Can anyone help with the term "motivi a stampo" found in the description of the distempered walls of a room in an aristocratic home decorated with "delicati motivi a stampo di ispirazione vegetale". I could just translate it literally, but a search in internet suggests that the "a stampo" technique is something specific and recognised, so needs a specific translation, but I've not managed to find the equivalent in English. Thanks in advance for your suggestions and guidance.

Stencilling was widely used in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in place of wallpaper in buildings of this type. In many of the houses in Bad Windsheim several layers of painted distemper decoration can still be seen, showing that rooms were stencilled and re-stencilled regularly.
