: Upwall would mean at the top of the wall. Here, the term means on the lake side of the dam, i.e., literally upstream//As a keen runner myself, does it mean that running uphill is "amonte"? :)

Multumesc! As I - albeit a keen swimmer - had surmised without a clear idea of the parament, there is nothing wet about the scenario. Otherwise, 9 times out of 10 in French at least, en amont means 'upline' or input and en aval 'downline' or output.

Here is some additional context: "În cazul zidurilor de sprijin la evaluarea presiunii pământului se va ţine seama şi de următoarele aspecte:
- forma geometrică a paramentului amonte al zidului (linie frântă de exemplu)".
Also, this text refers to retaining walls used in excavations, therefore pressure is exercised by soil, and not water. Would you say that "upstream" still applies?
