mer ödmjukt. Här i Görvälns naturreservat bedrivs skötsel efter en skötselplan. Planens tanke är att genom skötsel gynna de värden naturen har och har fått genom långvarigt samspel mellan människa och natur. Exempel på sådant samspel är återupptaget skogsbete, att frihugga gamla ekar, bedriva slåtter, restaurera vattenmiljöer som blivit dikade och berätta om människans goda sidor. Att utelämna människans goda påverkan i ett reservat med ”fri utveckling” leder till att granen kommer att ta över och många arter kommer då att försvinna, liksom vårt ömsesidiga band till markerna. Besök gärna våra landskapsvårdande betesdjur i hagarna men respektera att det är djurens hem. Var rädd om stängslen och glöm inte att hålla grindarna stängda. En del stättor (övergångar) är förstängda för att djuren inte skall kunna smita ut. Den lilla bokskogen vid Sandvik är planterad. Vi befinner oss norr om bokens nuvarande naturliga spridningsområde, men den trivs och sprider sig. Gåseborg, den vackert belägna fornborgen med fina vyer över Mälaren. De väl synliga murresterna är bitvis täckta av ormbunken stensöta som delar med sig av sin grönska även under vintern. Nästan all natur vi har omkring oss är ett resultat av människlig påverkan. Vi har sedan urminnes tider brukat jorden för vår överlevnad och samtidigt skapat naturtyper vi lärt oss att älska. Ängar och hagar har inte bara fyllt våra skafferier utan även vår kulturskatt. Vår poesi och litteratur vimlar av dessa artrika öppna och inbjudande miljöer som nu håller på att försvinna. Det många idag uppfatter som orörd urskog har ofta nyttjats till plockhuggning, kolning och bränning av tjära. Skog och vår övriga natur är oftast kulturmarker, inte vildmarker. I detta häfte presenteras naturreservatet Görväln och några av dess kulturpåverkade naturvärden. Återges med tillstånd av Järfälla kommun.)	Translation - English GÖRVÄLN NATURE RESERVE Görväln House's main buildings date from the seventeenth century and most of the farm buildings survive. The estate controlled several smaller farms and their manpower was the engine of the area's development over several hundred years. The same view a century later. The estate's arboretum, i.e. collection of different species of tree and shrub, has grown up so that the house is hidden. The landscape is constantly changing. Görväln House is beautiful situated above a small inlet of Lake Mälaren. The water has been important for the area's development, supplying both transportation and fish. The workforce at Görväln farm in 1907. The same spot in 2012: machines have taken over the work of many labourers. Jan Eriksson, one of the leading lights of non-profit association The Görväln Lamb. The association's animals graze in the fields and woods of the reserve. A number of operations take place around the farm during the course of a year, for instance sheep-shearing and the autumn market. Here you can see and learn to be with the animals, and experience life on a farm. Milkwort and Quaking Grass are examples of plants that thrive under older farming methods and that still exist within the reserve. Meadows are fields that are cut to make hay for the animals. Their species-richness is a side-effect but it is conducive to healthy livestock and long-term productiveness. Only after hay-making are the animals put to graze in the meadows. The expression "The meadow is the cornfield's mother" refers to how the meadow supplied the winter fodder for animals whose manure was then used in the cornfields. The size of the meadows and their yields determined the size of the cornfields. Today the meadows are often grazed without any hay-making. Some of the old hay-meadow species disappear but the land is kept open (i.e. clear of trees and scrub) and the sight of animals grazing in the meadows is beautiful. In the old farm community the land was divided into "inland" (inägor) and "outland" (utmarker). The "inland" consisted of fenced fields and high production land such as cornfields and meadows. Beyond lay the "outland": enclosed areas of scrubby pasture and sparse woods where the animals grazed in early and high summer. From here people also gathered firewood, fence posts and a bit of timber. At the border between the fields and the woods there are often old oak trees. But now that the woods are not grazed to the same extent the oaks are dying from being shaded out by younger trees. In former times the woods were used for grazing. Felling for timber was on a small scale. The woods often consisted of mixed tree species. Sometimes burning was carried out to improve the pasturage. Wetlands were valued for their fodder potential. The mixed woodland with trees of different ages favoured many species that are uncommon today. Before the reserve was formed there was forestry in parts of Görväln, with spruce and pine stands of uniform age. Removal of dead wood, clear-felling and ground preparation (woodland ploughing) have left slow-healing scars within these woods. This type of woodland tends to be inhospitable and species-poor. Resuming small-scale management allows many life-forms to recolonize. Within Görväln reserve there are also some hard-to-reach areas that were not used very much during the era of woodland grazing; here there are habitats of an ancient woodland type with a secondary nature value. The dead trees, both standing and fallen, are homes for birds, insects and mushrooms. Görväln is easy to access for many people. A number of paths and well sign-posted walking routes pass through the area. The ancient fort of Gåseborg is a good place for a picnic with views of Lake Mälaren. It also attracts rock climbers and birdwatchers. Town children are sometimes unused to woods but they still build camps and climb trees. Sadly when people are in nature it sometimes leads to wear and tear, litter and graffiti, as seen here (in the photo). The rules of the reserve should of course be respected. The ground rules are simple: Do not disturb and do not destroy. So keep your dog on a lead out of consideration for other walkers and both grazing and wild animals. There is much to discover in the natural habitats. Apart from plants, fungi, animals and insects there are the traces of the work of former generations, for instance old field ditches, coppiced trees, stone walls and cabin foundations. Mistletoe is Sweden's only tree-living parasitic plant. This beautiful evergreen plant is protected throughout the land but is now spreading and it can be found in the nature reserve. Pause for a while before some of the region's old oak trees. Consider that these giants can be several hundred years old and be hosts for many different life forms. The oaks in this photograph are in the Hummelmora meadows. Don't miss the most spectacular oak tree in the region, close to the jetty at Sandvik. We modern people are healthier when we can get out into nature, as has been demonstrated in many scientific studies. Woodland that lies close to highly populated areas is a gateway to nature that we are now starting to pay more attention to. With appropriate management the experience can be enriched, e.g. the number of different species, and their variety of forms and ages. The gloomiest of production woods can start to come alive again if we people tend it with more humility. Here in Görväln's nature reserve we follow a management plan. The aim is to promote both the worth that nature has in itself and the worth it has acquired through long-standing interaction between people and nature. Examples of such interaction are the resumption of woodland grazing, clearing space around the old oaks, hay-making, restoration of wetlands that were drained, and seeking to demonstrate the good side of human activity. To omit the good influence of humans in a reserve with "free development" would mean that the spruces take over and many species would disappear, as would our reciprocal ties to nature. Feel free to visit the grazing animals who look after this landscape in their pastures, but remember that it's their home. Look after the fences and don't forget to shut the gates. Some of the stiles are closed in order to stop the animals getting out. The little beech wood beside Sandvik is planted. We are situated further north than the current natural region for beech, but this wood is thriving and it spreads itself. Gåseborg, the beautifully situated ancient fort with fine views over Mälaren. The easily visible wall remains are in some places covered with the fern polypody which contributes its greenery even in the winter. Nearly all the nature we have around us is a result of human influence. Since prehistoric times we have cultivated the soil to make a living and at the same time formed the types of nature we have learnt to love. Meadows and fields haven't only filled our larders but also our cultural treasury. Our poetry and literature teems with such species-rich, open and inviting landscapes, which are now on the point of disappearing. What many people today think are undisturbed primeval woods have often been used for coppicing, charcoal making and tar burning. Our woods and other natural habitats are most often cultured land, not wilderness. In this pamphlet we introduce the nature reserve Göräln and some of the natural riches shaped by human activity. In the pamphlet we also describe the measures taken by the Järfälla council to restore and preserve these riches both for future generations of Järfälla residents and for others.
