Source text - English MIDI Sequencing
MIDI technology is used in a wide variety of contexts, including computer notation, computer-assisted instruction, and multimedia authoring. One of most important applications for MIDI in a creative context is MIDI sequencing. “Sequencing” in the general sense involves organizing objects or information in some kind of order. A sequence of driving directions involves organizing a group of instructions in general time order: first turn left, then drive 5 miles, and finally turn right. DNA sequencing involves examining DNA components
(A, G, C, T) and putting the symbols in a row that represents the spatial organization of the components. MIDI sequencing involves organizing MIDI messages―note messages, program messages, expressive messages, and system messages―in time.
The purpose of MIDI sequencing is to create performances on hardware or software synthesizers and samplers. Creating nuanced performances on a synth requires careful attention not only to notes and rhythms, but also to expressive characteristics such as dynamics and vibrato. The art of MIDI sequencing involves taking the raw materials of MIDI―the messages―and using them to create the subtle expressive changes that live performers execute naturally.
The term “MIDI sequencer” is misleading nowadays in the sense that few, if any, sequencers deal only with MIDI. Most allow the user to combine MIDI, digital audio, software synthesis and sampling, and digital video in a single software environment, though the video is seldom editable within the sequencer. The term digital audio workstation (DAW), which was used in the “Audio section of this book, is equally misleading in that only a few DAWs deal only with digital audio. In practice, the terms “sequencer” and “DAW” are often used interchangeably, with “sequencer” more likely to be used in the context of composing/arranging music and “DAW” more likely to be used in the context of audio recording and editing.
The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the MIDI features that can be found in most standard sequencer/DAWs. Fortunately, most sequencers operate in a similar manner, so once you learn, changing to another is largely a matter of learning new menus, buttons, and key commands for already familiar functions.
MIDI sequencing involves inputting MIDI messages, organizing and editing MIDI messages, and outputting MIDI messages, all discussed in detail below. However, it is useful to first look at the user interface features common to most sequencers.
THE STANDARD USER INTERFACE
Multi-track Audio Recording Paradigm
The standard interface for MIDI sequencing is derived from multi-track audio recording. Multi-track audio recording, of course, involves recording audio from different instruments on separate tracks so that they can be edited and processed separately and later mixed together. MIDI sequencers organize MIDI messages on separate tracks, with the output of each track assigned to a monotimbral instrument or a MIDI channel on a multitimbral instrument, and a patch (see below) chosen for that instrument or channel. Tracks and channels are not one and the same. The output of one track can be usually assigned to multiple MIDI channels and/or multiple tracks can be assigned to the same channel. Tracks can be thought of as purely organizational elements, allowing you to store and edit various MIDI messages and then output them to a monotimbral synth or one or more MIDI channels on a multitimbral synth.
Also by analogy with audio recording, each MIDI track typically has a record-enable button, a mute button and a solo button. Those features will be covered later when MIDI playback is discussed. Though this interface paradigm originated when sequencers were MIDI only, it is particularly convenient now that MIDI and digital audio regularly coexist in the same piece of software and even in the same window.
Another sequencer interface feature that was derived from audio recording practice comprises the transport controls, consisting of play, stop, pause, rewind, fast-forward, and record. Transport controls were also covered in Chapter 6 when discussing digital audio recording.
Patchlists
As mentioned above, tracks are assigned to monotimbral instruments or MIDI channels on multitimbral instruments, and patches are then assigned to those outputs. For software synthesizers it is common to choose the patch directly from the softsynth´s window instead of from the sequencer track. For hardware synths, it´s possible to set the patches for each channel on the synthesizer itself, but it is often more convenient to choose patches in the sequencer by name from a pop-up menu. However, as you saw in Chapter 9, “MIDI messages,” program (patch) change messages and bank change messages specify patches by number, not by name.
The mapping between a patch name chosen in a sequencer and bank change/patch change numbers that are sent to a synthesizer is handled by a patchlist. A patchlist is a file on the computer that contain a list of patches by name on a synthesizer and the bank change and program change numbers that are associated with those patches. When you choose a patch in a sequencer, the sequencer looks up the proper bank and program numbers and sends those to the synthesizer.
Different sequencers often have different ways of formatting patchlists and different ways of making those lists available to the sequencer. You can often find any patchlists that are not automatically installed with your sequencer by searching the Internet, or you can make them with a text editor or a special piece of software for making patchlists (there are several freeware/shareware patchlist makers available).
Measuring Time
Another important feature of the common sequencer interface is the method for measuring time. When a sequencer is being used to compose or arrange, the preferred time format involves measures and beats. In addition, some system is needed for subdividing beats so that note values smaller than a quarter note can be represented. Some sequencers divide the beat directly into some number of “ticks,” also referred to as “units” by some sequencers. This division is referred to as the PPQN, or parts per quarter note. PPQN varies from sequencer to sequencer and can usually be changed by the user.
One possible PPQN is 480. This means that a quarter note would get 480 ticks, and eighth note 240 ticks, a sixteenth note 120 ticks, and so on. Many sequencers can be set to have a PPQN in the thousands. This may seem like an inhumanly precise measurement of time, but it allows the MIDI messages to be aligned precisely with both audio and video events.
Another variation of this measurement in musical time is to first subdivide the beat into sixteenth notes and then divide those sixteenth notes into some number of ticks. If the number of ticks per sixteenth note were 240, it would be equivalent to a PPQN of 960.
As you saw in Chapter 6, “Digital Audio Software,” sequencer/DAWs can display time in a variety of other ways as well, including real time for recording projects and SMPTE time code for synchronizing with digital video.
Displaying Pitch
The pitch in a MIDI note message is transmitted as a numerical value (the key number), but it is displayed in various windows in a MIDI sequencer in pitch-register notation. In many MIDI applications and MIDI devices, middle C (key number 60) is represented as C3, as opposed to the C4 that is the standard in other areas of music and acoustics. The register numbers change at the Cs: a half step below C3 is B2 and an octave above C3 is C4.
MIDI Editors
The term editor in a sequencing program refers to a particular view of the MIDI information. You´ve already seen one of the standard MIDI editors, the tracks editor, also called the arrange window or the project window. The tracks editor is useful for manipulating one or more tracks of a sequence on the timescale of a measure or more. You don´t typically edit notes themselves in this view, though some sequencers allow you to zoom in from the tracks view and edit individual notes.
Aside from providing a “birds-eye” view of your sequence, the tracks editor is also typically where you specify the output instrument or MIDI channel(s) on a multitimbral instrument for a track and assign a patch to that instrument or channel. In addition, you can set the track to be record-enabled and control playback functions such as mute and solo. Many of these settings can also be selected in other editors.
To edit MIDI messages more precisely, there are a variety of common “note-level” editors that show each note in a track or in multiple tracks. Most sequencers have a similar set of editors, though a given sequencer may have an additional editor that is unique or only one or two of the standard editors. It is important to note that the editors all access the same MIDI messages: if you change a note in one editor, it will change in all of the other editors that display note information as well.
The choice of which editor to use depends on the editing tasks that you wish to perform. Often, any one of two or three editors would serve your purposes just fine, in which case the choice of editors becomes one of personal preference.
One of the most common note-level editors is the piano roll editor, also referred to as the graphic editor or the key editor. The piano roll editor shows MIDI notes as horizontal bars whose height represents pitch and whose length represents duration. Piano roll editors may also show controllers and other MIDI messages as well.
Another common note-level editor is the list editor, which displays MIDI information as a list of messages. This editor is the most precise editor in that every MIDI message has its own line and each piece of information in the message can be changed individually. The list editor is one of the best editors for troubleshooting a sequence that isn´t behaving as you expect, because all messages are clearly displayed.
A drum editor is similar to a graphic editor, but it specializes in collecting together notes that represent drum kit elements and displaying them in such a way that drum patterns become clear.
A notation editor allows you to see information in standard music notation. For many musicians new to sequencing this is the preferred note editor because it takes advantage of years of musical training. A notation editor is an excellent view for seeing and editing pitch, but usually a poor view for rhythm. Traditional notation in a sequencer works best when information falls on a time grid of quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes. However, because sequencers are primarily designed to produce performances on electronic instruments, it is seldom desirable to have all of the musical events happen perfectly on a grid. A good groove may require that, say, the snare drum on the second and fourth beats of a measure be a little late, or that the downbeat be slightly anticipated by the horns. This makes performance sense, but not notation sense―the last thing you want to see in notation is a bunch of 128th-note rests and dotted 64th notes.
To accommodate the distinction between performance and notation, most notation editors quantize the events in time―force them to line up with a grid line―in order to display acceptable-looking notation (see “Transpose, Quantize and Humanize” below). You can usually choose the level of quantization, such as to the nearest sixteenth note or to the nearest eighth note. The MIDI messages will still be played back with the un-quantized timing, and the other editing views will display the un-quantized timing, so that the notation editor is the only view that doesn´t show the actual timing of the MIDI events.
Notation editors in sequencers have become quite sophisticated in recent years, such that they can display such notation elements as dynamics and articulations. However, sequencers specialize in performance, suggesting that high-quality computer notation will still be carried out in a separate program for the time being.
The mixer window in a sequencer is somewhat different from the other editors. The previous editors show MIDI messages organized in time. A mixer window provides a graphical representation of volume, pan, and a few other settings only for the time currently shown on the sequencer´s clock.
The strength of the mixer window is that it provides you with an intuitive interface for entering volume and pan information. In addition to a slider to control volume and a knob or slider to control pan, a mixer window usually provides you with a way of capturing the movements of these sliders and knobs in real time while the sequence is playing. After capturing these movements, the faders and knobs move automatically while the sequence plays back. As a result, the volume and pan messages when viewed this way are referred to as automation.
As mentioned above, many of these editors display the same information, just in different ways. Notes are displayed in the piano roll, list, and notation editors. Controller information can be seen in the piano roll and list editors and in the mixer window. Which editor is chosen for a particular task is typically a matter of personal preference, though it is a good idea for you to attempt to accomplish tasks in multiple views to experience the advantages and drawbacks of each.
MIDI INPUT
There are variety of ways to input MIDI messages into a sequencer, including real-time entry, step-time entry, and manual entry. In addition, there are a number of entry modes that affect what happens to existing data or where in time the recording takes place.
Real-time entry
Real-time entry involves playing live to a metronome while the sequencer is recording, often with a one- or two- bar countoff before the recording starts. Of course, you don´t have to line up to the beat at all; you could turn off the click and countoff and play freely while the sequencer records. It won´t look “right” according to the bar-beats-ticks grid, but the sequencer will happily record the information and play it back. Some sequencers have a feature that allows you to align the grid to notes that you have recorded without a click by tapping a key along on the keyboard as the sequencer plays back. This would allow you to record with rubato and still line up other parts to it later. This will be discussed under “Tempo Changes” later in the chapter.
Real-time entry can also be used with other MIDI messages besides just note messages. For example, you may want to add pitch bend or vibrato with the mod wheel to a passage you´ve sequenced. Both of those message types are associated with either wheels or a joystick on a keyboard and can be performed live either while you´re playing the notes or after the notes have been entered using overdub mode (see “Entry Modes” below). In addition, any other knob or slider on a keyboard or controller that sends MIDI messages can also be recorded in real time in the same way.
The advantage to real-time entry is that it allows you be expressive in your playing style in terms of articulations and timing (swing or some other groove). Since sequencing is most concerned with what is heard―the performance―this is a very important feature. The drawback to real-time entry is that every wrong note or misplayed rhythm is also recorded along with your expressive performance. Fortunately, you can edit the pitches and timing in one of the editors or apply one of the “corrective” functions discussed below in “MIDI Editing” to clean up the performance.
Step entry
Step entry involves selecting the pitch and the duration separately so that the notes are put in step by step. To step enter notes, you choose the duration using a letter or a number on the computer keyboard and play the pitch on a MIDI keyboard.
Because you are not actually performing the music while entering it, you need to be conscious of the desired performance results during and after step entry. For example, notes with articulations that affect the note duration, such as staccatos, are step-entered by modifying the selected duration of the note. Passages that are entered with step entry can sound overly precise and often require further editing to create an effective performance.
Manual entry
Manual entry involves inputting data using a virtual tool such as a “pencil” tool. While this method of entry is occasionally useful for adding in a note or two, it is most widely used to enter automation information such as pan, volume, mod wheel, and pitch bend. Typically a pencil tool will have a parameter that specifies what data is being entered and the type of line that is to be entered, such as straight, curved, or freehand. The piano roll editor and the drum editor are typically editors for manual entry. Additionally, a drum editor may have a manual entry tool that works with patterns of notes rather than single notes.
Entry Modes
For both real-time entry and step entry, there are several different modes that determine how existing information in the target track is handled. The simplest of these is replace mode. In this mode, old information is deleted when new MIDI messages are being recorded. Various sequencers have different names for these modes, but they work in a similar way. In overdub or merge mode, the new information is merged with the existing information. “Overdub” in this instance means nearly the opposite of what it means in audio recording. In audio recording, overdubbing refers to one performer recording on more than one track, such as a guitarist recording a rhythm track and then overdubbing a solo on another track. In sequencing, overdubbing refers to recording more than one pass on the same track, so you might first record the left hand of the piano and then overdub (merge) the right hand of the piano on that same track. “Merge” is probably the better term, but “overdub” is also commonly used.
Punch-in/punch-out mode is also derived from audio recording, and its MIDI implementation is closer to the audio implementation than overdub. Punch-in/punch-out allows you to specify which part of a track can be recorded on and which can´t. To use this mode, you define two points in time: a punch-in point and a pounch-out point. Before the punch-in point, nothing can be recorded, even if the track is record-enable and you´ve pressed the record button in the transport controls, and after the punch-out point nothing can be recorded. Between the punch points anything goes. Punch-in/punch-out can be utilized either in replace mode or in overdub (merge) mode with the part of the track between the punch points being the only location affected by those modes.
Loop mode allows you to specify a range of measures (or portions of a measure) that will repeat continuously while you´re recording. This is different from looping part of a track for playback, which will be discussed below. By itself, loop mode could be used to record, say, a solo over and over until you get it just right. Some sequencers allow each pass to be stored as a separate “take” so that you can choose the best take later.
Loop mode is particularly useful when combined with ovedub/merge, which allows you to add elements to a track on each pass. For example, this would allow you to build up a complex drum pattern. On the first recording pass you might play the bass drum and the snare drum, during the second pass you might play the hi-hat and crash cymbals, and during the third recording pass you might add drum fills and other miscellaneous percussion. Loop mode can also be useful during editing, when you want the sequencer to repeat the same portion of the song while you make edits.
MIDI EDITING
Once MIDI messages have been entered into a sequencer, you can edit them to create the performance that you desire. There are many different editors and editing functions that you can use to manipulate MIDI messages. Each of these allows you to edit either the components of the MIDI messages, such as the key number and velocity in note messages, the organization of these messages in time, or both.
Cut, Copy, and Paste
To operate on the data, you must first select it. The typical selection strategies are available in sequencers just as they are in other programs such as word processors: click once to select, shift-click to select more than one item, and drag-enclose to select a group of items or all items in a certain time range. The editing functions cut, copy, and paste are also available, though there are more graphically oriented ways of accomplishing these same tasks, such as dragging selected messages for cut-and-paste and dragging selected items with a modifier key pressed, such as option or alt, for copy-and-paste.
In a time-based program such as a sequencer, there are typically some extensions to the cut, copy, and paste paradigm. For example, a normal cut or delete command will get rid of the selected messages, but the time that they occupied is still there, leaving a gap in the sequence. A different version of cut, called snip by some sequencers, removes both the messages and the time that was selected thereby closing the gap. Just as snip is an extension of cut, splice is an extension of paste, in which the previously cut or copied messages push the existing messages later in time. If the regular paste function is used, time is not inserted in the track along with notes.
With a regular paste, the merge versus replace issue discussed under “Entry Modes” becomes important. “Paste” could mean replace the existing messages with the pasted messages or merge the pasted messages with the existing messages on the track. Some programs rename the paste function to reflect either replace or merge and add another editing function to take care of the other mode.
When dragging selected messages it is often useful to constrain dragging to either the vertical direction―changing pitch when dragging notes―or the horizontal direction―changing position in time. This is usually accomplished by dragging the selected items with the shift key held down. In addition, it is often useful to limit horizontal position changes to only multiples of a selected musical duration. For example, if you´re moving a group of notes from one beat to the next, you might want to set the edit grid to a quarter note, so that the notes will only move in multiples of quarter notes. You can turn the grid on or off to meet your editing needs.
Transpose, Quantize and Humanize
The pitch and timing of groups of MIDI messages can be modified by a variety of editing functions, including transpose, quantize, and humanize. MIDI note messages can be transposed by interval quite easily by simply adding a number of semitones to each key number. You can also make more complex pitch changes, such as changing the mode from major to minor or combining the transposition by interval and mode change to transpose a sequence from, say, C major to G harmonic minor.
The reason why pitch changes in MIDI are so straightforward is that, unlike digital audio, the pitch (key number) is directly encoded into the MIDI note message. In fact, it is possible to have the sequencer create an analysis of the selected notes and identify their tonic and mode, though few sequencers have such features.
The timing of MIDI messages can be altered in a variety of ways, such as shifting all selected messages early or later in time, creating a backward version (retrograde) of selected messages, or by quantizing the selection. Quantizing involves automatically “correcting” the timing of MIDI messages that were entered in real time by moving selected messages to the nearest time point on a specific grid. If you play a downbeat a little late, you can use the quantize function with the grid size set to a quarter note to “snap” that note to the downbeat. This function is related to the constrained grid dragging discussed above.
You have to be careful when quantizing a real-time performance, because you can easily eliminate the expressive characteristics you were trying to obtain by recording in real time. In fact, one sequencer refers to this strict form of quantizing as over-quantizing. Most quantize functions have one or more parameters that allow you to decide the strength of the quantization, which means that you can cause selected notes to move toward a grid point, but not all the way to a grid point. Other parameters allow you to focus the quantization on notes near beats and ignore notes that lie in between and vice versa.
A variant on quantization is input quantize. With input quantize active, the correction of the notes to the grid happens while the notes are being entered. This can save some time, but is not very flexible since the variations in timing in the performance are eliminated before the MIDI messages are being recorded.
In addition to quantizing to a regular grid, it is possible to quantize to an uneven grid to create effects like shuffle or swing. Swing quantize takes notes of a specified value (usually eighth notes) and delays the second note to create the characteristic uneven eighth notes of swing. Other quantize patterns are possible as well, and can be combined with velocity patterns to create groove quantize, in which the note timings are shifted in a pattern throughout a measure(s) and the velocities of the notes are changed to create different emphases than the original messages.
Quantize can be applied destructively or non-destructively. In destructive quantizing, the original placement of the notes is lost and only the quantized version remains. On the other hand, non-destructive quantize changes the timing and velocity only while the song is playing back and leaves the notes in their original locations. This allows for a great deal of experimentation over time with the proper quantize settings. Non-destructive quantize settings are usually track-wide settings since the function no longer applies to just a selected group of notes.
Some sequencers have a feature that is the opposite of the quantize function: humanize. Where quantize is used to “correct” MIDI messages that were input in real time, humanize can be used to selectively “mess up” MIDI messages that were entered through step entry. For example, some sequencers use the same velocity value for all step-entered notes. This kind of precision can sound machine-like and can be disturbing when machine-like is not the desired aesthetic.
To correct the constant velocities, humanize can change the velocities of selected notes by varying them randomly within a certain range. This function could be applied to a group of notes that all have a velocity of 80 by giving them random variations in velocity of +/-5, so the resultant velocities would be somewhere between 75 and 85. Similarly, the timing of step-entered notes can be varied randomly within certain limits to remove the mechanical sensation of inhuman precision.
There are many more editing functions that allow you to move MIDI messages in time, such as shift and retrograde, or change message components, such as setting velocity and scaling control values. Each sequencer will have its own “spin” on these functions, so it is useful when you are first learning a sequencer to experiment with the functions that are available, as they are the tools that allow you to shape the electronic performance of your music.
MIDI OUTPUT
At its simplest level, MIDI output involves rewinding a sequence back to the beginning and pressing play in the transport controls Other common playback features include the ability to mute and solo tracks and to change tempo.
Mute and Solo
When sequencing, it is often useful to either silence a few tracks or to hear only a few parts. Silencing a part or parts is referred to as muting. This is usually a straightforward process and involves clicking on a button labeled “M” or clicking on a “play-enable” icon to turn it off. When you prefer to hear only one or a few parts, it is cumbersome to mute all of the other parts, so you would use the complementary solo function. Soloing is usually a matter of clicking a button labeled “S” on a track or enabling the solo function generally and then choosing which tracks to solo. Ironically, you can “solo” more than one part at a time. Regular use of mute and solo can improve the efficiency of creating and editing a complicated sequence.
Tempo Changes
Tempo can be static for the entire sequence, set by entering a number into a tempo field, or can be changed dynamically by using a special tempo track. In addition to traditional expressive uses, tempo changes can be used to align the bars and beats of the sequence with the bars and beats of an audio track or with specific events in digital video.
There is an inherent bias in sequencers toward strict tempos: it´s difficult to perform a natural rubato when the metronome click is hammering away at a steady tempo. Rubato can be added to a strict-tempo performance afterward by changing the tempo track, but it can be difficult to achieve a natural result. In most sequencers, you can record MIDI in real time without the metronome and afterward adjust the bars and beats to the rubato tempo.
Many sequencers allow you to “tap” in the the tempo while the sequence is playing back or drag the beats or barlines to match up with the performance. These tempo changes now form a tempo map of the rubato passage. Once the changing tempo of the sequence matches the performance, other MIDI parts can be sequenced using the metronome click that now follows these tempo changes.
The same techniques can be used to match bars and beats to audio files that have been imported into a sequence. It is simple to match the tempo of an audio file that contains only fixed-tempo material, but if the tempo of the audio material varies, the tap tempo and/or drag bars and beats techniques could be used.
Video is somewhat different in that you only rarely want downbeats or accents in the music to line up with video events. Otherwise, you are said to be “mickey-mousing” the video. The first step in creating a video tempo map is to place markers in the sequence at time locations that match events of interest in the video. The sequencer can then calculate a tempo that will make a certain number of measures fit in that time or find a tempo that generally matches the markers.
MIDI THRU AND LOCAL CONTROL
When you connect a keyboard synth or controller to a computer and begin recording on a sequencer track, you want the notes that you play in the keyboard to sound like the patch you´ve chosen for the track. For this to happen, the sequencer must route the MIDI messages generated by your keyboard to the output device for the selected sequencer track.
When the output is a software instrument, the MIDI messages are passed to the software synth internally. When the output is a hardware synth, the messages are routed to the MIDI output of the computer. The process of taking in MIDI messages and routing them to an internal software synth or an external hardware synth is referred to as MIDI Thru (not to be confused with the Thru port on a synth). The MIDI Thru function is used by a variety of programs, including sequencers and notation software.
If you´re sequencing using a software synth―meaning that it both generates MIDI messages from its keys and converts incoming MIDI messages into sound―you have to be concerned over the keyboard synthesizer´s Local Control setting. When you purchase a keyboard synthesizer, plug it in, and turn it on, it will generate sound when you play the keys. This happens because there is a direct connection between the keys and the ”sound engine”―the part of the synth that converts MIDI messages into sound. This direct connection is referred to as the Local Control and, in this case, the Local Control is “on.”
If you connect this synth to a computer running a sequencer and record-enable a track whose output is a channel on the same synth, then the synth will receive two note-on messages for each key that you play. One note-on message will come directly from the key via the Local Control. The second note-on message will come from the sequencer via MIDI Thru. Depending on the output channel setting on the sequencer track, the two note-on messages may be on two different channels, resulting in two different patches being heard for every key that is played. This can be distracting if, for example, you´re trying to sequence drums, but you´re also hearing a piano patch due to the Local Control.

La tecnología MIDI se utiliza dentro de una gran variedad de ámbitos, incluyendo la codificación digital, la enseñanza asistida por ordenador y la creación multimedia. Una de las aplicaciones de MIDI más importantes dentro del ámbito creativo es la secuenciación MIDI. La “secuenciación”, en el sentido amplio de la palabra, consiste en la organización de objetos o de información en un orden establecido. Una secuencia de indicaciones a un conductor consiste en la organización de una serie de instrucciones en un orden temporal: primero gire a la izquierda, después continúe recto durante cinco kilómetros y, finalmente, gire a la derecha. La secuenciación del ADN se basa en la observación de los componentes del ADN (A, G, C, T) y en la colocación de los símbolos en una fila que representa la organización espacial de los componentes. La secuenciación MIDI consiste en organizar mensajes MIDI — mensajes de nota, mensajes de programa, mensajes de expresión y mensajes de sistema — en el tiempo.
El propósito de la secuenciación MIDI es la creación de eventos musicales con sintetizadores hardware y software, y con samplers. La creación de interpretaciones matizadas en un sintetizador requiere una atención cuidadosa, no solamente a las notas y a los ritmos, sino también a características expresivas como la dinámica y el vibrato. El arte de la secuenciación MIDI consiste en extraer la materia bruta MIDI, es decir, los mensajes, y usarla para crear los cambios sutiles de expresión que los ejecutantes realizan de manera natural al tocar.
El término “secuenciador MIDI” no es totalmente preciso en la actualidad, ya que son escasos, si es queda alguno, los secuenciadores que manejan solamente MIDI. La mayoría permiten al usuario combinar MIDI, audio digital, síntesis software y sampling, además de vídeo digital (aunque éste normalmente no se puede editar con un secuenciador), en un único entorno software. El término DAW (acrónimo del inglés “Digital Audio Workstation”, es traducido como “estación de trabajo de audio digital”), que fue utilizado en la sección de este libro dedicada a “Audio”, resulta también confuso, ya que sólo algunos DAW manejan exclusivamente audio digital. En la práctica, los términos “secuenciador” y “DAW” se utilizan a menudo de manera intercambiable: “secuenciador” se emplea normalmente en el ámbito de la composición/arreglo de música, y “DAW” en el ámbito de la grabación y edición de audio.
El objetivo de este capítulo es ofrecer una visión general de las características MIDI que pueden encontrarse en la mayoría de los secuenciadores/DAW estándar. Afortunadamente, la mayoría de los secuenciadores operan de forma similar, de manera que, una vez que se ha aprendido a utilizar un secuenciador, cambiar a otro consiste mayormente en aprender los nuevos menús, botones y comandos de las funciones ya conocidas.
La secuenciación MIDI consiste en introducir, organizar y editar, y extraer mensajes MIDI, todos los cuales serán descritos en detalle más adelante. Sin embargo, es conveniente observar primero las características de la interfaz de usuario, comunes a la mayoría de los secuenciadores.
LA INTERFAZ DE USUARIO ESTÁNDAR
Paradigma de la grabación multipista de audio
La interfaz estándar para la secuenciación MIDI tiene su origen en la grabación multipista de audio. La grabación multipista de audio consiste, naturalmente, en la grabación de audio de diferentes instrumentos en pistas separadas, para que éstas puedan editarse y procesarse por separado y mezclarse después. Los secuenciadores MIDI organizan los mensajes MIDI en pistas separadas, de modo que la salida de cada pista queda asignada a un instrumento monotímbrico, y un patch (ver más abajo) seleccionado para ese instrumento o canal. Las pistas y los canales no son lo mismo. La salida de una pista puede ser asignada por lo general a múltiples canales MIDI y/o múltiples pistas pueden ser asignadas al mismo canal. Las pistas pueden considerarse elementos puramente organizativos que permiten almacenar y editar diversos mensajes MIDI para luego conectarlos por una salida a un sintetizador monotímbrico, o a uno o varios canales de un sintetizador multitímbrico.
Además, por analogía con la grabación de audio, cada pista MIDI dispone generalmente de los botones “Activar grabación”, “Silenciar” y “Solo”. Veremos estas características más adelante al tratar sobre la reproducción MIDI. Aunque este paradigma de la interfaz se originó cuando los secuenciadores eran sólo MIDI, resulta especialmente conveniente ahora que el MIDI y el audio digital coexisten con frecuencia en un mismo programa e incluso en una misma ventana del programa.
Otra característica de la interfaz del secuenciador que proviene de los procedimientos de grabación de audio es la utilización de controles de transporte: reproducción, parada, pausa, retroceso, avance rápido y grabación. Trataremos sobre los controles de transporte en el capítulo 6, cuando hablemos de la grabación de audio digital.
Listas de patches
Como dijimos antes, las pistas se asignan a instrumentos monotímbricos o a canales MIDI de instrumentos multitímbricos, y después se asignan patches (instrumentos predefinidos) a esas salidas. Con los sintetizadores software, es habitual seleccionar un patch desde la ventana del programa directamente, en lugar de hacerlo desde la pista del secuenciador. Con los sintetizadores hardware es posible establecer los patches para cada canal en el propio sintetizador, pero a menudo resulta más conveniente elegirlos por su nombre en el secuenciador, desde el menú local. Sin embargo, como vimos en el capítulo 9, “Mensajes MIDI”, los mensajes de cambio de programa (patch) y los mensajes de cambio de banco especifican los patches mediante números en lugar de nombres.
Una lista de patches realiza la correspondencia entre el nombre de un patch elegido en el secuenciador y los números de cambio de banco/cambio de patch que se envían al sintetizador. Una lista de patches es un archivo en el ordenador que contiene los patches clasificados por su nombre en un sintetizador, y los números de cambio de banco y cambio de programa asociados a esos patches. Al escoger un patch en un secuenciador, éste busca los números de banco y de programa correspondientes y los envía al sintetizador.
Los distintos secuenciadores suelen tener diferentes formatos de listas de patches, y varían en la forma en que el secuenciador puede acceder a ellas. Se pueden encontrar en Internet normalmente aquellas listas de patches que el secuenciador no instala automáticamente, o si no se pueden crear listas con un editor de texto o con un programa específico (hay varios disponibles en versión freeware/shareware).
Medición del tiempo
Otra característica importante de la interfaz común de un secuenciador es el método para medir el tiempo. Cuando se utiliza un secuenciador para componer o hacer arreglos, el formato de división del tiempo preferible consiste en compases y tiempos. Además, se requiere un sistema que subdivida los tiempos, de manera que se puedan representar los valores de notas menores que una negra. Algunos secuenciadores dividen un tiempo en un número de “ticks” (también llamados “pulsos” por algunos secuenciadores). A esta división del tiempo se le denomina PPQN (pulsos por negra). El PPQN varía entre los diferentes secuenciadores y puede ser modificado normalmente por el usuario.
Una resolución posible sería de 480 PPQN, lo que significaría que una negra estaría dividida en 480 pulsos, una corchea en 240 pulsos, una semicorchea en 120 pulsos, etcétera. Muchos secuenciadores se pueden ajustar a un PPQN de miles. Aunque esto pueda parecer una precisión inhumana del tiempo, permite que los mensajes MIDI sean alineados de manera precisa con eventos tanto de audio como de vídeo.
Otra variación de esta medición del tiempo musical es la subdivisión, en primer lugar, de cada tiempo en semicorcheas, para luego dividir a su vez esas semicorcheas en un cierto número de pulsos. Si el número de pulsos por cada semicorchea es de 240, esto equivale a una resolución de 960 PPQN.
Como vimos en el capítulo 6, “Software de audio digital”, los secuenciadores/DAW pueden mostrar el tiempo de otras maneras, como puede ser el tiempo real para proyectos de grabación y el código de tiempo SMPTE para la sincronización con vídeo digital.
Visualización del tono
En un mensaje de nota MIDI, el tono se transmite como un valor numérico (número de tecla), pero se puede visualizar como notación de registro en varias ventanas en un secuenciador MIDI. En muchas aplicaciones y aparatos MIDI, el Do central (tecla número 60) se representa como “C3”, a diferencia del “C4” que es estándar en otras áreas de la música y la acústica. Los números de registro cambian en el Do o “C”: un semitono por debajo de “C3” está “B2”, y una octava por encima de “C3” está “C4”.
Editores MIDI
En un programa de secuenciación, el término editor se refiere a una visión particular de la información MIDI. Ya hemos visto uno de los editores MIDI estándar, el editor de pistas, también denominado ventana de arreglos o ventana de proyecto. El editor de pistas resulta útil para manipular una o más pistas de una secuencia en una escala de tiempo de un compás o más. Normalmente no se editan las notas en sí en esta vista, aunque algunos secuenciadores permiten utilizar el zoom para aumentar y editar notas individuales desde esta vista.
Aparte de proporcionar una visión amplia de nuestra secuencia, el editor de pistas es donde generalmente se especifica el instrumento de salida ― o el canal(es) en un instrumento multitímbrico ― de una pista, y se asigna un sonido a un instrumento o canal. Además, se puede activar la grabación en la pista y controlar funciones de reproducción como el silenciado y el solo. Muchos de estos ajustes pueden seleccionarse también en otros editores.
Para editar mensajes MIDI de manera más precisa, existen diversos editores comunes a “nivel de notas” que muestran cada nota en una pista o en múltiples pistas. La mayoría de los secuenciadores tiene una serie similar de editores, aunque algún secuenciador en particular puede tener un editor adicional que es único, o sólo uno o dos de los editores habituales. Es importante resaltar que todos los editores acceden a los mismos mensajes MIDI: si se cambia una nota en un editor, ésta cambiará a su vez en todos los otros editores que también muestran información sobre las notas.
La elección del editor a utilizar depende de las tareas de edición que se deseen llevar a cabo. Generalmente, la mayoría de los editores podrán realizar la misma tarea, en cuyo caso la elección de editor es un asunto de preferencia personal.
Uno de los editores más comunes a nivel de notas es el editor de teclado, también llamado editor gráfico. El editor de teclado muestra las notas MIDI como barras horizontales, cuya altura representa el tono, y cuya longitud representa la duración. En los editores de teclado pueden aparecer también controladores y otros mensajes MIDI.
Otro editor común a nivel de notas es el editor de lista de eventos, que muestra información MIDI como una lista de mensajes. Este editor es el más preciso en cuanto a que cada mensaje MIDI se ubica en una sola línea y cada parte de la información sobre el mensaje puede modificarse individualmente. El editor de listas de eventos es uno de los mejores editores cuando se trata de la resolución de problemas en una secuencia que no nos satisface, ya que todos los mensajes se muestran claramente.
El editor de percusión es similar al editor gráfico, pero su función especializada es la de reunir notas que representan elementos de percusión, y mostrarlos de tal manera que los patrones de percusión se puedan ver claramente.
El editor de partituras permite ver la información como notación musical estándar. Muchos músicos noveles en la secuenciación prefieren este editor de notas, ya que les permite utilizar los conocimientos obtenidos durante años de formación. El editor de partituras es excelente para ver y editar el tono, pero es una vista menos apropiada para el ritmo. La notación tradicional en un secuenciador funciona mejor cuando se trata de información que encaja en una cuadrícula de tiempo de negras, corcheas y semicorcheas. Sin embargo, como lo secuenciadores están diseñados fundamentalmente para producir ejecuciones hechas con instrumentos electrónicos, no es deseable, por lo general, que los eventos musicales sucedan de manera cuadriculada. La creación de un buen ritmo puede requerir, por ejemplo, que la caja se retrase un poco en el segundo y cuarto tiempo de un compás, o que el primer tiempo comience ligeramente antes con un sonido de corneta. Esto dota de sentido a la ejecución, pero no a la notación, ya que lo último que se desea ver en una partitura es un sinfín de silencios de cuartifusa y semifusas con puntillo.
Para adaptar la ejecución a las características de la notación, la mayoría de los editores de partituras cuantizan los eventos en el tiempo: hacen que éstos se alineen con una línea de la cuadrícula, para así poder mostrar una notación de aspecto aceptable (véase más adelante “Transposición, Cuantización y Humanización”.) Normalmente se puede elegir el nivel de cuantización, de forma que se ajuste, por ejemplo, a la corchea o semicorchea más próxima. Los mensajes MIDI seguirán siendo reproducidos con el ritmo sin cuantizar, y las otras vistas de edición mostrarán también el ritmo sin cuantizar, de manera que el editor de partituras es la única vista que no muestra el ritmo real de los eventos MIDI.
Los editores de partituras se han vuelto bastante sofisticados estos últimos años, de tal manera que pueden mostrar elementos de notación tales como la dinámica y la articulación. Sin embargo, los secuenciadores están más enfocados hacia la interpretación y, por lo tanto, hasta este momento se siguen combinando con otros programas que proporcionan una notación de mayor calidad.
La ventana de mezclas de un secuenciador se diferencia algo de los otros editores. Mientras los editores vistos anteriormente muestran los mensajes MIDI organizados en el tiempo, la ventana de mezclas ofrece una representación gráfica del volumen, de la panorámica y de otros parámetros sólo en el tiempo real que muestra el reloj del secuenciador.
La ventaja que ofrece la ventana de mezclas es que proporciona una interfaz intuitiva con la que introducir información del volumen y de la panorámica. La ventana de mezclas, además de contar con un control deslizante para el volumen y de un botón o control deslizante para la panorámica, facilita la captura en tiempo real de los movimientos realizados con estos controles durante la reproducción de la secuencia. Después de haber captado esos movimientos, los controles deslizantes y los botones se mueven automáticamente mientras se reproduce la secuencia. Por consiguiente, al referirse a los mensajes de volumen y de panorámica vistos de esta forma, se habla de automatización.
Como mencionamos anteriormente, muchos de estos editores muestran la misma información, sólo que de formas distintas. Las notas se muestran en el editor de teclado, en el editor de lista de eventos y en el editor de partituras. La información sobre los controles se puede ver en el editor de teclado, en el editor de lista de eventos y en la ventana de mezclas. La elección de un editor para llevar a cabo una tarea concreta es una cuestión de preferencias, aunque es recomendable intentar realizar tareas en múltiples vistas para darse cuenta de las ventajas e inconvenientes de cada uno de los editores.
GRABACIÓN DE MENSAJES MIDI
Existen distintos métodos de introducción de mensajes MIDI en un secuenciador: en tiempo real, por pasos o manual. Además, hay varios modos de entrada que determinan lo que ocurre con los datos ya existentes o el lugar en el tiempo en que se efectúa la grabación.
Grabación en tiempo real
La grabación en tiempo real consiste en grabar un pasaje en el secuenciador al ritmo del metrónomo, precediendo normalmente la grabación un período de cuenta atrás de uno o dos compases. Por supuesto, no hay por qué llevar el ritmo marcado; se puede silenciar el sonido y desactivar la cuenta atrás del metrónomo, para tocar libremente mientras el secuenciador está grabando. Aunque esto no resulte adecuado con respecto a la rejilla de edición — dividida en compases, tiempos y pulsos —, el secuenciador grabará y reproducirá la información sin problema. Algunos secuenciadores cuentan con una función que permite alinear la rejilla de edición con las notas grabadas anteriormente sin necesidad de usar el ratón, sino el teclado, pulsando una tecla mientras se reproduce la secuencia. Esto permite grabar con rubato, pudiendo alinear otras partes con la rejilla de edición más tarde. Esto lo veremos más adelante en este capítulo cuando lleguemos a “Cambios de tempo”.
La grabación en tiempo real puede realizarse no sólo con mensajes de nota, sino también con otros mensajes MIDI; por ejemplo, si se quiere añadir a un pasaje secuenciado un efecto de inflexión de tono o vibrato con la rueda de modulación. Estos dos tipos de mensaje se controlan por medio de ruedas o de una palanca en el teclado, y se pueden manejar al mismo tiempo que se tocan las notas o después de que la notas hayan sido grabadas, usando el modo de superposición (véase más adelante en “Modos de grabación”). Cualquier otro botón o control deslizante de un teclado o de un controlador que envíe mensajes MIDI puede también ser grabado en tiempo real de la misma manera.
La ventaja que ofrece la grabación en tiempo real es que permite la expresividad del estilo interpretativo (swing o algún otro estilo), en cuanto a la articulación y el ritmo. Esta función es muy importante, ya que la secuenciación está orientada principalmente hacia lo que se va a escuchar, la interpretación. El inconveniente de la grabación en tiempo real es que cada nota fallida o ritmo mal ejecutado quedan grabados junto con la expresividad de la interpretación. Afortunadamente, se pueden editar los tonos y los ritmos en uno de los editores, o emplear una de las funciones “correctoras”, que veremos más adelante en “Edición MIDI”, para eliminar los errores de la interpretación.
Grabación por pasos
La grabación por pasos consiste en introducir las notas paso a paso, seleccionando el tono y la duración por separado. Para introducir de este modo las notas, se elige la duración utilizando una letra o un número del teclado del ordenador, y el tono se ejecuta en un teclado MIDI.
Al no estar realmente interpretando la música, hay que ser conscientes, durante y después del proceso, de las cualidades interpretativas que se desean conseguir. Por ejemplo, para añadir a las notas articulaciones que afecten a su duración, como el staccato, se modifica la duración de la nota según se requiera. En el caso del staccato, esto significaría reducir la duración de la nota. Los pasajes que se han grabado mediante el método de introducción por pasos pueden sonar demasiado precisos y suelen requerir posterior edición para conseguir el resultado deseado.
Grabación manual
La grabación manual consiste en la introducción de datos mediante una herramienta virtual, como la herramienta “lapicero”. Aunque este método de grabación es útil a veces para añadir una nota o dos, se usa sobre todo para introducir información como la panorámica, el volumen, la modulación y la inflexión de tono. Normalmente, la herramienta lapicero llevará asociado un parámetro que especifique el tipo de datos y de línea (recta, curva o a mano alzada) que se van a introducir. Los editores que más se utilizan habitualmente para la grabación manual son el de teclado y el de percusión. Además, el editor de percusión puede contar con una herramienta que introduce patrones de notas en lugar de notas individuales.
Modos de grabación
Hay varios modos diferentes para determinar, tanto en la grabación en tiempo real como en la grabación por pasos, la manera en que se va a manejar la información preexistente en la pista donde vamos a grabar. El modo más sencillo es el modo de sustitución, en el cual, al introducir nuevos mensajes MIDI, la información anterior se borra. Los distintos secuenciadores se refieren a estos modos de diversas formas, aunque todos funcionan de manera parecida.
En el modo de superposición o fusión, la nueva información se fusiona con la ya existente. En la grabación MIDI, “superposición” significa prácticamente lo contrario que en la grabación de audio, en cuyo caso se refiere a la grabación que hace un mismo intérprete en más de una pista: por ejemplo, cuando un intérprete graba una guitarra rítmica en una pista, para superponer después un solo de guitarra grabado en otra pista. En la secuenciación, superponer es grabar más de un pase en la misma pista, de manera que se podría grabar primero la mano izquierda del piano y después superponer (fusionar) la mano derecha en esa misma pista. Probablemente, “fusión” es el término más adecuado, pero “superposición” se usa comúnmente también.
La grabación entre localizadores tiene su origen también en la grabación de audio pero, a diferencia de la superposición, su implementación en la grabación MIDI está más relacionada con su equivalente en el ámbito del audio. Este modo permite especificar en qué parte de la pista se puede grabar y en cuál no. Para usar este modo, se definen dos puntos en el tiempo: los localizadores de entrada y de salida. Antes del localizador de entrada, no se puede grabar nada, incluso si la pista está activada para la grabación y se ha presionado en la barra de transporte el botón para grabar. Tampoco se puede grabar nada después del localizador de salida, pero entre los dos puntos se puede grabar tanto en modo de sustitución como en modo de superposición (fusión). La única parte de la pista a la que estos dos modos afectan es la que se encuentra entre los dos localizadores.
El modo cíclico permite escoger una región específica (un número de compases o de partes de compases) que se repite continuamente mientras se está grabando. Esto no es lo mismo que el modo cíclico en la reproducción, que se verá más adelante. El modo cíclico se utiliza, por ejemplo, para grabar un solo varias veces consecutivas, hasta que se consiga el resultado deseado. Algunos secuenciadores ofrecen la posibilidad de guardar cada pase como una “toma” distinta, con lo cual se puede elegir después la que se prefiera.
El modo cíclico resulta útil sobre todo cuando se combina con la superposición/fusión, ya que esto permite añadir elementos a una pista en cada pase. Por ejemplo, a la hora de crear un patrón de percusión complejo, se podría tocar el bombo y la caja en primer lugar, el charles y el plato crash en un segundo pase y, en un tercer pase, añadir redobles y otros elementos de percusión. El modo cíclico también puede ser de utilidad durante la edición, ya que el secuenciador puede repetir continuamente un segmento de la canción en el que se deseen hacer modificaciones.
EDICION DE MENSAJES MIDI
Una vez que se han introducido los mensajes MIDI en un secuenciador, se pueden editar para conseguir la interpretación deseada. Existen diversos editores y funciones de edición con los que se manipulan los mensajes MIDI. Cada uno de ellos permite tanto editar los componentes de los mensajes MIDI — por ejemplo, el número de tecla y la velocidad en los mensajes de nota —, como organizar estos mensajes en el tiempo, o ambas cosas.
Cortar, copiar y pegar
Para efectuar cualquier operación con unos datos, primeramente hay que seleccionarlos. Los secuenciadores disponen de las técnicas de selección habituales en otros programas, como los procesadores de texto: hacer clic con el botón izquierdo del ratón una vez para seleccionar, hacer clic con el botón izquierdo mientras la tecla de mayúsculas se mantiene pulsada para seleccionar varios elementos, y arrastrar el ratón abarcando una zona para seleccionar un grupo de elementos o todos ellos en una región de tiempo determinada. También existen las funciones de edición cortar, copiar, y pegar, aunque hay maneras más gráficas de realizar las mismas tareas, como el arrastre de elementos seleccionados, para cortar y pegar, y el arrastre de elementos seleccionados con una tecla de modificación (opción o alt) pulsada, para copiar y pegar.
En un programa basado en el tiempo, como es un secuenciador, las operaciones habituales de cortar, copiar y pegar conllevan otros aspectos. Así, por ejemplo, comandos típicos, como cortar o borrar, eliminan los mensajes seleccionados, pero el tiempo que ocupaban seguirá ahí, dejando un espacio en la secuencia. Una versión diferente de la operación de cortar, a la que algunos secuenciadores denominan recortar, elimina los mensajes y el tiempo seleccionado a la vez, y de esta manera el espacio no queda vacío. De la misma forma que recortar es una extensión de cortar, dividir es una extensión de pegar, por la cual los mensajes que han sido previamente cortados o copiados transportan los mensajes existentes hacia delante en el tiempo. Si se emplea la función habitual de pegar, no se inserta en la pista el tiempo junto con las notas.
Cuando se trata de la función habitual de pegar, resulta importante la cuestión que tratamos en “Modos de grabación”, sobre la elección del modo de sustitución o de fusión. “Pegar” puede significar sustituir los mensajes existentes por los que se están pegando, o fusionar los mensajes que se están pegando con los ya existentes en la pista. Algunos programas dan otro nombre a la función de pegar, refiriéndose a uno de esos dos modos, bien a sustituir, bien a fusionar, y añaden una nueva función de edición que realiza el otro modo.
En muchas ocasiones se hace necesario, cuando se arrastran los mensajes seleccionados, limitar el arrastre a la dirección vertical — que varía el tono cuando se arrastran las notas — o a la dirección horizontal, que varía su posición en el tiempo. Normalmente esto se puede conseguir arrastrando los elementos seleccionados mientras se mantiene pulsada la tecla de mayúsculas. Además, suele resultar útil limitar los cambios de posición horizontal a únicamente múltiplos de la duración musical seleccionada. Por ejemplo, cuando se mueve un grupo de notas de un tiempo al siguiente, puede ser conveniente ajustar la rejilla de edición a una negra, con lo cual las notas sólo se moverán a múltiplos de negra. La rejilla puede activarse o desactivarse según requiera la edición.
Transponer, cuantizar y humanizar
Se puede modificar el tono y el tiempo de grupos de mensajes MIDI con varias funciones de edición, que comprenden la transposición, la cuantización y la humanización. Los mensajes de nota MIDI se pueden transponer por intervalos con bastante facilidad, añadiendo simplemente un número de semitonos a cada número de nota. También se pueden realizar cambios de tono más complejos, como cambiar el modo de mayor a menor, o combinando la transposición por intervalo con el cambio de modo para transponer una secuencia, por ejemplo, de Do Mayor a Sol Menor armónico.
La razón por la que es tan sencillo realizar cambios de tono en MIDI, a diferencia de lo que ocurre en el audio digital, es que el tono (número de nota) viene ya codificado en el mensaje de nota MIDI. De hecho, es posible que un secuenciador analice las notas seleccionadas e identifique su tónica y su modo, aunque ésta es una característica que ofrecen pocos secuenciadores.
En los mensajes MIDI, el tiempo puede ser alterado de diversas formas: desplazando todos los mensajes seleccionados hacia delante o hacia atrás en el tiempo, creando una versión hacia atrás (retrógrada) de los mensajes seleccionados, o cuantizando la selección. La cuantización consiste en la “corrección” automática del tiempo en los mensajes MIDI introducidos en tiempo real, moviendo los mensajes seleccionados al punto en el tiempo que se encuentre más cerca en una rejilla específica. Por ejemplo, si la nota del primer tiempo se toca con algo de retraso, se puede utilizar la función de cuantización para “ajustar” su posición de manera que quede correctamente situada en la rejilla, cuya división en negras habrá sido previamente definida. Esta función está relacionada con lo visto anteriormente sobre la limitación del arrastre por la rejilla de los mensajes seleccionados.
Hay que tener cuidado al cuantizar una interpretación grabada en tiempo real, ya que se pueden eliminar fácilmente las características de expresividad que se pretendían obtener al grabar en tiempo real. De hecho, un secuenciador se refiere a esta forma estricta de cuantización como sobrecuantización. La mayoría de las funciones de cuantización cuentan con uno o varios parámetros que posibilitan la elección del nivel de cuantización, lo cual significa que las notas seleccionadas pueden desplazarse hacia un punto en la rejilla, pero sin llegar hasta ese preciso punto. Otros parámetros permiten aplicar la cuantización a las notas que se encuentran cerca de los tiempos, haciendo caso omiso de las notas que se hallan en puntos intermedios, y viceversa.
Una variante de la cuantización es la cuantización de entrada. Cuando se activa la cuantización de entrada, el ajuste de las notas a la rejilla ocurre según se van introduciendo éstas. Esta función permite ahorrar tiempo, pero no es muy flexible, ya que las variaciones de tiempo en la interpretación se eliminan antes incluso de haberse grabado los mensajes MIDI.
Además de cuantizar conforme a una rejilla normal, es posible cuantizar de acuerdo a una rejilla irregular para crear efectos tales como shuffle o swing. La cuantización swing toma notas de un valor específico (normalmente corcheas) y retrasa la segunda nota para crear las características corcheas irregulares del swing. También hay otros patrones de cuantización posibles que, combinados con patrones de velocidad, resultan en la cuantización groove, en la cual se modifica, de acuerdo a un patrón, la ubicación de las notas a lo largo de uno o varios compases. También se altera la velocidad de las notas para crear énfasis distintos a los mensajes originales.
Se puede aplicar la cuantización de manera destructiva o no destructiva. En la cuantización destructiva, la ubicación original de las notas se pierde y sólo queda la versión cuantizada. Por otro lado, en la cuantización no destructiva los cambios de ubicación y velocidad de las notas sólo se aplican durante la reproducción, manteniendo éstas sus emplazamientos originales. Aplicando los ajustes de cuantización adecuados, existe un amplio margen para la experimentación con el tiempo. Los ajustes de cuantización no destructiva afectan normalmente a toda una pista, puesto que la función ya no se aplica solamente a un grupo de notas seleccionadas.
Algunos secuenciadores ofrecen una función opuesta a la cuantización: la humanización. Si la cuantización se emplea para “corregir” mensajes MIDI grabados en tiempo real, la humanización sirve para “desorganizar” de manera selectiva mensajes introducidos mediante la grabación por pasos. Por ejemplo, algunos secuenciadores utilizan el mismo valor de velocidad para todas la notas introducidas de esta manera. Esta clase de precisión lleva a crear un sonido de máquina que, si no se busca como efecto estético, puede resultar desagradable.
Para corregir esta uniformidad de las velocidades de las notas, la humanización realiza cambios en la velocidad de ciertas notas seleccionadas, modificándolas de manera aleatoria dentro de unos límites preestablecidos. Esta función se puede aplicar, por ejemplo, a un grupo de notas con una misma velocidad de 80, variando de manera aleatoria sus valores con un margen de +/-5, de manera que los valores de las velocidades resultantes estarían entre 75 y 85. De forma parecida, se puede cambiar de manera aleatoria, dentro de unos límites determinados, la ubicación de las notas grabadas por pasos para eliminar la sensación mecánica de una precisión inhumana.
Hay otras múltiples funciones de edición, tales como el desplazamiento o el movimiento retrógrado, que permiten trasladar mensajes MIDI en el tiempo. Otras funciones, como los ajustes de velocidad y la gradación de los valores de los controles, realizan cambios en los componentes de los mensajes. Cada secuenciador tiene un enfoque diferente hacia estas funciones. Por tanto, al aprender el funcionamiento de un secuenciador, es conveniente experimentar con las funciones disponibles, ya que son las herramientas que permiten dar forma a la interpretación electrónica de la música.
SALIDA DE MENSAJES MIDI
La salida de mensajes MIDI, en su nivel más elemental, consiste en retroceder al principio de la secuencia y pulsar el botón de reproducción de los controles de transporte. Otras funciones de la reproducción son las que permiten silenciar o hacer que suene sólo una pista, y cambiar el tempo.
Silenciado y solo
Cuando estamos secuenciando, muchas veces resulta conveniente silenciar varias pistas, o oír solamente algunas partes. La función de silenciado permite que una o varias partes no suenen. Este proceso suele ser sencillo, consistiendo su activación en pulsar un botón con la letra “M” o, si se quiere desactivar la función, haciendo clic en el icono de “activar la grabación”. Cuando se quiere oír solamente una o varias partes, es más rápido utilizar la función complementaria, el solo, que silenciar todas las otras partes. La función de solo se activa pulsando el botón con la letra “S” de la pista, o activando la función general de solo, para después escoger las pistas sobre las que se quiere aplicar. Irónicamente, se puede activar la función de solo en varias partes a la vez. Por medio del uso habitual de las funciones de silenciado y solo, se puede aumentar la eficacia en la creación y edición de una secuencia complicada.
Cambios de tempo
Se puede mantener un mismo tempo durante la totalidad de una secuencia, ajustándolo mediante la inserción de un valor en el campo del tempo, o también se pueden introducir cambios dinámicos, empleando para ello una pista de tempo aparte. Los cambios de tempo se utilizan habitualmente para aportar expresividad, pero pueden usarse además para alinear los compases y los tiempos de una secuencia con los de una pista de audio, o con eventos específicos del vídeo digital.
Los secuenciadores tienen una tendencia inherente hacia los tempos precisos: es difícil ejecutar un rubato natural mientras se oye el tictac monótono del metrónomo. Se puede añadir posteriormente rubato a una ejecución con un tempo estricto, editándolo en la pista de tempo, pero es difícil conseguir así una interpretación natural. En la mayor parte de los secuenciadores, se puede grabar MIDI en tiempo real sin metrónomo, y adaptar más tarde los compases y tiempos al tempo rubato.
En muchos secuenciadores se puede “marcar” el tempo mientras se está reproduciendo la secuencia, o desplazar los tiempos y las líneas divisorias, para que concuerden con la interpretación. Estas modificaciones del tempo formarían un mapa de tempo del rubato en un pasaje. Una vez que los cambios de tempo en la secuencia se hayan sincronizado con la ejecución, se pueden secuenciar otras partes con el metrónomo, ya ajustado para seguir esos cambios de tempo.
Se pueden utilizar las mismas técnicas para hacer coincidir los compases y tiempos de una secuencia con los archivos de audio que hayan sido importados. Sincronizar el tempo de un archivo de audio es algo sencillo, siempre que sea un tempo fijo, pero si el tempo del material audio varía, se pueden emplear las técnicas vistas anteriormente (marcado del tempo y desplazamiento de compases y tiempos).
La diferencia con el vídeo reside en que raramente se busca deliberadamente que los primeros tiempos del compás o los acentos de la música coincidan con eventos de vídeo (se conoce como “mickey-mousing” la búsqueda intencional de este efecto). Para crear un mapa de tempo, el primer paso consiste en emplazar marcadores en la secuencia que coincidan en el tiempo con los eventos de video que queramos sincronizar. El secuenciador puede así calcular el tempo que hará que un cierto número de compases encaje en ese tiempo, o puede encontrar un tempo que se ajuste de manera general a los marcadores.
MIDI THRU Y CONTROL LOCAL
Cuando se conecta un teclado sintetizador o un controlador a un ordenador y se comienza a grabar en una pista de un secuenciador, queremos que las notas ejecutadas en el teclado tengan el sonido del patch elegido para esa pista. Para que esto ocurra, el secuenciador tienen que enviar los mensajes MIDI generados en el teclado al dispositivo de salida de la pista seleccionada en el secuenciador.
Cuando la salida va hacia un instrumento software, los mensajes MIDI se envían al sintetizador software internamente. Cuando la salida se conecta con un sintetizador hardware, los mensajes se dirigen a la salida MIDI del ordenador. El proceso de leer los mensajes MIDI y enviarlos a un sintetizador software interno o a un sintetizador hardware externo se llama MIDI THRU (que no se debe confundir con el puerto THRU de un sintetizador). Diversas aplicaciones emplean la función MIDI THRU, incluyendo secuenciadores y programas de notación.
Cuando se utiliza un teclado sintetizador para secuenciar — lo que significa que el sintetizador genera los mensajes MIDI que vienen de las teclas, a la vez que convierte en sonido los mensajes MIDI entrantes — hay que tener en cuenta los ajustes del control local del mismo. Cuando compramos un teclado sintetizador, y lo enchufamos y encendemos, generaremos sonido al tocar las teclas. Esto sucede porque hay una conexión directa entre las teclas y el “generador de sonido”, esto es, la parte del sintetizador que convierte los mensajes MIDI en sonido. Esta conexión directa se llama control local y, en este caso, el control local habrá sido activado.
Si se conecta ese sintetizador a un ordenador que ejecuta un programa secuenciador, y se activa para la grabación una pista cuya salida está dirigida a ese mismo sintetizador, éste recibirá dos mensajes de nota activada por cada tecla que se toque. Un mensaje de nota activada llegará directamente, a través del control local, desde la tecla. El segundo mensaje de nota activada se habrá enviado, vía MIDI THRU, desde el secuenciador. Dependiendo del canal de salida asignado en la pista del secuenciador, los dos mensajes de nota activada pueden encontrarse en canales distintos, lo que significa que se podrían oír dos patches diferentes por cada tecla que se tocase. Supondría una molestia el que, a causa del control local, al tratar de secuenciar la percusión se estuviera oyendo un patch de piano a la vez.
Para evitar este problema, hay que desactivar el control local del teclado sintetizador, de manera que el generador de sonido reciba solamente mensajes desde el secuenciador vía MIDI THRU. Cuando vamos a secuenciar con un teclado sintetizador, la opción adecuada es la desactivación del control local. Cuando se trata de un módulo hardware o de fuentes de sonido puramente virtuales, el asunto del control local no reviste importancia.
