The murals are also imbued with many elements of courtly provenance. The
grand scene of dedication on the southern wall (Fig. 5) with the paintings’
founder Wierzbięta of Palowic, Greater Poland Starost, accompanied by his
spouse and two daughter, presenting his gift in the form of a chapel model
to St James the Apostle, yet actually offering it to the Cistercians shown on
the other side, places this foundation with its rare formula in the convent
tradition reaching the founding of the Abbey in the late 12th century by the
Duke of Greater Poland Mieszko III.
