français term

étirage aux bancs

français vers anglais Technique / Génie Ingénierie (général) tubes, bars and other products, ferrous and non-ferrous
In an otherwise legal document appears this description of one of the companies involved:

La Société a pour activité «la fabrication et le négoce de tubes, barres en tout genre et d’étirage aux bancs, de tous produits et accessoires ferreux ou non ferreux destinés au bâtiment ou à l’industrie».

I understand that a 'banc d'étirage' is a 'drawing bench', used for the stretching out of steel (for example) in order to make it into - among other things - tubes. However, I wonder if my translation effort below, using the term 'drawing' adequately reflects the meaning, or whether it could be better expressed somehow.

Here is my effort so far:

The Company's activity is "manufacturing and trading in tubes and bars of all kinds and the drawing, on benches, of all ferrous and non-ferrous products and accessories intended for use in construction or industry".

I would be most grateful for any (helpful) comments or suggestions on this.

Discussion

narasimha (X) Jan 29, 2011:
Drawing bench is apt.The process of pulling flat products, rod, wire, tube, shapes, etc., through a die. This effects a reduction in size or change in shape of the cross-section and hardens the metal.
French2English (asker) Jan 26, 2011:
sounds good... ... to me - far better than my rather stilted effort... thanks!

bench drawing

I am not an engineer -- my knowledge of engineering is from reading up about it while translating engineering texts for 18 years. But I am sure "forming" includes too many other methods of shaping metal. I would put: "the bench drawing of all ferrous and non-ferrous ..." See Wikipedia > "Drawing (manufacturing)". The bench is a "draw bench" or "drawing bench" (synonyms).

precision drawing

The following definition does not sit well with your "construction industry" context, but if it is applicable then you may be looking at "precision drawing":

ULTRA-PRECISION DRAWING – Roundness with an internal diameter of 0.36 ± 0.01 mm
Production name Ultra-precision drawing – Roundness with an internal diameter of 0.36 ± 0.01 mm
Description The point of this product is that roundness with an internal diameter of 0.36 ± 0.01 mm is required while ensuring a product height of 0.43 mm, or at least 4.0 mm, from phosphor bronze with 0.08 mm thickness.
For instance, this roundness requirement means that there is a very small distance of 0.1 mm or less between the blanked part and the drawn part, which is greatly affected by the material rolling direction, the residual stress at the time of drawing, and the blanking process. Because of these tight conditions for blanking, we made a full use of our technologies in the blanking process.

Otherwise I suppose it's just "drawing". No real need for au banc which may be there simply to distinguish it from other kinds of étirage such as pre-athletics limbering up, though that could also be done on a park bench, I guess ...
