Source text - English 3.1. Introduction: Geological location of the Basque-Cantabrian Basin
The northern limit of the Basque-Cantabrian Basin forms part of the southern continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay. This region is a geological unit of the Iberian Peninsula, belonging to the Alpine cycle (see Figure 1, in the Preface and Figures 3.1 and 3.4a, for details). The boundaries of this basin are: the Asturian Massif, to the west; the Duero and Ebro Tertiary Basins and the Demanda Massif, to the south; and the Palaeozoic Basque Massifs, to the east. Therefore, from a geological perspective, the Basque-Cantabrian Basin includes the Cantabrian continental margin situated between Saint Jean de Luz, in France and the east of Cantabria. The Cap Breton Canyon can be considered then as its northern boundary.
The basin has been deformed tectonically and is being nourished with sediments originating from erosion of the adjacent margins.
3.2. Morphology
The Bay of Biscay is located between Spain and France, as part of the Atlantic Ocean (Figure 3.1). Below a water depth of 4,500 m, there is an abyssal plain; this constitutes the ‘real’ oceanic section of the bay. Here, some submarine mountains rise, often aligned in an east-west direction; their summits can reach 2,000 m above the surrounding abyssal plains. This morphology is a consequence of the deep structure of the Bay, providing evidence of the volcanic activity concurrent with the opening of the Bay of Biscay. Likewise, deformation of the crust that occurred when the Iberian and European plates converged, early in the Cenozoic (Boillot et al., 1984). Bordering this abyssal plain, to the south, appears the Basque continental shelf, located within the eastern section of the northern Iberian Peninsula shelf. This shelf is the most complex of the three shelves bordering the Bay of Biscay: the Armorican shelf (platform); the Aquitaine Basin shelf; and the Northern Iberian Peninsula shelf (Figure 3.1).
The Cantabrian continental shelf is characterised by its narrowness. In the Basque Country, it ranges from 7 km in front of the Matxitxako Cape, to 20 km in front of Orio (Uriarte, 1998); this can be compared to the neighbouring shelf of Aquitaine, which rangesfrom 60 to over 200 km. The orientation of the Cantabrian shelf is approximately similar to
that of the coastline; it is straight, but appears fractured. Beyond 200 m water depth is a steep slope (10 to 30%), with submarine canyons. The latter lie often obliquely to the shelf edge, i.e. Cap Breton, Lastres, Avilés, Llanes, etc.

La costa norte de la cuenca cantábrica vasca pertenece a la plataforma continental sur del Golfo de Vizcaya. Esta región es una unidad geológica dentro de la península Ibérica que pertenece al ciclo Alpino (ver Figura 1 del prefacio y Figuras 3.1 y 3.4 para más detalle). Esta cuenca limita al oeste con el macizo asturiano, al sur con las cuencas terciarias del Duero y el Ebro y la Sierra de la Demanda y al este con los macizos paleozoicos vascos. Por eso teniendo en cuenta esta perspectiva geológica la cuenca cantábrica vasca se extiendería desde la margen continental localizada en la ciudad francesa de San Juan de Luz hasta el este de Cantabria. La frontera norte se puede situar en el cañón de Cap Bretón. La deformación tectónica y la sedimentación procedente de la erosión de las márgenes adyacentes constituyen dos elementos caracterizadores de esta cuenca.
3.2. Morfología
El Golfo de Vizcaya se encuentra situado en el océano Atlántico entre España y Francia. Con sus más de 4.500m de profundidad la fosa abisal traza la sección “real” del golfo.En este lugar se alzan montañas submarinas que suelen estar alineadas de este a oeste y cuyas cumbres pueden llegar a alcanzar los 2.000 metros por encima de la fosa abisal que las rodea. Su morfología viene dada por la profundidad del golfo y es la evidencia de que existió actividad volcánica en la formación del Golfo de Vizcaya. Del mismo modo, al converger las placas ibérica y europea a principios del cenozoico se produjo una deformación de la corteza (Boillot et al., 1984). Bordeando esta fosa abisal por el sur, aparece la plataforma continental vasca que se encuentra al nordeste de la Península Ibérica.
Ésta es la más compleja de las tres plataformas que rodean el Golfo de Vizcaya, a saber, la plataforma Armónica, la cuenca de Aquitania y la plataforma norte de la Península Ibérica (Figura 3.1).
La estrechez de esta plataforma continental es una peculiaridad de la zona vasca. En el territorio del País Vasco oscila entre los 7km frente al cabo Matxitxako y los 20km a la altura de Orio (Uriarte, 1998), cifras bastante diferentes a las de la plataforma de la vecina Aquitania que van desde 60km hasta 200km. La orientación de la plataforma cantábrica es muy similar a la de la costa, por lo general recta, aunque a veces presenta cortes que rompen la regularidad de la línea. Por debajo de los 200m de profundidad se observan cañones submarinos de pronunciadas pendientes (entre un 10 y un 30%). Suelen discurrir oblicuos al borde de la plataforma. Tal es el caso de los cañones de Cap Bretón, Lastres, Avilés y Llanes entre otros.

A smooth field, soft-edge illumination is produced using a new radial lenticular homogenizing lens system that provides a signature look on stage. In addition, the dedicated wash light includes a user changeable fixed color wheel, a variable CTO, a full CMY color mixing system, and the ability to produce an 11-degree fixed hard-edge profile with fast color change and Electronic Strobe. The profile can be rapidly zoomed from 11 to 33 degrees.
More than just a washlight, SHOWBEAM 2.5 offers users a revolutionary patent pending effect, the Twin Beam. In this effect, two discrete hard-edge beams exit the fixture on command, with variable control over the Twin Beam deviation and rotation speed — all with little brightness degradation. Users may vary the Twin Beam by adding incremental color using the CMY color mixing system.
SHOWBEAM 2.5 also includes the renowned LED tracking system that encircles the lens, a feature that debuted with its SHOWGUN predecessor. Users may choose to use the LED tracking system alone or as a complementary ring of color to their set.
