French to English Tech/Engineering Sports / Fitness / Recreation exercise bikes
From the description of an exercise bike:

Dans le cadre d’une rééducation fonctionnelle, choisissez un vélo avec un cadre ouvert et un carter en retrait, qui facilitent l’enjambement.

I know that step-through designs and recumbent frames are recommended for physiotherapy, but I'm having trouble visualising what they mean by "carter en retrait" - (carter is the chainguard of the bike).

Thanks Tony, I'm thinking along the same lines, and I am considering using simply "step-through" or "walk-through design" to cover both concepts (open frame and chainguard position).

Don't know if that might be what they mean by 'en retrait' — i.e. in a front/back sense?

I have seen one type where, instead of the pedals driving a flywheel at the front, the wheel is actually located behind the seat, and so the chain runs backwards, thus leaving the step-through space completely clear.
