German term
Unter dem Brennglas
German to English
Art/Literary
Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
In a figurative sense, but I'm having difficulty getting my head round what is meant here. (To be perfectly honest, I'm having a problem getting my head around this entire sentence)
The article is about Johann Martin von Wagner who was the "art agent" of Crown Prince Ludwig in Rome.
He sent reports to Munich on which German-speaking artists currently in Rome were to be recommended to create commissioned artworks and which were not.
"Auf diese Weise gelang es Wagner, mittelbar steuernd auf den bayerischen Kunstbetrieb einzuwirken. ***Gleichsam unter dem Brennglas werden die Entscheidungs- und Entstehungsprozesse von "atelier-frischer Ware" für den Primärmarkt in ihrer zwar um Fairness bemühten Abwägung, aber auch in all ihrer Subjektivität ud Zufälligkeit nachvollziehbar."

under the/his microscope / magnifying glass
Brennglas is magnifying glass literally translated, but the first suggestion may be a more normal EN expression.
The sentence details other things he investigated; I.e. The other things that came under his magnifying glass.
