Japanese term
対立項
Japanese to English
Social Sciences
Anthropology
また住居構造を説明するための対立項は、観察者側の調査票や図面などの手段から得た情報から自由に選定され、分類基準は多様で恣意的であった。
Talking about the criteria used to examine house structures and then draw wider conclusions about society and people's worldviews.
対立項 feels like "opposite," but I'm sure there's a better term.
Many thanks,
Nick

Selected
(pairs of ) opposing characteristics
I think it's more like pairs of opposing characteristics, such as large vs small, modern vs traditional, etc.
Note from asker:
Yes! That would fit with what I just posted on Steven's response. Natural--synthetic. |

Or is it just an "opposing/conflicting argument/point/item"?

Note from asker:
Thanks for taking up the challenge! To me it feels like an opposite point of comparison (an antithesis?). So if you want to say that Japanese houses are "natural" then the 対立項 would be "synthetic." So the researchers selected these "opposites" freely, which meant that the classification criteria were somehow insufficient. The sentence seems to be introducing a critique of that kind of approach :) |
