Thanks. Krzysztof Łesyk: Great rendition.

Humbird: I think you're right. This whole translation has been screwy like that.
humbird Mar 18, 2008:
I do not think the word 犯罪 is appropriate translation (sure it was once an Italian), especially in his time. I don't think he ever said それでも地球は回っている。That was an erroreneous quote. Probably this one too.

I don't know of any source of Galileo quotations, but just for reference, here's my (rough) translation of this one: "Speaking nonsense is no more than a simple error, but holding one's tongue while knowing the truth? That's a crime"
Idaho (asker) Mar 18, 2008:
Yes. The client says this is a famous quotation, and they want the English. I haven't been able to match it up.

Also, to be frank, I'm a little hazy on exactly what it means from にすぎない to the period.

what do you mean? do you mean like to translate it in English?

Expressing a mistaken idea, is just an error; but shutting one's mouth having realized about what is certainly true, is a crime.

Uttering a falsehood is simply an error, but knowing that and keeping silent about it is a sin.

The original quote was in Italian. There is no authentic English translation. The target term has a character limit. Here is a more complete translation:

Uttering a falsehood is simply an error, but knowing that it is an error and keeping silent, that is a sin.
