French term

rizlan

French to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping
Transportation context: I'm translating a checklist of steps to be verified on a semi-trailer for a long-distance transport carrier.

Échelle remontée et bloquée avec rizlan
Garde-corps baissé et bloqué avec rizlan

Seems to refer to some sort of locking mechanism?

I can't find this term anywhere, even when taking into consideration that it might be misspelled in the source... I've reached out to the client but in the meantime... any thoughts?

Discussion

Tony M Dec 20, 2019:
@ BDF No, there really isn't, in this context —through many fields in engineering, building, etc., cable ties are regularly used as a quick means of securing things — which is clearly the usage here.
B D Finch Dec 20, 2019:
Beware of jumping to conclusions Rilsan is a patented name of a particular type of polyamide:

https://www.arkema.com/en/products/product-finder/range-view...
"Rilsan® Polyamide Family
Product range
These biobased resins are well-designed for oil & gas, automotive, sport, textile, and many more applications

High performance polyamides that deliver toughness, flexibility, chemical resistance, and permeation resistance. Many grades are bio-based."

So, even if the term is sometimes used as shorthand for cable ties made of that material, there is room for doubt whether that is what your text means.

French term (edited): rizlan [typo for] rilsan
Selected

cable tie, TyRap

A very common typo for rilsan — which variously gets spelt rizlan or rislan, presumbaly because it also get pronounced wrongly!

'cable tie' is a generic term for these in EN (even if here it isn't actually being used for tying cables!) — though many people use the equivalent proprietary name, which is TyRap®; again, various spellings of that exist, and I'm no longer even sure which is the correct manufacturer's spelling!

Rilsan fastener or clamp

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : It certainly is a typo — but note they are not commonly called by this trade name in EN; and it certainly isn't any kind of 'clamp'
