Discussion

Caroline Clarke Sep 15, 2009:
how do we make a vacuum??? in order to make a vacuum tube there must be a way to remove all gases etc from the tube, so it does in fact make sense that there be a gas extractor or similar.
Giovanni Rengifo Sep 15, 2009:
CLARIFICATION What is this device actually used for?

disagree Jennifer Levey : If it's a 'vacuum tube', how come is contains 'gas'?

gas extractor in vacuum/evacuation tube/tubing

i'm afraid it's very difficult to be sure of anything with so little CONTEXT. please also see my discussion comment. ta
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jennifer Levey : It doesn't 'extract' gas - as explained in my wiki webref the rare metal extracted from Asker's precious ore reacts with the gas in the tube to form a solid substance.

i'm glad you have previous context to go by. i have been trying to help answer this query based on the information provided here by the asker, so obviously have much less context than you. i'm glad you have previous context and therefore can actually help

vacuum tube getter

Clarification:
The primary purpose of a getter in vacuum tubes is actually not to reduce or maintain the vacuum but rather to remove heavy positive gas ions from the space between the tube's electrodes; these ions travel in the opposite direction to the electrons (which constitute the wanted electric current) and end up hitting the tube's cathode causing irreparable damage to the cathode surface after a period of time.
