: There's a nuance to 'претендовать'. It can mean both 'aspire out of sheer ambition' (cf. прет-т на должность) and 'to demand as one's due (cf. претендент на престол). The original phrase uses the former, while 'to lay claim' gravitates towards the latter

: Clamour может использоваться только с бюджетниками, которые "кусок пирога" именно что выпрашивают. Squabble вообще не той стилистики - это как бабы на базаре ругаются. У vie/fight etc есть коннотация, что они промеж собой соревнуются, а не с мейнстримом.
