French term

rechausser les vignes

French to English Other Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
En Juin, la charrue rouvre le sol et les pieds sont rechaussés. De la fin du printemps à fin juillet, on procède à trois écimages des sarments afin que l’air circule mieux.

This is after the previous paragraph:

En mai, les vignes sont déchaussées au tracteur et les pieds de souches sont nettoyés.

Which I understand is something about the base of the vines being unearthed/uncovered?

Barbara Carrara Sep 28, 2020:
@Tony Hiya! Apologies for not noticing you suggested the very same term included in Giles's dictionary. It does make sense, doesn't it?
Tony M Sep 28, 2020:
@ Barbara I'm very much in support of 'earthing-up' which is a commonly-used gardening term and pretty self-explanatory even to non-gardeners.
Barbara Carrara Sep 28, 2020:
Again from Giles Watson's wine dictionary, where 'rincalzatura' (Italian for rechaussage) is rendered as earthing up: covering vine stem base with soil after harvest to protect it from frost.

To Asker Same site as for the previous question: https://www.bordeaux.com/fr/Notre-savoir-faire/L-Annee-du-Vi... . Look in October, under "Chausser les vignes.
Tony M Sep 27, 2020:
@ Asker We do have a special expression for this in a vegetable garden (is it 'earthing up'?) — but I don't know if the same term is used in wine-growing.
liz askew Sep 27, 2020:
so, it is the opposite of what you think!:)
liz askew Sep 27, 2020:
Buttage (ou remontage)

Le buttage consiste à remonter la terre au pied des ceps, ce qui les protègera des gelées de l’hiver. Il est souvent réalisé en décembre. On appelle cela « chausser la vigne ».
