English to Spanish: The Homeric Versions (Jorge Luis Borges, 1932) General field: Art/Literary
Source text - English Ningún problema tan consustancial con las letras y con su modesto misterio como el que propone una traducción. Un olvido animado por la vanidad, el temor de confesar procesos mentales que adivinamos peligrosamente comunes, el conato de mantener intacta y central una reserva incalculable de sombra, velan las tales escrituras directas. La traducción, en cambio, parece destinada a ilustrar la discusión estética. El modelo propuesto a su imitación es un texto visible, no un laberinto inestimable de proyectos pretéritos o la acatada tentación momentánea de una facilidad. Bertrand Russell define un objeto externo como un sistema circular, irradiante, de impresiones posibles; lo mismo puede aseverarse de un texto, dadas las repercusiones incalculables de lo verbal. Un parcial y precioso documento de las vicisitudes que sufre queda en sus traducciones. ¿Qué son las muchas de la Ilíada de Chapman a Magnien sino diversas perspectivas de un hecho móvil, sino un largo sorteo experimental de omisiones y de énfasis? (No hay esencial necesidad de cambiar de idioma, ese deliberado juego de la atención no es imposible dentro de una misma literatura.) Presuponer que toda recombinación de elementos es obligatoriamente inferior a su original, es presuponer que el borrador G es obligatoriamente inferior al borrador H —ya que no puede haber sino borradores. El concepto de texto definitivo no corresponde sino a la religión o al cansancio.
La superstición de la inferioridad de las traducciones —amonedada en el consabido adagio italiano— procede de una distraída experiencia. No hay un buen texto que no parezca invariable y definitivo si lo practicamos un número suficiente de veces. Hume identificó la idea habitual de causalidad con la sucesión. Así un buen film, visto una segunda vez, parece aun mejor; propendemos a tomar por necesidades las que no son más que repeticiones. Con los libros famosos, la primera vez ya es segunda, puesto que los abordamos sabiéndolos. La precavida frase común de releer a los clásicos resulta de inocente veracidad. Ya no sé si el informe: En un lugar de la Mancha, de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme, no ha mucho tiempo que vivía un hidalgo de los de lanza en astillero, adarga antigua, rocín flaco y galgo corredor, es bueno para una divinidad imparcial; sé únicamente que toda modificación es sacrílega y que no puedo concebir otra iniciación del Quijote. Cervantes, creo, prescindió de esa leve superstición, y tal vez no hubiera identificado ese párrafo. Yo, en cambio, no podré sino repudiar cualquier divergencia. El Quijote, debido a mi ejercicio congénito del español, es un monumento uniforme, sin otras variaciones que las deparadas por el editor, el encuadernador y el cajista; la Odisea, gracias a mi oportuno desconocimiento del griego, es una librería internacional de obras en prosa y verso, desde los pareados de Chapman hasta la Authorized Versión de Andrew Lang o el drama clásico francés de Bérard o la saga vigorosa de Morris o la irónica novela burguesa de Samuel Butler. No conozco ejemplo mejor que el de los adjetivos homéricos. El divino Patroclo, la tierra sustentadora, el vinoso mar, los caballos solípedos, las mojadas olas, la negra nave, la negra sangre, las queridas rodillas, son expresiones que recurren, conmovedoramente a destiempo. En un lugar, se habla de los ricos varones que beben el agua negra del Esepo; en otro, de un rey trágico, que desdichado en Tebas la deliciosa, gobernó a los cadmeos, por determinación fatal de los dioses. Alexander Pope (cuya traducción fastuosa de Homero interrogaremos después) creyó que esos epítetos inamovibles eran de carácter litúrgico. Remy de Gourmont, en su largo ensayo sobre el estilo, escribe que debieron ser encantadores alguna vez, aunque ya no lo sean. Yo he preferido sospechar que esos fieles epítetos eran lo que todavía son las preposiciones: obligatorios y modestos sonidos que el uso añade a ciertas palabras y sobre los que no se puede ejercer originalidad. Sabemos que lo correcto es construir andar a pie, no por pie. El rapsoda sabía que lo correcto era adjetivar divino Patroclo. En caso alguno habría un propósito estético. Doy sin entusiasmo estas conjeturas; lo único cierto es la imposibilidad de apartar lo que pertenece al escritor de lo que pertenece al lenguaje. Cuando leemos en Agustín Moreto (si nos resolvemos a leer a Agustín Moreto):

sabemos que la santidad de ese día es ocurrencia del idioma español y no del escritor. De Homero, en cambio, ignoramos infinitamente los énfasis.
Para un poeta lírico o elegíaco, esa nuestra inseguridad de sus intenciones hubiera sido aniquiladora, no así para un expositor puntual de vastos argumentos. Los hechos de la Ilíada y la Odisea sobreviven con plenitud, pero han desaparecido Aquiles y Ulises, lo que Homero se representaba al nombrarlos, y lo que en realidad pensó de ellos. El estado presente de sus obras es parecido al de una complicada ecuación que registra relaciones precisas entre cantidades incógnitas. Nada de mayor posible riqueza para los que traducen. El libro más famoso de Browning consta de diez informaciones detalladas de un solo crimen, según los implicados en él. Todo el contraste deriva de los caracteres, no de los hechos, y es casi tan intenso y tan abismal como el de diez versiones justas de Homero.
La hermosa discusión Newman-Arnold (1861-62), más importante que sus dos interlocutores, razonó extensamente las dos maneras básicas de traducir. Newman vindicó en ella el modo literal, la retención de todas las singularidades verbales; Arnold, la severa eliminación de los detalles que distraen o detienen, la subordinación del siempre irregular Homero de cada línea al Homero esencial o convencional, hecho de llaneza sintáctica, de llaneza de ideas, de rapidez que fluye, de altura. Esta conducta puede suministrar los agrados de la uniformidad y la gravedad; aquélla, de los continuos y pequeños asombros.
Paso a considerar algunos destinos de un solo texto homérico. Interrogo los hechos comunicados por Ulises al espectro de Aquiles, en la ciudad de los cimerios, en la noche incesante (Odisea, XI). Ya se sabe: todo está en tener suerte.
Las dos versiones del principio —las literales— pueden conmover por una variedad de motivos: la mención reverencial del saqueo, la ingenua aclaración de que uno suele lastimarse en la guerra, la súbita juntura de los infinitos desórdenes de la batalla en un solo dios, el hecho de la locura en el dios. Otros agrados subalternos obran también: en uno de los textos que copio, el buen pleonasmo de embarcarse en un barco; en otro, el uso de la conjunción copulativa por la causal,[11] en y muchos tales riesgos hay en la guerra. La tercer versión —la de Cowper-es la más inocua de todas: es literal, hasta donde los deberes del acento miltónico lo permiten. La de Pope es extraordinaria. Su lujoso dialecto (como el de Góngora) se deja definir por el empleo desconsiderado y mecánico de los superlativos. Por ejemplo: la solitaria nave negra del héroe se le multiplica en escuadra. Siempre subordinadas a esa amplificación general, todas las líneas de su texto caen en dos gran des clases: unas, en lo puramente oratoria —Cuando los dioses coronaron de conquista las armas—; otras, en lo visual: Cuando los soberbios muros de Troya humearon por tierra. Discursos y espectáculos: ése es Pope. También es espectacular el ardiente Chapman, pero su movimiento es lírico, no oratorio. Butler, en cambio, demuestra su determinación de eludir todas las oportunidades visuales y de resolver el texto de Homero en una serie de noticias tranquilas.
¿Cuál de esas muchas traducciones es fiel?, querrá saber tal vez mi lector. Repito que ninguna o que todas. Si la fidelidad tiene que ser a las imaginaciones de Homero, a los irrecuperables hombres y días que él se representó, ninguna puede serlo para nosotros; todas, para un griego del siglo diez. Sí a los propósitos que tuvo, cualquiera de las muchas que trascribí, salvo las literales, que sacan toda su virtud del contraste con hábitos presentes. No es imposible que la versión calmosa de Butler sea la más fiel.

There is no problem so consubstantial with letters and their modest mystery as that suggested by a translation. Oblivion spurred by vanity, fear of confessing to mental processes we hazard to be dangerously common, the attempt to keep intact an incalculable reserve of darkness — things such as these all lie within the purview of more direct forms of writing. Translation, on the other hand, seems destined to illustrate aesthetic discussion. The model proposed for imitation is a visible text, not an inestimable labyrinth of projects of the preterite or the momentary and victorious temptation of an easy turn. Bertrand Russell defines an external object as a circular system irradiating possible expressions; the same can be said of a text, given the unfathomable repercussions of the verbal. A partial, precious document of the vicissitudes it undergoes remains in its translations. What are the many of the Iliad, from Chapman’s to Magnien’s, if not varied perspectives of a mobile fact, a long experimental collection of emphases and omissions? (There is no essential necessity in changing the language, this deliberate game of attention is not at all impossible within the same literature.) To presuppose that any recombination of elements must needs be inferior to its original is presupposing that draft 9 is necessarily inferior to draft H — for there can be but drafts. The concept of a final text corresponds only to religion or exhaustion.
The superstition of the inferiority of a translation — epitomized by the well-known Italian adage [traduttore, traditore] — proceeds from a distracted experience. There is no good text that does not seem invariable and definitive if we practice it a sufficient number of times. Hume identified the customary idea of causality with succession. Thus a good film, seen a second time, seems even better; we are prone to taking to be necessities what are but repetitions. With famous books, the first time is already the second, since we begin them knowing them already. The cautious common phrase about rereading the classics turns out to contain an innocent veracity. I no longer know if the report: “En un lugar de la Mancha, de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme, no hace mucho tiempo que vivía un hidalgo de los de lanza en astillero, adarga antigua, rocín flaco y galgo corredor” is good for a deity, impartial; I simply know any change to be sacrilegious, I cannot conceive of another beginning to Don Quixote. Cervantes, I believe, did without that slight superstition; he may well not have identified that paragraph. I, on the other hand, can only repudiate any divergence. Owing to my congenital exercise of Spanish, Don Quixote is a uniform monument, without variants beyond those yielded by the editor, the binder and the typesetter; the Odyssey, thanks to my happy ignorance of Greek, is an international library of works in prose and verse, from Chapman’s couplets to Andrew Lang’s Authorized Version or Bérard’s classical French drama or the vigorous saga of Morris or the ironic bourgeois novel of Samuel Butler. I abound in the mention of English names, as the letters of England always were intimate with that maritime epic, and the sequence of their versions of the Odyssey would suffice to illustrate the course of their centuries. That heterogeneous and even contradictory richness is not mainly attributable to the evolution of the English language or the mere length of the original or the translators’ deviations or differing capacities, but to that cause which in Homer must be privatory: the categorical difficulty in knowing what belongs to the poet and what belongs to the language. To this happy complication we owe the possibility of so many versions, all sincere, genuine, and divergent.
I know of no better example than that of the Homeric adjectives. Divine Patroclus, the nourishing earth, the wine-dark sea, the solipedous horses, the wet waves, the black ship, black blood, beloved knees: these are expressions that recur with a moving untimeliness. Somewhere it speaks of the rich men who drink the black water of Aesepus; elsewhere of a tragic king who, wretched in luscious Thebes, ruled the Cadmeans by unappealable determination of the gods. Alexander Pope (whose lavish translation of Homer we shall interrogate anon) believed these immovable epithets to be of liturgical character. Remy de Gourmont, in his long essay on its style, writes that they must have been enchanting once, though they no longer are. I have preferred to suspect these faithful epithets to be what prepositions still are: modest and obligatory sounds that usage adds to certain words, on which originality is not to be expected. We know that the correct phrase is “to go on foot”, not “at foot”. The rhapsodist knew that the correct usage was adjectivizing Patroclus with “divine”. In neither case would there be an aesthetic purpose. I provide these conjectures unenthusiastically; the only thing certain is the impossibility of dividing what belongs to the writer from what belongs to the language. When we read in Agustín Moreto (should we resolve to read Agustín Moreto):
What do they do all blessed day
Sitting so made-up at home?
we know that the day’s blessedness is an idiosyncrasy not of the writer’s but the Spanish language. With Homer, on the other hand, we ignore the emphases entirely.
For a lyric or an elegiac poet, our uncertainty regarding his intentions would be nigh disqualifying; not so, however, for a punctilious elaborator of vast arguments. The facts of the Odyssey and the Iliad survive plainly, but Achilles and Ulysses have disappeared, along with what Homer imagined upon naming them, and what he truly thought of them. The present state of his works is akin to a complicated equation that presents precise relations between unknown figures. There can be nothing of greater richness for those who translate. Browning’s most famous book consists of ten detailed accounts of a single crime according to those involved in it. All the contrast derives from the characters, not the facts, and it is almost as intense and abysmal as that of ten fair versions of Homer.
The beautiful Newman-Arnold discussion (1861-62), more important than its two interlocutors, reasoned extensively on the two basic ways of translating. In it, Newman vindicated the literal form, retaining all the verbal singularities; Arnold, the severe elimination of those details that distract or detain, subordinating the ever irregular Homer of every line to the essential or conventional Homer, made of smoothness in syntax, smoothness of ideas, flowing quickness, exaltation. The latter conduct can supply the gratifications of uniformity and gravity; the former, continual and small surprises.
I now move on to consider some fates of a single Homeric text. I inquire on the facts communicated by Ulysses to the ghost of Achilles, in the city of the Cimmerians, in the unending night (Odyssey, XI). It dwells on Neoptolemus, son of Achilles. Buckley’s literal version runs thusly: “But when we had sacked the lofty city of Priam, having his share and excellent reward, he embarked unhurt on a ship, neither stricken with the sharp brass, nor wounded [in fighting] hand to hand, as oftentimes happens in war; for Mars confusedly raves.” That of the likewise literal albeit archaizing Butcher and Lang: “But after we had sacked the steep city of Priam, he embarked unscathed with his share of the spoil, and with a noble prize; he was not smitten with the sharp spear and got no wound in the close fight: and many such chances there be in war, as Ares rageth confusedly.” Cowper’s, from 1791: “At length, when we had sack’d the lofty town // Of Priam, laden with abundant spoils, // He safe embark’d, not pierced by shaft of spear // Sent from afar, nor smitten by the sword, // As oft in war befalls, where wounds are dealt // Promiscuous, at the will of fiery Mars.” That directed by Pope in 1725: “When Troy’s proud bulwarks smok’d upon the ground, // Greece, to reward her soldier’s gallant toils, // Heap’d high his army with unnumber’d spoils. // Thus great in glory, from the din of war // Safe he returned, without one hostile scar; // Though spears in iron tempests rain’d around, // Yet innocent they play’d, and guiltless of a wound.” That of George Chapman, from 1614: “High Troy depopulate he made ascend // To his fair ship, with prize and treasure store: // Safe, and no touch, away with him he bore, // Of far-off hurl’d lance, or of close-fought sword, // Whose wounds, for favours, War doth oft afford, // Which he (though sought) missed, in war’s closest wage; // In close fights, Mars doth never fight, but rage.” Butler’s, from 1900: “Yet when we had sacked the city of Priam he got his handsome share of the prize money and went on board (such is the fortune of war) without a wound upon him, neither from a thrown spear nor in close combat, for the rage of Mars is a matter of great chance.”
The first two versions — the literal ones — can be moving for a variety of motives: the reverential mention of the sacking, the naïve clarification that one tends to get wounded in war, the sudden juncture of the infinite disorders of battle in a single god, the fact of madness in the god. Other subaltern enjoyments are active as well: in one of the texts I copy, the goodly pleonasm of embarking on a ship; in another, the use of the copulative conjunction for the causal, in “and many such chances there be in war”. The third version — that of Cowper — is the most innocuous of all: it is literal to the degree the duties of Miltonic prosody permit. Pope’s is extraordinary. His luxurious diction (like Góngora’s) allows itself to be defined by the inconsiderate and mechanical use of superlatives. For example: the hero's lonely black ship here gets multiplied into a squadron. Always subordinate to this general application, all the lines of his text fall into two great classes: some into the purely oratorical: “And when the gods our arms with conquest crown’d”; others, into the visual: “When Troy’s proud bulwarks smok’d upon the ground”. Such is Pope. Likewise spectacular is the fiery Chapman, but his movement is lyrical, not oratorical. Butler, on the other hand, shows his determination to elude all visual opportunities and solve Homer’s text in a series of calm reports.
Which of the many translations is faithful?, my reader may perhaps desire to know. I repeat that none or all. If the fidelity must be to Homer’s representations, to the irrecoverable men and days that he imagined, it can be none for us, all for a tenth-century Greek. If to the purposes he had, any of the many I transcribed, save the literal ones, which take all their virtue from the contrast with present-day habits. It is not impossible that Butler’s tranquil version be the truest.
German to English: The Magic Mountain - First Chapter - Arrival (Thomas Mann, 1924) General field: Art/Literary
Source text - German Ein einfacher junger Mensch reiste im Hochsommer von Hamburg, seiner Vaterstadt, nach Davos-Platz im Graubündischen. Er fuhr auf Besuch für drei Wochen.
Von Hamburg bis dort hinauf, das ist aber eine weite Reise; zu weit eigentlich im Verhältnis zu einem so kurzen Aufenthalt. Es geht durch mehrerer Herren Länder, bergauf und bergab, von der süddeutschen Hochebene hinunter zum Gestade des Schwäbischen Meeres und zu Schiff über seine springenden Wellen hin, dahin über Schlünde, die früher für unergründlich galten.
Von da an verzettelt sich die Reise, die solange großzügig, in direkten Linien vonstatten ging. Es gibt Aufenthalte und Umständlichkeiten. Beim Orte Rorschach, auf schweizerischem Gebiet, vertraut man sich wieder der Eisenbahn, gelangt aber vorderhand nur bis Landquart, einer kleinen Alpenstation, wo man den Zug zu wechseln gezwungen ist. Es ist eine Schmalspurbahn, die man nach längerem Herumstehen in windiger und wenig reizvoller Gegend besteigt, und in dem Augenblick, wo die kleine, aber offenbar ungewöhnlich zugkräftige Maschine sich in Bewegung setzt, beginnt der eigentlich abenteuerliche Teil der Fahrt, ein jäher und zäher Aufstieg, der nicht enden zu wollen scheint. Denn Station Landquart liegt vergleichsweise noch in mäßiger Höhe; jetzt aber geht es auf wilder, drangvoller Felsenstraße allen Ernstes ins Hochgebirge.
Hans Castorp – dies der Name des jungen Mannes – befand sich allein mit seiner krokodilsledernen Handtasche, einem Geschenk seines Onkels und Pflegevaters, Konsul Tienappel, um auch diesen Namen hier gleich zu nennen, – seinem Wintermantel, der an einem Haken schaukelte, und seiner Plaidrolle in einem kleinen grau gepolsterten Abteil; er saß bei niedergelassenem Fenster, und da der Nachmittag sich mehr und mehr verkühlte, so hatte er, Familiensöhnchen und Zärtling, den Kragen seines modisch weiten, auf Seide gearbeiteten Sommerüberziehers aufgeschlagen. Neben ihm auf der Bank lag ein broschiertes Buch namens „Ocean steamships“, worin er zu Anfang der Reise bisweilen studiert hatte; jetzt aber lag es vernachlässigt da, indes der hereinstreichende Atem der schwer keuchenden Lokomotive seinen Umschlag mit Kohlenpartikeln verunreinigte.
Zwei Reisetage entfernen den Menschen – und gar den jungen, im Leben noch wenig fest wurzelnden Menschen – seiner Alltagswelt, all dem, was er seine Pflichten, Interessen, Sorgen, Aussichten nannte, viel mehr, als er sich auf der Droschkenfahrt zum Bahnhof wohl träumen ließ. Der Raum, der sich drehend und fliehend zwischen ihn und seine Pflanzstätte wälzt, bewährt Kräfte, die man gewöhnlich der Zeit vorbehalten glaubt; von Stunde zu Stunde stellt er innere Veränderungen her, die den von ihr bewirkten sehr ähnlich sind, aber sie in gewisser Weise übertreffen. Gleich ihr erzeugt er Vergessen; er tut es aber, indem er die Person des Menschen aus ihren Beziehungen löst und ihn in einen freien und ursprünglichen Zustand versetzt, – ja, selbst aus dem Pedanten und Pfahlbürger macht er im Handumdrehen etwas wie einen Vagabunden. Zeit, sagt man, ist Lethe; aber auch Fernluft ist so ein Trank, und sollte sie weniger gründlich wirken, so tut sie es dafür desto rascher.
Dergleichen erfuhr auch Hans Castorp. Er hatte nicht beabsichtigt, diese Reise sonderlich wichtig zu nehmen, sich innerlich auf sie einzulassen. Seine Meinung vielmehr war gewesen, sie rasch abzutun, weil sie abgetan werden mußte, ganz als derselbe zurückzukehren, als der er abgefahren war, und sein Leben genau dort wieder aufzunehmen, wo er es für einen Augenblick hatte liegen lassen müssen. Noch gestern war er völlig in dem gewohnten Gedankenkreise befangen gewesen, hatte sich mit dem jüngst Zurückliegenden, seinem Examen, und dem unmittelbar Bevorstehenden, seinem Eintritt in die Praxis bei Tunder & Wilms (Schiffswerft, Maschinenfabrik und Kesselschmiede), beschäftigt und über die nächsten drei Wochen mit soviel Ungeduld hinweggeblickt, als seine Gemütsart nur immer zuließ. Jetzt aber war ihm doch, als ob die Umstände seine volle Aufmerksamkeit erforderten und als ob es nicht angehe, sie auf die leichte Achsel zu nehmen. Dieses Emporgehobenwerden in Regionen, wo er noch nie geatmet und wo, wie er wußte, völlig ungewohnte, eigentümlich dünne und spärliche Lebensbedingungen herrschten, – es fing an, ihn zu erregen, ihn mit einer gewissen Ängstlichkeit zu erfüllen. Heimat und Ordnung lagen nicht nur weit zurück, sie lagen hauptsächlich klaftertief unter ihm, und noch immer stieg er darüber hinaus. Schwebend zwischen ihnen und dem Unbekannten fragte er sich, wie es ihm dort oben ergehen werde. Vielleicht war es unklug und unzuträglich, daß er, geboren und gewohnt, nur ein paar Meter über dem Meeresspiegel zu atmen, sich plötzlich in diese extremen Gegenden befördern ließ, ohne wenigstens einige Tage an einem Platze von mittlerer Lage verweilt zu haben? Er wünschte, am Ziel zu sein, denn einmal oben, dachte er, würde man leben wie überall und nicht so wie jetzt im Klimmen daran erinnert sein, in welchen unangemessenen Sphären man sich befand. Er sah hinaus: der Zug wand sich gebogen auf schmalem Paß; man sah die vorderen Wagen, sah die Maschine, die in ihrer Mühe braune, grüne und schwarze Rauchmassen ausstieß, die verflatterten. Wasser rauschten in der Tiefe zur Rechten; links strebten dunkle Fichten zwischen Felsblöcken gegen einen steingrauen Himmel empor. Stockfinstere Tunnel kamen, und wenn es wieder Tag wurde, taten weitläufige Abgründe mit Ortschaften in der Tiefe sich auf. Sie schlossen sich, neue Engpässe folgten, mit Schneeresten in ihren Schründen und Spalten. Es gab Aufenthalte an armseligen Bahnhofshäuschen, Kopfstationen, die der Zug in entgegengesetzter Richtung verließ, was verwirrend wirkte, da man nicht mehr wußte, wie man fuhr und sich der Himmelsgegenden nicht länger entsann. Großartige Fernblicke in die heilig-phantasmagorisch sich türmende Gipfelwelt des Hochgebirges, in das man hinan- und hineinstrebte, eröffneten sich und gingen dem ehrfürchtigen Auge durch Pfadbiegungen wieder verloren. Hans Castorp bedachte, daß er die Zone der Laubbäume unter sich gelassen habe, auch die der Singvögel wohl, wenn ihm recht war, und dieser Gedanke des Aufhörens und der Verarmung bewirkte, daß er, angewandelt von einem leichten Schwindel und Übelbefinden, für zwei Sekunden die Augen mit der Hand bedeckte. Das ging vorüber. Er sah, daß der Aufstieg ein Ende genommen hatte, die Paßhöhe überwunden war. Auf ebener Talsohle rollte der Zug nun bequemer dahin.
Es war gegen acht Uhr, noch hielt sich der Tag. Ein See erschien in landschaftlicher Ferne, seine Flut war grau, und schwarz stiegen Fichtenwälder neben seinen Ufern an den umgebenden Höhen hinan, wurden dünn weiter oben, verloren sich und ließen nebelig-kahles Gestein zurück. Man hielt an einer kleinen Station, es war Davos-Dorf, wie Hans Castorp draußen ausrufen hörte, er würde nun binnen kurzem am Ziele sein. Und plötzlich vernahm er neben sich Joachim Ziemßens Stimme, seines Vetters gemächliche Hamburger Stimme, die sagte: „Tag, du, nun steige nur aus“; und wie er hinaussah, stand unter seinem Fenster Joachim selbst auf dem Perron, in braunem Ulster, ganz ohne Kopfbedeckung und so gesund aussehend wie in seinem Leben noch nicht. Er lachte und sagte wieder:
„Komm nur heraus, du, geniere dich nicht!“
„Ich bin aber noch nicht da“, sagte Hans Castorp verdutzt und noch immer sitzend.
„Doch, du bist da. Dies ist das Dorf. Zum Sanatorium ist es näher von hier. Ich habe ’nen Wagen mit. Gib mal deine Sachen her.“
Und lachend, verwirrt, in der Aufregung der Ankunft und des Wiedersehens reichte Hans Castorp ihm Handtasche und Wintermantel, die Plaidrolle mit Stock und Schirm und schließlich auch „Ocean steamships“ hinaus. Dann lief er über den engen Korridor und sprang auf den Bahnsteig zur eigentlichen und sozusagen nun erst persönlichen Begrüßung mit seinem Vetter, die sich ohne Überschwang, wie zwischen Leuten von kühlen und spröden Sitten, vollzog. Es ist sonderbar zu sagen, aber von jeher hatten sie es vermieden, einander beim Vornamen zu nennen, einzig und allein aus Scheu vor zu großer Herzenswärme. Da sie sich aber doch nicht gut mit Nachnamen anreden konnten, so beschränkten sie sich auf das Du. Das war eingewurzelte Gewohnheit zwischen den Vettern.
Ein Mann in Livree, mit Tressenmütze, sah zu, wie sie einander – der junge Ziemßen in militärischer Haltung – rasch und ein bißchen verlegen die Hände schüttelten, und kam dann heran, um sich Hans Castorps Gepäckschein auszubitten; denn er war der Concierge des Internationalen Sanatoriums „Berghof“ und zeigte sich willens, den großen Koffer des Gastes vom Bahnhof „Platz“ zu holen, indes die Herren direkt mit dem Wagen zum Abendbrot fuhren. Der Mann hinkte auffallend, und so war das erste, was Hans Castorp Joachim Ziemßen fragte:
„Ist das ein Kriegsveteran? Was hinkt er denn so?“
„Ja, danke!“ erwiderte Joachim etwas bitter. „Ein Kriegsveteran! Der hat es im Knie – oder hatte es doch, denn dann hat er sich die Kniescheibe herausnehmen lassen.“
Hans Castorp besann sich so rasch er konnte. „Ja, so!“ sagte er, indem er im Gehen den Kopf hob und sich flüchtig umblickte. „Du wirst mir doch aber nicht weismachen wollen, daß du noch so etwas hast? Du siehst ja aus, als ob du dein Portepee schon hättest und gerade aus dem Manöver kämst.“ Und er sah den Vetter von der Seite an.
Joachim war größer und breiter als er, ein Bild der Jugendkraft und wie für die Uniform geschaffen. Er war von dem sehr braunen Typus, den seine blonde Heimat nicht selten hervorbringt, und seine ohnehin dunkle Gesichtshaut war durch Verbrennung beinahe bronzefarben geworden. Mit seinen großen schwarzen Augen und dem dunklen Schnurrbärtchen über dem vollen, gut geschnittenen Munde wäre er geradezu schön gewesen, wenn er nicht abstehende Ohren gehabt hätte. Sie waren sein einziger Kummer und Lebensschmerz gewesen bis zu einem gewissen Zeitpunkt. Jetzt hatte er andere Sorgen. Hans Castorp fuhr fort:
„Du kommst doch gleich mit mir hinunter? Ich sehe wirklich kein Hindernis.“
„Gleich mit dir?“ fragte der Vetter und wandte ihm seine großen Augen zu, die immer sanft gewesen waren, in diesen fünf Monaten aber einen etwas müden, ja traurigen Ausdruck angenommen hatten. „Gleich wann?“
„Na, in drei Wochen.“
„Ach so, du fährst wohl schon wieder nach Hause in deinen Gedanken“, antwortete Joachim. „Nun, warte nur, du kommst ja eben erst an. Drei Wochen sind freilich fast nichts für uns hier oben, aber für dich, der du zu Besuch hier bist und überhaupt nur drei Wochen bleiben sollst, für dich ist es doch eine Menge Zeit. Erst akklimatisiere dich mal, das ist gar nicht so leicht, sollst du sehen. Und dann ist das Klima auch nicht das einzig Sonderbare bei uns. Du wirst hier mancherlei Neues sehen, paß auf. Und was du von mir sagst, das geht denn doch nicht so flott mit mir, du, ‚in drei Wochen nach Haus‘, das sind so Ideen von unten. Ich bin ja wohl braun, aber das ist hauptsächlich Schneeverbrennung und hat nicht viel zu bedeuten, wie Behrens auch immer sagt, und bei der letzten Generaluntersuchung hat er gesagt, ein halbes Jahr wird es wohl ziemlich sicher noch dauern.“
„Ein halbes Jahr? Bist du toll?“ rief Hans Castorp. Sie hatten sich eben vor dem Stationsgebäude, das nicht viel mehr als ein Schuppen war, in das gelbe Kabriolett gesetzt, das dort auf steinigem Platze bereit stand, und während die beiden Braunen anzogen, warf sich Hans Castorp empört auf dem harten Kissen herum. „Ein halbes Jahr? du bist ja schon fast ein halbes Jahr hier! Man hat doch nicht so viel Zeit –!“
„Ja, Zeit“, sagte Joachim und nickte mehrmals geradeaus, ohne sich um des Vetters ehrliche Entrüstung zu kümmern. „Die springen hier um mit der menschlichen Zeit, das glaubst du gar nicht. Drei Wochen sind wie ein Tag vor ihnen. Du wirst schon sehen. Du wirst das alles schon lernen“, sagte er und setzte hinzu: „Man ändert hier seine Begriffe.“
Hans Castorp betrachtete ihn unausgesetzt von der Seite.
„Du hast dich aber doch prachtvoll erholt“, sagte er kopfschüttelnd.
„Ja, meinst du?“ antwortete Joachim. „Nicht wahr, ich denke doch auch!“ sagte er und setzte sich höher ins Kissen zurück; doch nahm er gleich wieder eine schrägere Stellung ein. „Es geht mir ja besser“, erklärte er; „aber gesund bin ich eben noch nicht. Links oben, wo früher Rasseln zu hören war, klingt es jetzt nur noch rauh, das ist nicht so schlimm, aber unten ist es noch sehr rauh, und dann sind auch im zweiten Interkostalraum Geräusche.“
„Wie gelehrt du geworden bist“, sagte Hans Castorp.
„Ja, das ist, weiß Gott, eine nette Gelehrsamkeit. Die hätte ich gern im Dienste schon wieder verschwitzt“, erwiderte Joachim. „Aber ich habe noch Sputum“, sagte er mit einem zugleich lässigen und heftigen Achselzucken, das ihm nicht gut zu Gesichte stand, und ließ seinen Vetter etwas sehen, was er aus der ihm zugekehrten Seitentasche seines Ulsters zur Hälfte herauszog und gleich wieder verwahrte: eine flache, geschweifte Flasche aus blauem Glase mit einem Metallverschluß. „Das haben die meisten von uns hier oben“, sagte er. „Es hat auch einen Namen bei uns, so einen Spitznamen, ganz fidel. Du siehst dir die Gegend an?“
Das tat Hans Castorp, und er äußerte: „Großartig!“
„Findest du?“ fragte Joachim.
Sie hatten die unregelmäßig bebaute, der Eisenbahn gleichlaufende Straße ein Stück in der Richtung der Talachse verfolgt, hatten dann nach links hin das schmale Geleise gekreuzt, einen Wasserlauf überquert und trotteten nun auf sanft ansteigendem Fahrweg bewaldeten Hängen entgegen, dorthin, wo auf niedrig vorspringendem Wiesenplateau, die Front südwestlich gewandt, ein langgestrecktes Gebäude mit Kuppelturm, das vor lauter Balkonlogen von weitem löcherig und porös wirkte wie ein Schwamm, soeben die ersten Lichter aufsteckte. Es dämmerte rasch. Ein leichtes Abendrot, das eine Weile den gleichmäßig bedeckten Himmel belebt hatte, war schon verblichen, und jener farblose, entseelte und traurige Übergangszustand herrschte in der Natur, der dem vollen Einbruch der Nacht unmittelbar vorangeht. Das besiedelte Tal, lang hingestreckt und etwas gewunden, beleuchtete sich nun überall, auf dem Grunde sowohl wie da und dort an den beiderseitigen Lehnen, – an der rechten zumal, die auslud, und an der Baulichkeiten terrassenförmig aufstiegen. Links liefen Pfade die Wiesenhänge hinan und verloren sich in der stumpfen Schwärze der Nadelwälder. Die entfernteren Bergkulissen, hinten am Ausgang, gegen den das Tal sich verjüngte, zeigten ein nüchternes Schieferblau. Da ein Wind sich aufgemacht hatte, wurde die Abendkühle empfindlich.
„Nein, ich finde es offen gestanden nicht so überwältigend“, sagte Hans Castorp. „Wo sind denn die Gletscher und Firnen und die gewaltigen Bergesriesen? Diese Dinger sind doch nicht sehr hoch, wie mir scheint.“
„Doch, sie sind hoch“, antwortete Joachim. „Du siehst die Baumgrenze fast überall, sie markiert sich ja auffallend scharf, die Fichten hören auf, und damit hört alles auf, aus ist es, Felsen, wie du bemerkst. Da drüben, rechts von dem Schwarzhorn, dieser Zinke dort, hast du sogar einen Gletscher, siehst du das Blaue noch? Er ist nicht groß, aber es ist ein Gletscher, wie es sich gehört, der Scaletta-Gletscher. Piz Michel und Tinzenhorn in der Lücke, du kannst sie von hier aus nicht sehen, liegen auch immer im Schnee, das ganze Jahr.“
„In ewigem Schnee“, sagte Hans Castorp.
„Ja, ewig, wenn du willst. Doch, hoch ist das alles schon. Aber wir selbst sind scheußlich hoch, mußt du bedenken. Sechzehnhundert Meter über dem Meer. Da kommen die Erhebungen nicht so zur Geltung.“
„Ja, war das eine Kletterei! Mir ist angst und bange geworden, kann ich dir sagen. Sechzehnhundert Meter! Das sind ja annähernd fünftausend Fuß, wenn ich es ausrechne. In meinem Leben war ich noch nicht so hoch.“ Und Hans Castorp nahm neugierig einen tiefen, probenden Atemzug von der fremden Luft. Sie war frisch – und nichts weiter. Sie entbehrte des Duftes, des Inhaltes, der Feuchtigkeit, sie ging leicht ein und sagte der Seele nichts.
„Ausgezeichnet!“ bemerkte er höflich.
„Ja, es ist ja eine berühmte Luft. Übrigens präsentiert sich die Gegend heute abend nicht vorteilhaft. Manchmal nimmt sie sich besser aus, besonders im Schnee. Aber man sieht sich sehr satt an ihr. Wir alle hier oben, kannst du mir glauben, haben sie ganz unaussprechlich satt“, sagte Joachim, und sein Mund wurde von einem Ausdruck des Ekels verzogen, der übertrieben und unbeherrscht wirkte und ihn wiederum nicht gut kleidete.
„Du sprichst so sonderbar“, sagte Hans Castorp.
„Spreche ich sonderbar?“ fragte Joachim mit einer gewissen Besorgnis und wandte sich seinem Vetter zu ...
„Nein, nein, verzeih, es kam mir wohl nur einen Augenblick so vor!“ beeilte sich Hans Castorp zu sagen. Er hatte aber die Wendung „Wir hier oben“ gemeint, die Joachim schon zum dritten- oder viertenmal gebraucht hatte und die ihn auf irgendeine Weise beklemmend und seltsam anmutete.
„Unser Sanatorium liegt noch höher als der Ort, wie du siehst“, fuhr Joachim fort. „Fünfzig Meter. Im Prospekt steht ‚hundert‘, aber es sind bloß fünfzig. Am allerhöchsten liegt das Sanatorium Schatzalp dort drüben, man kann es nicht sehen. Die müssen im Winter ihre Leichen per Bobschlitten herunterbefördern, weil dann die Wege nicht fahrbar sind.“
„Ihre Leichen? Ach so! Na, höre mal!“ rief Hans Castorp. Und plötzlich geriet er ins Lachen, in ein heftiges, unbezwingliches Lachen, das seine Brust erschütterte und sein vom kühlen Wind etwas steifes Gesicht zu einer leise schmerzenden Grimasse verzog. „Auf dem Bobschlitten! Und das erzählst du mir so in aller Gemütsruhe? Du bist ja ganz zynisch geworden in diesen fünf Monaten!“
„Gar nicht zynisch“, antwortete Joachim achselzuckend. „Wieso denn? Das ist den Leichen doch einerlei ... Übrigens kann es wohl sein, daß man zynisch wird hier bei uns. Behrens selbst ist auch so ein alter Zyniker – ein famoses Huhn nebenbei, alter Korpsstudent und glänzender Operateur, wie es scheint, er wird dir gefallen. Dann ist da noch Krokowski, der Assistent – ein ganz gescheutes Etwas. Im Prospekt ist besonders auf seine Tätigkeit hingewiesen. Er treibt nämlich Seelenzergliederung mit den Patienten.“
„Was treibt er? Seelenzergliederung? Das ist ja widerlich!“ rief Hans Castorp, und nun nahm seine Heiterkeit überhand. Er war ihrer gar nicht mehr Herr, nach allem andern hatte die Seelenzergliederung es ihm vollends angetan, und er lachte so sehr, daß die Tränen ihm unter der Hand hervorliefen, mit der er, sich vorbeugend, die Augen bedeckte. Joachim lachte ebenfalls herzlich – es schien ihm wohlzutun –, und so kam es, daß die jungen Leute in großer Aufgeräumtheit aus ihrem Wagen stiegen, der sie zuletzt im Schritt, auf steiler, schleifenförmiger Anfahrt vor das Portal des Internationalen Sanatoriums Berghof getragen hatte.
Translation - English A simple young man travelled in mid-summer from Hamburg, his home city, to Davos Square in Grisons. He came to visit for three weeks.
It is, however, a long way from Hamburg thither, indeed rather too long a way for so short a visit. It is a path through lands of many lords, uphill and down, – down from the South German Plateau unto the Swabian seashore, thence by boat past sprightly tides and on through formerly impenetrable clefts.
Yet from there on the trip, generous up to then in its linearity, becomes diffuse. There come short stops and awkward circumventions. On Swiss soil, at the town of Rorschach, one is again confided to the rail, by which, however, one will reach only the little alpine station of Landquart, whereupon one is forced to change trains. A narrow-gauge railway it was, the kind where one steps on the train after wearily standing in wait in an area windy and charmless: and at the moment the machine, little but, as it would appear, inordinately powerful, sets into motion, begins the truly adventurous in the voyage, a laboured climb that seems to want an end. For Landquart Station lay still at a relatively moderate altitude, whereas now the rocky road into the mountain range announced itself in all its pomp, importunate and wild.
Hans Castorp – this the young man’s name – found himself alone with his handbag of crocodile leather, a gift from Consul Tienappel (that here this name be named as well), his uncle and guardian –, his winter coat swinging on a hanger and his plaid blanket rolled up in a small compartment upholstered in grey; he sat by a window sunk open, and as the afternoon grew increasingly cool, he had thus, youth of good family spoiled tender that he was, pulled up the collar of his summer sweater, done in silk and fashionably loose. On the bank next to him was an English paperback named Ocean Steamships, which he had studied during the beginning of his journey but now lay neglected, its cover soiled by particles of coal from the breath of the toilsome, wheezing locomotive creeping in.
Two days of travel separate a man, particularly a young man still but loosely rooted into life, from his daily world – all that he called his interests, duties, prospects, cares – far more than he could dare to dream on the penny-fare ride to the station. The space that rolls over in fugitive turns between him and the soil of his seed is attendant to forces which one were inclined to believe to be faculties solely of time; with every hour it occasions transformations very similar to those that other factor brings about – or yet in certain ways surpass them. It too serves as memory’s solvent, but its means are the unbinding of the personality from its connections to remove it to a free, original state – indeed, it turns with its manoeuvres even philistines and pedants into something like a drifter. They say that time is Lethe, foreign airs are a concoction not unlike it, and though its effect may be less complete, this it more than makes up for in its suddenness.
Such is what Hans Castorp lived through. It had not been his intention to grant any special weight to this incursion, sink his depths to it. Rather, his idea had been to quickly, perfunctorily, a thing which must be done, carry it out, very much to return the same man who had come, resuming thereupon his life precisely where he’d been compelled to cast it down. He even yesterday was hedged in the accustomed scheme of thoughts, was yet encumbered with what he had left behind – his upcoming examination –, the start of his practice at Tunder & Wilms (machine factory, boilersmiths and shipyard), was looking past the next three weeks with all the impatience that his character allowed. Yet now the present circumstances seemed to bid his full and undiluted heed, to not be something one could merely shrug off. This elevation into airs that he had never breathed, where, as he knew, uncommon, peculiarly austere and gaunt vital arrangements reigned, – this did begin to tar him with and stir in him what could be called timidity. Not only far behind did home and order lay, they lay abysmally deep below him above all, and still he clambered up. Teetering between them and the unknown, he asked himself how he would fare up there. Was it unwise, perhaps even unbearable, for him born in, conditioned by an air ensconced but a few yards above the sea, to suddenly pass over to these parts extreme, not having even spent some days in intermediate climes? He wished to be already at his destination, for once there, he thought, he would live as one does regardless of one’s residence and not have brought to mind, as was the case while still ascending, the uncanny spheres in which he found himself. He looked outside: the train bent on a narrow pass; one could see the front wagons, the machine laboriously blaring out brown, green and black masses of smoke that fluttered away. On the right rushed the waters in the deep; to the left, between boulders, rose dark spruce trees against a stone-grey sky. There came now pitch-black tunnels; upon daylight’s return, long-winding fathoms, villages in their depths, revealed themselves. They closed, were succeeded by new, narrow passes with traces of snow in their openings and crevasses. There were stops in paltry little stationhouses, terminals the train departed in the same direction whence it came – to confusing effect: one could not follow one’s direction anymore, no longer could one call the cardinal winds to witness. Imperious vistas to the mountains’ world of peaks that rose, ghostly and sacred, the world whereinto one strove on, announced themselves and vanished to the eye with the bends of the path. Hans Castorp pondered that, if he was not mistaken, he had left the broadleaf zone, and likely that of songbirds too, beneath him, and this thought of cessation and impoverishment led him, in the throes of a light nausea and malaise, to cover his eyes with his hand for two seconds – this passed. He saw the climb was over, that the saddle had been crossed. The train now rolled on on the smooth valley floor.
The time was eight, daylight endured. A grey-faced lake appeared, lined at its coasts by spruce forests blackeningly assailing the surrounding elevations, thinning in the heights and, a bare and misty rocky mass emerging in their stead, finally disappearing. There was a stop at a small station – Davos Village, Hans Castorp heard announced outside; soon he would reach his destination. And suddenly he heard Joachim Ziemsen’s voice about him, his cousin’s spacious Hamburg voice, saying “good day you, just come out”; and as he looked outside he saw Joachim himself under his window in his Ulster coat, seeming in better health than ever yet, standing bare-headed on the platform. He laughed and spoke once more:
“Just come out, don’t make a fuss!”
“But I’m not there yet”, said Hans Castorp, startled and still in his seat.
“Oh no, you’re there. This is the village. From here it’s closer to the sanatorium. I’ve brought a car, give me your things.”
And so Hans Castorp, laughing and confused in the commotion of arrival and renewed acquaintance, gave him his handbag, his winter coat, the rolled-up plaid with his cane and umbrella, finally Ocean Steamships too. He then walked through the narrow corridor and stepped onto the platform, to properly and only now to personally greet his cousin – void, as greetings are between people of cool and brittle mores, of much emotion or excitement. They had, strange as it is to say, avoided calling one another by first names from as far back as they recalled, this due solely to their shirking from too warm a bond. But since neither could comfortably call the other by his surname, they thus were both contented by the use of a familiar you. This was the standard style between the cousins.
A liveried man with a gallooned hat looked on as they – briskly and somewhat awkwardly, young Ziemsen's manner soldierly – shook hands, approaching them to bid Hans Castorp's baggage check: he was the Berghof International Sanatorium's concierge, and was disposed, while the cousins drove the carriage directly to supper, to retrieve the guest's large trunk from the station at Davos Place. The man walked with a prominent limp, which led to Hans Castorp's first question to Joachim Ziemsen:
“Is he a war veteran? Why's he limping like that?”
“Yes, thanks!” responded Joachim rather bitterly. “He has something in the knee – or had in any case, he's had his kneecap removed.”
Hans Castorp processed this as quickly as he could. “Right!” he said as, while he walked, he raised and turned his head for a stolen glance. “But you don't want to tell me that you've still got something like that? You look like you already had your porte-épée and came straight from a manoeuvre.” And he looked at his cousin from the side.
Joachim, greater than him in height and bulk, seemed fashioned for the uniform, the very image of youthful virility. Very tan in countenance, as not too seldom comes about in his blond homeland, the dark skin of his visage had been sunburnt nearly bronze. With his big black eyes and thin dark moustache over his full and shapely mouth he would have been, if not for his protruding ears, very much handsome. These ears had been, up to a certain time, the only care and pain to touch his life. He now had other worries. Hans Castorp went on:
“But now you're coming down with me? I really don't see why not.”
“Now, with you?” asked his cousin, turning to him his big eyes, which, always having been tender, had taken on a tired and sad expression these five months. “Now – when?”
“Well, in three weeks.”
“Oh right, you're probably already thinking of going back home”, answered Joachim. “Well now, just wait, you're only getting here. Of course, for us up here, three weeks are almost nothing, but for you – you're here to visit, and just for three weeks – for you, it's quite a bit of time. But first get used to the weather here, that's not so easy, not at all, you'll see. And then again, the climate's not the only unusual thing with us. Look out and you'll see a lot of new things here. And what you say about me, that's not so simple, you – ‘in three weeks home’, those really are ideas from down below. I might be tan, but that's just sunburn from the snow; like Behrens always says, it doesn't mean much, and last general examination he said it'll still be half a year, most likely.”
“Half a year? Are you mad?” Hans Castorp cried. They had just taken a seat in the yellow cabriolet, which, there on the square's stony ground, had stood in wait before the stationhouse – in fact little more than a cabin –, and as the two brown horses set in motion, Hans Castorp thrashed about on the cushion in an almost outraged irritation. “Half a year? You've already been almost half a year here! Who has that kind of time –!”
“Yeah, time”, said Joachim nodding mechanically onwards; his cousin’s sincere indignation seemed not to concern him. “Human time, they – they skip it here like you wouldn’t believe. For them, three weeks are like a day, you’ll see. You’ll learn all this”, he said. He added: “you change your ideas up here.”
And Hans Castorp looked at him, still, from the side.
“But you’ve recovered wonderfully”, he said as he shook his head.
“Yeah, you think?” was Joachim’s answer. “Isn’t that – I think so too!” he said, sitting back higher on his cushion, then immediately returning to his skewed position. “I am doing better”, he declared, “but I’m not quite healthy yet. There used to be a rattle in the upper left section, now it just sounds rough, but then the lower section’s also very rough… the second intercostal space is still making noises too.”
“You’ve really become learned”, said Hans Castorp.
“Yeah, dear God, some learning, that. I’d love to have had that drilled out of me in service by now”, responded Joachim. “But I’ve still got sputum”, he said with a both wan and lumpish shrug that did not suit him well, and, from his Ulster coat’s side pocket he had turned to him, he let his cousin take a look at something he had half pulled out and half concealed: a flat, blue glass receptacle with a tail-like curve and a metal lock. “Most of us up here have one of these”, he said. “We’ve got a name for it, a nickname, really à propos. You’re having a look around?”
So did, indeed, Hans Castorp, and he uttered: “stunning!”
“You think?” asked Joachim.
They had, for a stretch, followed the unevenly built road that ran in the direction of the valley line, parallel to the railway; they then, with a turn left, crossing the tracks, crossed, too, a stream, now trotting on a smoothly uphill path flanked on both sides by wooded slopes, thither where on a lightly prominent meadow plateau, the façade looking southwest, a building, due to its length distended in appearance, topped by a dome-roofed tower and which, resulting from the cavities the silhouettes of which its wealth of enclosed balconies sketched, seemed from afar porous and sponge-like, was just putting on the first lights: dusk was nigh. The skies, clouded in uniform patterns, had briefly been enlivened by a fallow twilight that had now been spent, and that depressed, inanimate, discoloured interregnum that presides in nature fleetingly before the night is fast enthroned held sway. The peopled valley, stretched out long, winding somewhat, was being illumined on its floor at every spot, as well as on both slopes at certain points, – on the right slope particularly, less precipitous, whereon terrace-like structures were erected. Paths ran on the left through meadowy slants and lost themselves in dull coniferous blackness. Behind, at the concluding point whither the valley narrowed down, the more faraway peaks pointed sober slate blues. A wind had made its way down, the evening chill began to gnaw.
“Well, no, I honestly don’t find it so magnificent”, said Hans Castorp. “Where’s all the firn and glaciers and enormous mountains? It doesn’t seem to me these things are even that high.”
“Oh no, they’re high”, responded Joachim. “You see the tree line almost everywhere, the border’s really quite sharp, the spruces stop, and there it all stops – like you see, it’s over, it’s rocks. Up there, to the right of the Schwarzhorn, that crest over there, you’ve even got a glacier – you still see that blue thing? It’s not big, but it is a glacier, a proper glacier – the Scaletta Glacier. In that space there, the Piz St. Michael and the Schwarzhorn – you can’t see them from here – they’re also covered in snow all year round.”
“In everlasting snow”, said Hans Castorp.
“Yeah, everlasting, if you will. But yes, that all really is high. Though we ourselves are terribly high, you’ve got to take that into account. Sixteen hundred metres above sea level. From there, you can’t get that much of a feel for the elevations.”
“Yeah, that was some climb! It was rather terrifying, let me tell you. Sixteen hundred metres! If I’m counting it right, that’s almost five thousand feet. I’ve never been so high up in my life.” And in his curiosity, Hans Castorp took a deep exploratory breath of the exotic air: it was fresh, nothing more. Void of aroma, content and humidity, it entered with ease and had nothing to say to the soul.
“Pristine!” he remarked out of courtesy.
“Well yes, the air is famous. And the conditions here aren’t favourable this evening, by the way. It comes across better sometimes, especially with snow. But you get pretty tired of it. Us up here, all of us – believe me, we’re all unconscionably tired of it”, said Joachim, his mouth contorted in a manner that seemed overwrought and lacking in control, which once again ill suited him.
“You talk so funny”, said Hans Castorp.
“Do I talk funny?” asked Joachim with a kind of concern as he turned to his cousin…
“Ha, no, forgive me, it just seemed to me like that for a moment!” Hans Castorp hurriedly remarked. It was that turn of phrase, “us up here”, which Joachim had used now for the third or fourth time and drafted unto him a somehow strange and stifling atmosphere.
Joachim went on. “Our sanatorium’s even higher than the town, as you can see. Fifty metres. The brochure says a hundred, but it’s just fifty. The Schatzalp Sanatorium over there, that’s the highest one, you can’t see it. In the Winter, you can’t drive on those paths, so they have to bring their corpses down by bobsled.”
“Their corpses? Oh, right! Well now, listen”, cried Hans Castorp. And laughter gripped him suddenly, a hefty and free-flowing laughter that shook up his chest and stroked upon his face, somewhat stiff from the chill of the wind, a silently pained grimace. “On a bobsled! And you tell me that all indifferent! You’ve really become cynical these five months.”
“Cynical? Not at all”, answered Joachim with a shrug. “I mean – why? It’s all the same to the corpses… Though yeah, it may well be the case that you become cynical up here. Behrens himself, he’s also an old cynic – and famous too, an old corps student, and a brilliant surgeon apparently; you’ll like him. Then there’s the assistant, Krokowski – really clever. They highlight his practice on the brochure. You see, he does psychoschisis on the patients.”
“He does what? Psychoschisis? Sounds horrible!” cried Hans Castorp, his vivacity now overflowing. He had entirely ceased to be its master, the psychoschisis had, after all else, quite simply been too much for him, and his laughter was such that tears ran forth below the hand he used to hide his eyes as he bent down. And Joachim – this seemed to do him well – laughed heartily as well; thus it was that the carriage, which at the last had, pacing in a steep and crawling motion, borne them to the portal of the Berghof International Sanatorium, was departed by the youths in jovial spirits.

I have native-level knowledge of Spanish, English and German (c. 8 yrs. experience translating these) as well as a reasonable proficiency with Romance languages in general (especially French). I am currently learning Turkish and hope to attain fluency in the coming year. I have considerable experience using translating and subtitling software (I currently use Trados and MemoQ for translation, and aegisub for subtitling). I have access to multiple academic research resources, a familiarity with a wide range of writing styles and tones for audiences with various cultural backgrounds, and a solid knowledge of most areas of the humanities, as well as translation/subtitling experience in e-commerce, academia and medicine, arts & entertainment, all kinds of journalism, and a number of other fields (including MTPE work and machine learning projects).
