L\'epidermide è nettamente separata dal derma dalla membrana basale che costituisce la linea di demarcazione tra i due strati e non è vascolarizzata in quanto la circolazione sanguigna si arresta a livello dello strato papillare del derma.
Essa si divide in cinque strati :
- strato basale (o germinativo)
- strato spinoso (o malpighiano)
- strato granuloso
- strato lucido (presente solo nelle regioni palmo-plantari)
- strato corneo
