Hi all -

I am translating a medical report on an elderly patient with multiple infirmities.

In the section on clinical history there is the following description (hundreds of words string together, all in caps, few commas):

HEMORRAGIA DIGESTIVA INFERIOR ADENOMA PROSTÁTICO BENÍÑGÑO HIPERTENSIÓN ARTERIAL ENFERMEDAD CORONARIA HIPOTIROIDISMO SUBJETIVO ASINTOMÁTICO EXAMEN FISICO

Subjectivo is usually an adjective! However can I safely take it here to mean "subject"?

They're saying "hypothyroidism is "subjectively asymptomatic", though that's redundant. Sometimes you'll see it as "sin subjetivo de hipotiroidismo" or something like that, which literally means "no symptoms of hypothyroidism".

Thanks! It took me a while to realize the obvious. The SOAP acronym is perfect. I think my confusion reading your explanation centered around the fact that SUBJETIVO needed to be on its own line, hence part of the Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan sequence.

So it is probably not related to the word hypothyroidism here.

Thank you so much for the SOAP acronym! My document follows that schema. However I still don't understand how "subjetivo" is operating in this sentence. In other words I have the same question that Joseph Tein is raising, i.e., "asymptomatic subjective hypothyroidism"?

In medicine, subjective findings refer to symptoms. This is usually charted right before the objective findings, those found by the physician on physical examination. These are the first two items of the famous SOAP note. SOAP refers to Subjective, Objective, Assessment (i.e., the diagnosis) and Plan (the treatment plan).

Incidentally, you'll see the same SOAP acronym used in Spanish language charts as well, especially from Mexico.
