I'm translating an article about the need for turning some lands into national parks, and I came along this sentence: "La fundación X busca convertir esos paños de terreno en un parque nacional". I guess "paños de terreno" means plots of land or something of the sort, but I'm really not sure.

Yes, plot of land seems right. If you Google image search the term, you get lots of images of plots of land from aerial photography.

Yes, you're right, or you may want to qualify and say "small plot...". The last link refers to a plot of land for an appropriate purpose, so I think "plot of land" will suffice. Perhaps the choice of wording in this case is because you have agricultural lands now being turned into a national park.
