Translation - English Quirky “Face-in-the-Hole” Panel Handmade at Observatory
A “face-in-the-hole” panel (photo stand-in panel) using the first-ever image of a black hole is gaining popularity among visitors to the National Mizusawa VLBI Astronomical Observatory located in the Mizusawa Hoshigaoka district of Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture. Six people affiliated with the observatory, including Site Director Mareki Honma, were involved with the international team that imaged the supermassive black hole. The observatory hopes to develop a wider interest in its activities.
The black hole imaging project used a total of eight radio telescopes at six locations worldwide, including sites in Chile and Antarctica. Among those from the Mizusawa observatory were Site Director Honma, also a National Observatory professor, who served as the Japanese team representative and Assistant Professor Kazuhiro Hada, who suggested using the M87 galaxy as the subject of the image. Specially-Appointed Researcher Fumie Tazaki was in charge of the software that created the image from the observed data.
The face-in-the-hole panel is 1.2 meters tall and 3 meters wide. It was installed outdoors in front of the observatory’s 23-meter-tall radio telescope on April 24, two weeks after the successful black hole image was announced on April 10. The researchers said they printed the image using a large-format printer, then glued it to a board they purchased at a home improvement store.
There is no charge to visit the panel. The observatory is closed on April 30, but is open from 9 am to 5 pm May 1-6. For more information, contact the Oshu Space and Astronomy Museum located on the observatory campus at 0197-24-2020. Exhibits explaining the black hole image and photos of the participating staff can also be viewed at this museum for an admission fee. (Kenji Izumi)
