Discussion

Bashiqa Jun 9, 2009:
Wire is usually drawn, sections are usually extruded. By the way, I hope Dianne is going to share these valuable points out between us all.
B D Finch Jun 9, 2009:
drawing As Euquinimod says, pulling as opposed to extrusion which is pushing. To put it (probably) unscientifically.
Bourth (X) Jun 9, 2009:
Dumb dumb dumb (me) "Filage" is more contextually likely. "Extrusion and drawing". Not sure if one is a "push" operation and the other a "pull" operation, of if it's just that large sections are "extruded" and small sections such as wire are "drawn".
TraductionInk Jun 9, 2009:
Just as Euqinimod and many others have suggested: "extrusion and drawing of metals". Drawing is different from extrusion in that the diameter of a bar or wire is reduced by pulling it through a die. Whereas extrusion involves using a ram to force a material through a die, and can be one of either two forms: forward or backward extrusion.
dholmes (X) (asker) Jun 9, 2009:
it's "filage" - I can't use extrusion as its written "extrusion et filage des metaux" - ideas welcome
Euqinimod (X) Jun 9, 2009:
Definitely "filage"=wiredrawing, also "tréfilage" defined as follows in the GR:"Opération qui consiste à étirer une barre, un fil de métal (è Étirage) en le faisant passer au travers des trous d'une filière* pour lui donner la grosseur requise.", and quite in keeping with "extrusion" meaning - again from the GR": "Fabrication de pièces métalliques par écoulement du métal dans une filière profilée. The following quotation they give is a good illustration of the connection between the two processes.
" Alors que dans le procédé de l'étirage, la matière passe à travers une filière grâce à une traction exercée de l'extérieur, le procédé plus récent de l'extrusion fait appel à une pression qui agit sur la masse métallique : celle-ci n'a d'autre issue qu'une filière par où elle sort en prenant la forme voulue. Des barres, des tubes sont ainsi obtenus ainsi que des pièces profilées dont la gamme peut être infiniment variée.
Gaston Cohen, le Cuivre et le Nickel, p. 60."
mchd Jun 9, 2009:
it has to be "filage"
TraductionInk Jun 9, 2009:
I think it is "filage des métaux" (like wire drawing), which would go hand in hand with "extrusion". Hope this helps!
chris collister Jun 9, 2009:
eureka! Could this be the knockout blow???
B D Finch Jun 9, 2009:
Filage More likely than "fluage"?

Ok - will refer to customer - thanks !
Bourth (X) Jun 9, 2009:
It has to be "fluage" And no, Chris wasn't insulting you (creep).
Bashiqa Jun 9, 2009:
I would query it with your client.

dholmes (X) (asker) Jun 9, 2009:
it's written "fiage" in the doc
chris collister Jun 9, 2009:
fluage Are you sure it's not "fluage" (creep)?
