French term

cellule d'interruption

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng
"interface device" to handle power dropouts. This term occurs many times.

NB I have slightly messed with the text for sake of confidentiality.

switching cell

As with your previous instance of 'cellule', it seems at first sight a slightly odd word to use; but as this is patentese (it is, isn't it? It would be helpful to state that in your question!), there's probably a very good reason for it.

As discussed before, one might say 'unit', but I suspect that is too grandiose a term for what is probably only a section of the circuit; we seem here to be discussing the circuit in broad, outline terms, like a block diagram — in fact, you might consider using the term '(circuit) block' to translate 'cellule' here; I don't think there's any likelihood of ambiguity with any kind of physical 'block'. Equally, you might refer to it simply as a 'circuit' — i.e. a small sub-section of the overall 'circuit' that performs some distinct function. But that may be too general to be advisable in a patent context.

I am pretty sure from what is being described that 'd'interruption' here has the meaning as in 'interrupteur' = a switch.

again, many thanks

interrupting unit (cell, device)

I would translate as literal as possible. As 'cell' has a narrower meaning than 'unit' acc. MHO, I would choose the more general term.
'cellule' has sometimes a very special denotation, see http://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/electronics_elec...

Other specific terms for 'cellule' standardized by IEC:

prototype L-section filter
demi-cellule en L à K constant, f

photovoltaic cell
cellule photovoltaïque

cell (in a semiconductor)
cellule (dans un semiconducteur), f

and less specific:

maintenance entity

Another difference: A 'switch' can switch on and off. Interupting means always switching off

Example: A fuse interrupts the circuit, but cannot reenergize the circuit, contrary to a switch or thermostat (control).

As shown in Fig. 4, a power protection apparatus 1 has: a switch unit 4 including a MOS-FET 41 connected in series in a power supply line extending from a power source 2 of DC 14V constructed by an in-vehicle battery to a DC regulator 3; a first short-circuit detector 5 having a CPU for making the switch unit 4 conductive for predetermined time, interrupting the switch unit 4 and, after that, detecting a short circuit based on an output voltage value of the DC regulator 3; a resetting unit 6 for resetting the operation of the CPU when an output voltage of the power source 2 drops to a predetermined voltage; a second short-circuit detector 7 for detecting a short circuit based on a value of current flowing in the switch unit 4 when the switch unit 4 is conductive; and a switch interrupting unit 8, when a short circuit is detected by the second short-circuit detector 7, for forcedly interrupting the switch unit 4 regardless of a state of the switch unit 4 controlled by the first short-circuit detector 5.

A DC-DC converter includes: a high-side MOSFET as a main switching element which is driven by using a bootstrap capacitor; a low-side MOSFET as a synchronous rectifier, wherein a series circuit of the high-side MOSFET and the low-side MOSFET is connected to a DC power supply; and a coil and a smoothing capacitor, which are serially connected between the drain and the source of the low-side MOSFET; an overvoltage protection unit, which clamps an overvoltage; an overcurrent interrupting unit, which interrupts an overcurrent that flows when the overvoltage protection unit clamps the overvoltage;

neutral Tony M : Yr 3rd 'other' ref. includes my alternative suggestion of 'circuit'; and in FR an 'interrupteur' switches on and off; let's not forget the source language here! However, 'interrupting' has too specific a meaning in EN.

All entries from eletropedia above 'and less specific' are examples for too specific meanings. Only "entity' (or 'unit') can be used for all things. I suggest that 'cellule d’interruption' mounted across the windings can interrupt only once.
