The Web 13:51 Feb 24, 2021
If the text is about the uprisings in the Middle East and elsewhere that were organized on and driven by social media, then it's probably more correct to talk about online/Web channels or social media than Internet users, since it's the medium that was key to spreading the unrest, not the users.
So you could have something like "the prevalence of social media in the uprisings of the past century has played a major role in shaping regional politics".
But secolo scorso doesn't make much sense, since all that happened this century, and although the basic infrastructure of the Web was built in the 80s and 90s, it really exploded after 2000. I can't think of any Internet-fuelled unrest before then.
I'm not a fan of the FRA internaute or its ITA cousin either, let alone their English mutants. But beware ghits, the numbers are seldom reliable and not a good indication of frequency. Rather look for reliable references or actual instances of usage. |
