Japanese term

実学の精神

Japanese to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Have a rough (very rough) idea of what they are trying to say, but am looking for the right phrase.

From the following website:
https://www.keio.ac.jp/ja/about/philosophy/

From sentence:
福澤がいう実学はすぐに役立つ学問ではなく、「科学(サイヤンス)」を指します。実証的に真理を解明し問題を解決していく科学的な姿勢が義塾伝統の「実学の精神」です。

Applied Sciences

I defer to Cinefil-san for confirming and clarifying the term and its origin.
Now, as Keio U' states in its mission statement, the term does refer to a truly scientific approach to finding "solutions to real-life problems".
Using "practical knowledge" for it would include too much and not enough at the same time. "knowledge' covers too much ground (from the advanced to the trivial) and says nothing about the standard by which it has become established: rational proof? or empirical rule of thumb adopted over time for its obvious usefulness. so, rendering 実学 has to include the notion of 'scientific' method,IMHO.
"Applied Sciences" would fit the bill even though, due to the lesser status this term carries in cultures with a fetish for 'stratospheric' intellectual pursuits, combining this phrase with 'The Spirit of' jars a little bit. But English being the language essence of a very pragmatic culture, this may not sound so much so. What do you think, everyone?
