The term appear in a history of coffee, in a chapter devoted to olfactory tests:
"L’organo dell’olfatto è organizzato affinché si possano, appunto, percepire tutte le sfumature odorose derivanti sia per via olfattiva che *retrolfattiva*; infatti quando noi annusiamo una tazzina di caffè cercando di trovare le note che potenzialmente possono scaturire dall’effluvio della nostra bevanda, il naso viene messo in funzione attraverso l’inspirazione."
