My daughter received a nesting doll from her grandfather after a trip. He purchased this doll abroad from a russian man at a flea market. these words are painted at the base of this doll and we are just tring to figure out if its her name or what? We also would like to know how to pronounce these words. Any assistance you could give us is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Christ has Risen
Obviously purchased from an old man, who held this doll dear to him and mean't a great deal to him. Obviously due to the poverty in Russia, he needed to part with it and therefore sold it to your grandfather. A treasured and very valued gift. Pronunciation - 'Xristos Voskres' - X is pronounced like you are gargling but with a sore throat, and the sound comes from the back of the throat.

Christ Resurrected
I assume the doll was of religious character, because what is written on the bottom looks like "Khristos Voskrese" written in old church Russian. This is the first half of the Easter greeting - "Christ Resturrected - Resurrected Indeed!"

Pronounced "Khristos Voskreseh"
Sounds like the nesting doll (in Russian they are called "Matrioshka") was made by a Russian orthodox believer (and it is a part of the traditional Easter greeting, as suggested).
These dolls are mostly machine-made these days, but if you happen to have one carved by hand, it could be quite valuable.

Christ is risen
Response: "He is risen indeed". A much more beautiful Easter greeting than our "Happy Easter!"

Christ is risen
almost certainly "Christ is risen". the third letter of the first word should be an "и"; the first letter of the second word is probably a "v" ("в" in Russian) which has been mistaken for "k".

Christ Is Risen
Orthodox/Russian Easter this year is on April 30. It is a Russian tradition to exchange painted eggs and, with the words 'Xristos voskres' (Christ is Risen), kiss each other on both cheeks.
