Danish to English: New Year (poem by Tom Kristensen) General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Translation - English New Year (Tom Kristensen, tr. PH)
I’m hearing the bells of the neighborhood ring,
and I halt my thoughts, getting ready to spring.
When will the coming year come in, then?
It’s coming! But now? Or now? Or when?
I look through the window at lamps of the town
and wait for each lamp to become new again.
I wait for the new year to bring a wind blast
and to cleanse my town for a shining feast.
I feel nothing happens unseen down here.
I waited each year to see the new year.
But before I could gather my thoughts to spring,
the year all around was renewed in all things.
It started to slide, the old unseen year,
and tumbled noiselessly down nowhere.
In the depths of time it is never loud;
the new comes in silence as the old is pushed out.
And the lamps stand about in the shining air
with always a yellow, unchanging glare,
and the wind is old, and the rain down here
fell with the storm that was raging last year.
The past day started the bronze-tongued bell
ringing to bring in this day at twelve.
I keep on hearing the big bell sing
as if it were echoing last year’s ring.

Experience
Years of experience: 44. Registered at ProZ.com: Jul 2012.
I’ve been a full-time translator since the summer of 1980. Before that, I was a teacher of German, Humanities, and introductory Linguistics. I have published a few poems of my own, some humorous, in various little magazines, as well as a few translations of poems, mostly from German or Spanish, and a few articles about language learning, translation, and related topics.
I translate into English from German, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish; and also from Russian and Italian; and occasionally from other Slavic languages. I also review the work of other translators.
My hobbies include humor (laughing at other people’s humor, and attempting, often unsuccessfully, to make other people laugh); and obsessing over the weather and my health.
