The context is a survey of professionals concerning e-mail services and new technology within their company.
"L'ensemble des personnes interrogées considère que l'e-mail, les PDA, le micro-ordinateur et le téléphone sont des technologies complémentaires. La plupart des interviewés souhaite une convergence rapide et effective, et non des effets d'annonce."
I know what it means, but I can't find the appropriate way of saying it in British English in this context. I'm thinking of sales pitch, but am not sure that it sounds right to UK ears. Thank you for your help.

Actually, the French would make more sense in English, if it had just said, the respondents didn\'t want to hear more advertising.

The French is slightly technical here but the text means the respondents want:
convergence of the technology and not more advertising...I don\'t think you need to worry about it meaning anything more than that..even though the \'\'technical term\" is advertising effects.

: The sentence is awkward, but it does seem that the author is saying that the interviewees truly want this convergence (as opposed to thinking they want the convergence because advertising or the research testing effects make them imagine that they do).

Gayle, I think it means "the effect of an announcement on the behaviour of those who hear the announcement". I can't think of a succinct English equivalent, but maybe "an empty marketing message" might do in the context. See the web reference for some in-context use.

I wonder...
Gayle, I'm not so sure if it really DOES mean 'sales pitch' as you suggest; my inclination would be more towards the use of one medium merely to 'announce' (flag up etc.) information available on one of the other media, or simply as a message board, rather than for the distribution of actual 'content'
Just a thought, though I'm sure you probably know a lot more about it than I do! :-)

But I think df49f may also have a point --- mfrs sell this or that equipment on the PROMISE that it will permit convergence with the very next product they bring out, and then wait to see if enough suckers bite to make it worth their while bothering to develop it or not --- something we\'ve seeen so often in the past in other sectors, but which is really appalling in this particular field. But then, who\'d have ever thought that cameraphones would have taken off?

I think effet d'annonce is close to tout nouveau tout beau, or short-lived popularity, so fad might work.
