Hello,
Does anybody know what 'centrale à vapeur' (some sort of small household appliance) is in English? Could it be referring to a pressure cooker? Can't find the term in any of my dictionaries.

In fact, the steam producing unit is separate from the "iron". This kind of appliance has been in existence in Europe for several years, but is just barely arriving in the US. I saw it at a Home and Garden Show in Fort-Worth TX two or 3 weeks ago. The advantage compared with a tradional steam iron, is that with this steamer, the iron remains cold and still distribute the steam coming from the separate steamer. It greatly reduces the risks of burning the material and yet removes very easily the wrinkles.

This appears, from what I could fnd on the following web sites, to be an appliance for steam-pressing clothing. A steamer is a handheld appliance that produces steam; it is used by running it over clolthing to remove wrinkles.

: I think this is a bit confusing, as it makes it sound like a steam cooking appliance; and 'clothes steamer' makes it sound like one of those hand-held devices you can use to steam wrinkles out of e.g. curtains, but isn't actually an iron.

: Not in this case; it is a very commonly-used household appliance; it is unusual to use this term for a generating plant, as they usually specifiy the original energy source (centrale thermique / nucléaire, etc.)

I think the key idea is that it is basically a steam iron (which would be familiar to most readers!) — with a special added feature, which may or may not needed fuller description, depending on context.
